to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Expensive trainers
Fancy coffee machines (because I prefer a good quality instant)
Hotel rooms that cost thousands a night (probably only for the very rich who wouldn’t notice or care about the cost anyway).

Tattoos and iphones.

I don’t understand why anyone would buy a BMW. Someone told me recently that BMW drivers are the very worst drivers on the road, and I now clock the brand whenever someone does something that’s a total dick move, and it’s SO TRUE that each and every time it’s a BMW. I couldn’t ever get one. My driving isn’t bad enough.

The hotels one is so true! You read the travel section in the paper and hotels see all from about £300 a night. Our household income is over £250k and what with the mortgage, bills, nursery etc there’s no way we could afford that. So who can? Pensioners possibly? Final salary pension, no mortgage or kids? No average person that’s for sure.

lol it is just a brand. Some people say the same about Audi.

My ex had an Audi. A hand me down from his parents. People would cut him up all the time. One time, some knob kept cutting in front of him on the motorway, and he ended up missing his exit.. had to go on to the next one.

Tattoos, fag's, drugs, lots of drink, big lips. Lots of scratch cards, lots of takeaways.

Firstly, weddings - unbelievable waste of money. They are always boring, stressful, and forgettable (unless someone does something stupid).

Expensive stuff for new-borns - they grow out of everything in a flash! And babies dont care how "posh" their pram is.

Any shoes or bags costing more than couple hundred pounds - like bags that cost 25k??? just why? And they are not even attractive.

Yep - I totally agree with all of these !

I’ve watched some youtubers where they review very expensive hotels and some of the nightly rates are eye watering. There’s one in Vegas that’s $100k a night! 😬

BunnyLake · 08/07/2025 21:16

Alcohol. I just have no interest in it, I think my yearly spend is about a fiver.

Fancy candles

Bluebell06 · 08/07/2025 21:16

Not me, but some people think they can tell the difference between naturally big lips and ones that are not.

But it can be clear when someone with thin lips has had work done.

I think most people can tell can’t they?

Or do you mean can’t tell?

Did the person that told you that provide their source?!

I always find that sweeping statements like this are purely based on anecdotes…and we all have them.

i have a ‘nice’ car, not a BMW though, and I find that the drivers that behave the worse (cutting me up, being awkward with merging etc) always seem to be people in older, more run of the mill models of cars. And it’s nearly always older men. It’s like they think they have something to prove because a young female has a ‘better’ car than them.

enjoyinglifenowretired · 08/07/2025 21:37

Gambling
cigarettes/ vapes/ illegal drugs
things that need dusting ( ornaments, trinkets, fake flowers)
beige takeaway food
clothes covered in logos
fad kitchen appliances like ice cream makers, bread makers, pasta machines
holiday home. I would hate to keep going back to the same place.
video games
tattoos
cars that don’t fit into a standard car park space.

kolpa · 08/07/2025 21:42

Carrier bags - the charge has been in place for almost 10 years in England. Still see many shoppers not having any bags on them.

MaddestGranny · 08/07/2025 21:43

Hugely expensive fancy weddings.

kolpa · 08/07/2025 21:45

People who buy illegal number plates. Tinted, 4D (with coloured bits). Why? Though it shows that they drive like bellends

If you have children, the “average person” you probably interact with is other people who mostly have children, which gives you the impression of a particular lifestyle and expenses. We have a similar household income and are childfree, as are most of our social circles, which informs our view of the “average person.” Think of all the money you spend each year on nursery fees, school uniform, school dinners, shoes, kiddie clothes, toys, extracurricular activities etc. Add it up. That’s what everyone I know has spare to spend on a multitude of other things, including hotels.

They always seem to be the cars that are broken down on the motorway 😏

SerafinasGoose · 08/07/2025 21:55

Doorbells.

I do not answer the front door without a prior appointment.

MyRubyFox · 08/07/2025 22:01

Expensive kettles. My sister just paid £90 for a new one. Seriously? For something that just boils water?
