to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

all of the things listed on here bring joy to the person purchasing them… I have some and not others.

I understand why new cars, Botox, long nails and everything else in here brings people happiness.. long may everyone be different and buy all types of shite.. it means funny threads like these exist which makes me laugh so it’s a win for me 😂

Goldencats · 09/07/2025 09:32

Buying a brand new car
Expensive cars in general
Tattoos
Spending significant amounts on fast fashion
Personalised number plates

Wine. Or alcohol.

but I do have a personalised number plate. However you probably wouldn’t realise until I pointed it out.

I'd need to be extremely drunk to buy a personalised number plate.

I don't understand why anyone buys a dog or cat when there are so many waiting to be rehomed.

I think the rehoming process puts a lot of people off. You have to lead the life of a saint before they'll give you one.

PersephoneParlormaid · 09/07/2025 09:50

I was gifted a personalised registration plate and as I get older it’s much easier to remember, rather than having to learn a new one every time, or get your phone out with a picture of it.

Klarna isn't a bad thing. I use it depending on the value even although I could pay for it outright. I consider it to be efficient use of my money. Ditto I pay my I phone purchase each month. Why would I pay 1100 pound up front when I don't need to? Only with interest free though!

How is it more efficient? You're spending the same amount of money but risking insane interest rates if something happens and you miss a payment.

If you can afford to pay for it outright what's the benefit of spreading the cost?

namechangeGOT · 09/07/2025 09:58

scented candles
trips to the theatre
personalised number plates
in many cases (not all) university education.

Because you keep your savings intact for bigger items like renovations etc or emergencies. Its how you manage your money that counts. I dont use credit cards/klarna for clothes or everyday items but use for white goods, mobiles etc things that are a few hundred pounds.

If you manage it properly it works. I dont agree with using credit of you genuinely can't afford to manage them properly.

I never miss a payment.
I'm on a fixed budget each month so to buy a 1100 phone one month would push it a little. Why would I when I can pay 50 each month? I have a large amount of savings which are attracting some interest. Why would I use savings ?

Weedoormatnomore · 09/07/2025 10:04

Over priced items just because an influencer recommend it. Especially when the quality is terrible.

Everything

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 09/07/2025 10:08

I'm very much of the 'live and let live' persuasion - if someone can afford something and it brings them pleasure, then why not? Just because I can't see the point in handbags, make up, takeaways, fake nails, twiggy shit and posh cars doesn't mean that they are bad, per se. Just that they aren't my thing.

I do, however, live in a house that is 90% cushion and have a weakness for fresh flowers. People who live in glass houses, and all that...

If you can't afford to pay for it outright you can't afford it. I don't see the point in spreading the cost if you don't need to, and if you do need to then you can't afford it.

Also why do you need a £1100 phone so much that you'd use a shady company that drags idiots into debt to get it instead of just... Buying it?

kolpa · 09/07/2025 10:16

People who have to buy an entire new wardrobe for their holiday. The locals and other holiday makers are not going to think 'that t-shirt is 7 years old'

Tattoos
Fags- I get addiction but have no idea what possesses people to start in the first place 🤢
Drugs
Lip Fillers
Ridiculous Eyebrows

Most people are young and stupid when they start smoking. It seems cool, forbidden, dangerous and if tour friends and older people are smoking then you want to be in the crowd. Then it's boredom and habbit that means you continue. By then youre properly addicted and wishing you could stop.

You're like me. I dont miss payments either and have savings if I need to pay it off if I lost my job etc. Only borrow what you can afford to pay back is the rule.

I think people borrow well above their means, dont think about purchases paying back before buying. This is where the problem arrises.

Thomasina79 · 09/07/2025 11:02

Buying bottled water when the water in UK taps is perfectly safe. I also hate the amount of toxic plastic they are adding to the environment.

IDontHateRainbows · 09/07/2025 11:03

I love Klarna as I can buy something try it and return it within the 30 day period without having to shell out. So I mainly use it to 'try before I buy' than as a way to manage finances as such. I guess I return a lot of things. Also if you put the tracking in to the app you can prove it was returned which is useful if it gets disputed.

You're not getting it are you?
This isn't a shady company - it's Apple and Barclaycard. It's 0% interest.
I CAN afford to pay for it outright but it doesn't make sense to do so. It's about keeping an equitable spend each month while I also add to my savings as well. To me why would I give a company 1100 of my money when it could be sitting in an account earning interest 🤷‍♀️

Says someone who obviously lives in an area of the UK where their tap water doesn't taste like absolute shite

See, I’d totally go all year with no luxury’s quite happily, knowing I am looking forward to a fabulous 6 weeks in Florida each summer.
I work and plough all my money into holiday savings to be able to say ‘Adios’ mid July and ‘I’ll see you in September!’. I pretty much live for that and don’t care about weekends away, meals out, nice clothes or whatever throughout the year.

Totally get why people would think I’m insane too though.

I can understand wanting 6 weeks in the sun, but not in Florida…

Lilyhatesjaz · 09/07/2025 12:03

I don't spend on makeup, nails or more than a basic hair cut and I can't understand the desire for fancy transportation boxes, my basic second hand family car happily gets me where I need to be. I am also not interested in shows, or cinema and am happy with uk holidays.
I think I may be a bit boring.
I spend on plants for my garden, nice quality but not designer clothes, nice days out such as to the coast and books
No judgement on other people though, we all like different things.

catmum44 · 09/07/2025 12:54

Pokémon cards. Or other weird collectibles.
Designer handbags & shoes. Don't see the point.
Problem gambling. No objection to the odd lottery ticket etc.
Overpriced 'art' that looks like rubbish to me, like Damien Hurst dot paintings produced en-masse selling for £000's. Frame a Dulux paint chart - better value :)
People being against new cars I don't get. If nobody bought new ones there wouldn't be any used ones and manufacturing would die. I replace mine every 2/3 years.
