to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Theme parks. I just do not get the appeal and they are soooo expensive, especially if you have a few kids in tow.

Although right now I'm inwardly cringing at how judged I feel on this thread being a person with a private plate, expensive handbags and a penchant for a bit of Botox and fillers!! 😂 having said that it's very subtle - no one has EVER noticed it (or mentioned it to me at least!). I'm just not coping very well with aging and it simply makes me feel better about myself. I willingly admit that Im a very shallow person and get a huge amount of joy from nice things!! 🙊😂

while I don’t like any of those things: it gives you joy. So enjoy!

nomoremsniceperson · 09/07/2025 05:18

I don't get people who constantly upgrade their phone to a newer model. Just why?

You have a private plane but find theme parks expensive? Is this your private plane?

My in-laws spend so much money on home decor, always changing throws, cushions, ornaments, every occasion they buy tonnes of decorative items ie Easter/halloween - no little kids or grandchildren at home. The list is endless. Thousands & Thousands.

I just don’t understand!

You could be talking about my mum here haha. I think its cute though. She always has the most Christmassy house on the street, the same at Halloween. Her youngest is 28. 😂

Kimwestonhelpless · 09/07/2025 05:44

XL bully dogs , ugly and dangerous.

Marmalade71 · 09/07/2025 05:54

Most of these come down to personal taste - designer handbags, fillers, massive brows - all total anathema to me but I'm determined to stay away from the "know your place" vibe that comes through on this and similar threads.

But I'll happily judge buyers of expensive pedigree pets when there are so many animals that need homes.

I can ‘get’ most things, but things that aren’t appealing to me personally are fancy cars, and I suppose holidays abroad every year IF it means you will struggle to get the house/ life at home you want.

See, I’d totally go all year with no luxury’s quite happily, knowing I am looking forward to a fabulous 6 weeks in Florida each summer.
I work and plough all my money into holiday savings to be able to say ‘Adios’ mid July and ‘I’ll see you in September!’. I pretty much live for that and don’t care about weekends away, meals out, nice clothes or whatever throughout the year.

Totally get why people would think I’m insane too though.

Othersideofworld · 09/07/2025 06:02

Exercise tights that make your bum look bigger. Lift and separate the cheeks, why???!!!!!

I thought that chewing (sugar free) gum reduces the risk of cavities because it gets saliva and enzymes flowing which help protect your teeth and wash away stuck food particles. I’m thoroughly prepared to be told that this is a lie sold to me by Big Gum, though.

Big Gum line made me laugh more than it should

Holidays. There was a thread recently and some of the numbers were insane! Like £15000 a year. To sit in a tin can in the sky, pollute the world, so you can lie on a beach and have a different view for a few days! It shocked me how much people were prepared to spend on such short lived trips that had no positive impact on the world really apart from just for them.
Wine/alcohol is another one. Literally an addictive poison! I’ll get flamed but when you really think about these two things they are everything that’s wrong with modern life and capitalism..

localnotail · 09/07/2025 06:41

I'm really confused by some of these. You dont understand why people pay for haircuts, spare rooms and takeaways?... a lot of it seem to be just a criticism of a certain lifestyle/ look ("fags, eyebrows, lip fillers designer clothes, expensive trailers")

Have you ever been on a type of holiday these people talk about?

Fags and alcohol - I would add chocolate to this, addictive crap.

speakout · 09/07/2025 06:45

What's not to understand about others though?

We all have different tastes and likes, different ways of living.

It is easy to understand why some people like the things I don't.

For me it's stuff in general. It know that some of us enjoy fancy clothes, or shoes, I have an older small car and a very old phone -which won't get replaced until it stops working.
I think everyone is under a lot of pressure to buy things in general, but we have a climate crisis, and vast tracts of land in China and other places in the world, rivers are in a mess due to mining for rare materials for the electronics industry.
Our seas and bodies are full of micoplastics, we are shitting on our own doorstep.

I keep fit- I exercise every day, eat well, sleep lots and try to live a soft simple life, take care of my physical and emotional health. I only buy clothes when I need them, and they come mostly from a local charity shop- I feel good about my body and like to wear soft comfortable clothing. I have no need to impress others.
My pleasures are simple, being with my loved ones, spending time in nature, doing soul nurturing activities.

Nikki75 · 09/07/2025 06:54

Designer clothes .

Nikki75 · 09/07/2025 06:56

Washingupdone · 08/07/2025 18:24

DGD wanted to eat in one a few years ago, we didn’t in the end because their chips were cooked in nut oil. She has an allergy

Its not that the food is bad. Its fine. There's nothing wrong with it. But the prices for what it actually is are kind of....obscene? If I got a bread roll at home and put some vegetables and a slice of processed cheese on it, what would that actually cost? Yes of course when you buy food out, you're paying for more than ingredients, but the margins almost seem like they're running a joke to see how far they can mark up before people stop buying.

LaudCodec · 09/07/2025 07:12

I saw above that someone said priority boarding and I could not agree more - completely pointless.

kolpa · 09/07/2025 07:50

I know people who buy new Christmas decorations- for tree, other bits, such as things to put around fireplace and outside. Why? One of them buys £5 baubles. Probably about £400 in total for the new decs

My decorations are 17 years old as bought new when moved into my home.

Oldtigernidster · 09/07/2025 08:16

Holidays. It just seems such a waste of money.

Bananarama2000 · 09/07/2025 08:21

JudgeBread · 07/07/2025 16:07

Anything they can't actually afford! If klarna is involved just live without it.

This.

Theres lots of things I might not want specifically myself but can see why others might but I just don’t get getting anything you could just wait for or buy cheaper.

onehorserace · 09/07/2025 08:28

Klarna isn't a bad thing. I use it depending on the value even although I could pay for it outright. I consider it to be efficient use of my money. Ditto I pay my I phone purchase each month. Why would I pay 1100 pound up front when I don't need to? Only with interest free though!

onehorserace · 09/07/2025 08:33

Takeaways - yes . We get these pizza vans blah blah as live in a village. I don't get it paying an obscene amount for a pizza from them.

RavenhairedRachel · 09/07/2025 08:33

Hideous big lips, long pointed fingernails, just eat, paying someone to do something you are quite capable of doing yourself.

Some of my old uni mates teach in the private sector as opposed to state like me.We all did the same degree and course. No a dressed to impress open day wouldn’t allay my bewilderment at parents spending vast sums of money on schools that are in many cases no better than state and staffed by teachers who have attended the same training courses as state teachers.

???? So you should know that class sizes are half the size, that sporting facilities are top notch (I’m not aware of any state school who has ex cricket professionals teaching cricket on the school pitch, ex rugby pros only teaching rugby etc), art and drama facilities are amazing, iPads for every pupil, my gcse daughter has an hour slot twice per week when she can message her work in progress to her teachers after hours (6-9pm) and get feedback and course correction or a face time call to help. The drama shows, the trips abroad (DS going to Japan this year to see AI robotics, and skin the norm). Not to mention the lovely long holidays.
why do you think the state intervenes to make sure more state educated kids get into the best uni’s because previously public schools dominated - they have had to force quotas to allow the state schools to have a chance?
I guess it’s like anything, if you haven’t experienced it you can’t miss or understand it 🤷‍♂️
