to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Takeaways are the only break I get from seemingly endless meal planning and prepping (usually more than one meal due to a dietary intolerance and an autistic child with restricted eating). So I’m happy to spend money on them. I’d love more Botox as it made me look way less shit but can’t currently get it cos I’m on chemo. I’ve realised recently that most of my spending goes on anything that makes my life easier.

Totally agree. Living with illness & pain means I feel rubbish and a bit of botox or profhilo does wonders! My kids have ASD & one has a restrictive diet so takeaways are frequent.
There are lots of things which arent necessarily my cup of tea 🤷‍♀️
I hope your chemo is helping & that you're not feeling too awful xx

N00dleStrudel · 08/07/2025 22:03

Theme parks. I just do not get the appeal and they are soooo expensive, especially if you have a few kids in tow.

Although right now I'm inwardly cringing at how judged I feel on this thread being a person with a private plate, expensive handbags and a penchant for a bit of Botox and fillers!! 😂 having said that it's very subtle - no one has EVER noticed it (or mentioned it to me at least!). I'm just not coping very well with aging and it simply makes me feel better about myself. I willingly admit that Im a very shallow person and get a huge amount of joy from nice things!! 🙊😂

Tattoos. Every single one makes the wearer look worse than before they had them.

New build houses. They are always poor value vs the alternatives.

Houses in cities. Far better value and quality of life available elsewhere within easy commuting distance if needed.

Cigarettes and vapes.

Black pudding. A bit niche but who decided that was a mainstream foodstuff?

Cod roe. As above.

Black pudding is delicious. It might be niche now but it was obviously 'invented' to help use up every bit of the pig.

Because you want a puppy and want to select a breed you know will fit your family.

And also because a lot of rehoming centres dont allow dogs to be placed in homes with children.

Any kind of “alternative” therapy. I have a neighbour who makes a good living from aromatherapy. I just think “Why?”

She's giving people a chance to rest and recuperate and talk about themselves, and that is very helpful.

lissie123 · 08/07/2025 22:08

Plastic grass/turf.

N00dleStrudel · 08/07/2025 22:16

When I was in my 20s I was house sitting for my parents and poured myself a glass of wine from a bottle in the fridge (the general rule was anything in the fridge was fair game). It was so disgusting I decided it must have 'gone off' and poured the whole lot down the sink.

When my parents returned it transpired it was a £200 bottle of pudding wine gifted to my dad by a client. He never let me forget it, God rest his soul!

lissie123 · 08/07/2025 22:08

Plastic grass/turf.

I don't get that either.
The people I know with it spend time hoovering it, and covering it in disinfectant.

Real grass is so much more low maintenance.

Outsideswimbabe · 08/07/2025 22:22

Huge eyelashes.
Tatoos. They just look like bruises to me.
Coffee in take away cups.
Designer handbags. They look the same as cheap ones to me.
Big fat lips.
Just Eat food 🤮
Vapes and cigarettes.

Plastic grass/turf.

Definitely this. It's hideous.

they will still be in the same postion qualification wise if they had sent them to a state school

I know. But as I said above, they’re enjoying private school. They can learn without constant classroom disruptions, fighting, poor behaviour, lack of resources etc that were an every day occurrence at their state school. It’s worth the money for us for that reason only. No one wants to be miserable for 7 hours a day, 5 days a week.

My parents picked private school, believing it better, I hated the experience and was horribly bullied. My DC are both so happy in their state schools, and this makes me so happy. The oldest is in a large secondary and youngest still at primary. No regrets.

Treeshadebreese · 08/07/2025 22:33

Junk food, alcohol, eating out, holidays abroad, expensive cars, beauty treatments, designer clothes, more than one dog,
I’d love a designer bad though.

HeyThereDelila · 08/07/2025 22:38

Fancy cars, cosmetic surgery eg Botox, gym membership, cars on finance, designer clothes, shoes and bags.

JMSA · 08/07/2025 22:39

Nothing. Honestly. To each their own.

Hallywally · 08/07/2025 22:40

I’ve got pedigree cats. It’s not my fault the shelters are full- that’s the fault of the people who put them there in the first place.

billycat321 · 08/07/2025 23:23

Trout pouts
Tattoos

Teasloth · 08/07/2025 23:40

I can understand personally most things people coukd have an interest in even though there's not a chance in hell I'd spend the same kind of money

The one that I really can't wrap my head around though is 'designer' shoes and bags.

I love a nice pair of boots or trainers and have a massive shoe collection but have never spent over £200 on a pair (they were DMs) and for that I would have to really really love them and be something really special.

I also get spending a few hundred on something like a really nice leather coat or bag but it's when it gets to the £1000s I stop getting it

Half the stuff I see for those prices is really ugly to me anyway, but maybe that's just my taste!!

I'm a bit 90s grunge so designer anything or things that are a 'must have' or 'classic' item isn't really my cup of tea

ScreamingDelight · 08/07/2025 23:48

SquirrelMadness · 07/07/2025 18:14

I don't understand people who don't understand takeaways. It's a lazy meal when you want a treat. Most restaurants do takeaways now so you can get some delicious food. I understand why people would choose not to spend their money on takeaways but not understanding why anyone would want to seems strange.

I've never understood personalised number plates and I feel like asking someone who has one what pleasure they get out of it would be a bit rude. I would love to know why though.

My numberplate spells my name, I have owned it for over 20 years now, can’t explain why but I do cherish it.

We had this issue. We had to wait about a year for a puppy from a rescue centre as they wouldn’t let us hav an older dogs whilst we had kids

I’m glad your kids have a school they are happy with. And a state school too so free.

Our local state school let kids beat my child up day after day after day without meaningful consequences because ‘the bullies are in care so we can’t exclude them’. We moved my child to private and I could cry with gratitude. They’ve stopped self harming. They’ve stopped telling me every day how much they loathe themselves. They’re just happy, The ludicrous fees are money well spent to safeguard my child’s mental and physical wellbeing.

Well pedigrees have so many health problems with big vets bills. I really wanted a Maine Coon but they have heart problems. so I’m happy with my 2 rescue tuxedo cats ☺️

OVienna · 09/07/2025 01:36

Sending the ironing out. You really have that much? What're you ironing?

jazzybelle · 09/07/2025 01:44

Spending a fortune on a cruise and then moaning that they can't afford anything.

thegeeklady · 09/07/2025 02:08

For me it's fingernails and hair extensions. I personally don't understand why anyone has long hair, especially that needs so much attention. I like to just wash and go.

Skates · 09/07/2025 04:34

Lordofmyflies · 07/07/2025 16:00

So much! Lip fillers, those crazy painted eyebrows, gambling, tattoos, caravans, camping, football tickets, I could go on!

What’s wrong with camping???
