to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

We had this issue. We had to wait about a year for a puppy from a rescue centre as they wouldn’t let us hav an older dogs whilst we had kids

Edited

Yeah we would love to rehome but my kids being so young we wouldn't get very far. Im keen to rehome if we were to get another dog.

I also presume when puppies become available they are extremely popular.

Then get those people who buy new cars and they straddle between two bays as so scared that get dents and scratches. If that concerned, don’t get an expensive car then!

People shouldn’t buy expensive cars because other people have no respect for property that doesn’t belong to them?

Perimenopausalmanicmum · 09/07/2025 16:22

Wine. So many people on my Facebook drink wine everynight, I just don’t get it as it all tastes so nasty to me.
Also a face full of make up and styled hair on a hot day, but that is just because I look like a mess when it’s too hot 😂
My pet hate is sunbeds at the moment because my daughter is going on them, I just
dont get the whole being brown thing but them I am Lily white and I burn I never brown so I may just be jealous 😂😂

Agreed.

the poster I replied to said ‘if you are that concerned don’t buy an expensive car’

people wouldn’t be concerned about it happening if people paid a bit more respect towards other peoples property

i think it’s the kids that open the doors next to them as wide as possible and hitting the neighbouring car. As seen it myself.

Plus those drivers who reverse into a spot in supermarket car parks. Then scrape trolley down side of a car (I had that on my previous car) to access the boot.

OK to reverse park if buying a bag of shopping which you don’t need a trolley to push to car.

Jaxhog · 09/07/2025 16:52

What I REALLY don't understand is people justifying what they like to do that someone else doesn't get! Or get all hot and bothered about it.

We're all different - get over it!

Fingernails, eyebrows and botox.

I wouldn't have my eyebrows done (operations to eyes as small child and eye drops, have aversion to anything near my eyes) or botox ( to me needed pain). But don't judge anyone else;

For me nails aren't a waste of my money as I have Crohn's Disease and my nails were breaking. The Crohn's causes me so much pain and has robbed me of so much - a month in hopital earlier this year, lucky to avoid emergency surgery and in hospital again at the moment. I started having my nails done and they really cheered me up on really bad days. My own nails 💅 have grown under the BAIB, so I'll have my own nails done, when they are longer.

Pedigree dogs / cats from breeders

I've 3 Bengals. They are absolutely beautiful, far, far more beautiful than a regular cat, their coats are WOW. Well worth the money just to stare at them all day.

I feel the same about my two bernese mountain dogs. I could look at them, and run my fingers through their fur, all day.

Mine don’t go to private school to get better exam results. They go so that they actually enjoy being at school without the constant classroom disruption, poor behaviour, lack of resources, staff who are pushed to the brink etc that they experienced at state school. It’s been worth every penny for us just to have them happy from 8.30am-4pm Monday to Friday instead of miserable! No one else needs to ‘get it’ though, as it’s nothing to do with them.

Edited

Exactly. My dc have just had such a lovely year at school. Priceless.

I agree with the personalised number plates, they're chavvy too imo.
I would also add:
Designer clothes and shoes, especially those with visible labels.
Round the world cruises
First class air travel unless it's an upgrade
Expensive complicated kitchen taps
Villa hire overseas. I'd rather stay in a decent hotel and be waited on.

If you'd asked me 4 years ago id have been 100% in agreement with all your points.
However, having been waited on hand and foot in all inclusive luxury 5 star hotels around the world... i went to stay in a Villa abroad owned by a family member. Just the 2 of us for 2 weeks. I was skeptical but OH MY GOD... the pure bliss of being able to do whatever you want with no other people around not have a rush for breakfast/lunch/dinner times. No sunbathing with other people. Eating and drinking as much or as little as you like whenever.
Its honestly changed my opinion of what I want on a holiday.
The only problem I now have is that sometimes the price you pay for a decent place can be the same as an all inclusive, so you need to weigh up what the purpose of your holiday is really for. Is it being waited on, or just being away from the world and relaxing.
Although... as I'm typing this I've had a thought that I guess with kids it could be a different experience.

Maybe because they’re both a waste of money ?!

I think there must be over 2000 different champagne labels - how can you possibly decide they are all a waste of money- if they bring joy and taste beautiful then I think that’s pretty much the food of life. You don’t get better. I will continue to pour untold amounts of money into trying as many different kinds of champagne as I can - it’s SO fun.

NaneePolly · 09/07/2025 21:39

People who book a holiday to Disneyworld, costing the price of a car, and they don’t know the first thing about the place.

I can decide they are a waste of money because I don’t like them. I suppose the same as drugs being a waste of money. I’m not that into any of them tbh.

I think you probably missed my answer, but I have spent way more time in Florida than the average person and I still don’t get it.

I do it right by going very occasionally and not staying too long.

who on earth are you to decide that you do it “right” and everyone else doesn’t

Several people suggested I was doing Florida wrong, probably falsely assuming I had just been to Orlando.

When in fact I’ve holidayed, lived and worked all over the right wing cesspit ☺️

She's giving people a chance to rest and recuperate and talk about themselves, and that is very helpful.

Yeah I had tarot once do I believe the cards can tell the future? No
Do I believe that picking a card and that inspiring conversation with someone who was taking n interest in my life and wellbeing at a stressful time helped me? Yes

Ooh just thought of another one which will upset a lot of MNers. Alcohol! Just have a diet cola, cup of tea, or even better, a glass of water

Not diet cola though! Sugar's not great but I'd prefer it to assorted weird chemicals.
