to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Would you recognise the difference and judge anyway? Genuine question … I have friends of different ethnicities with large lips. All were teased horribly about them as teens and are now asked if they have fillers!

Not me, but some people think they can tell the difference between naturally big lips and ones that are not.

But it can be clear when someone with thin lips has had work done.

A few years ago I felt like I couldn't justify getting a take away coffee at work every morning. My colleague had done all the maths of how much he was saving in a year. I stopped for a few days then realised I got so much pleasure from it - not just the coffee (it was sometimes a bit rubbish), but the people, the ritual, taking a proper break. Couldn't put a price on all that.

One thing that used to amaze me was how much people spent on magazines in one go! I worked in WHSmiths on that section for a while and literally people spent £20 on a few mags like Vogue which is full of ads pages and the mags all rotate with the same free gifts and articles. When you see them day in day out they are all the same. And don’t get me started on celeb mags 🤣

I couldn’t care less what people spend their money on really but it pees me off when it comes before their kids. An old friend of mine would say to her kids oh we can’t afford that main present you want for Xmas but then she’d be spending hundreds on a tattoo! She was always pleading poverty though but always found the cash for hairdressers every 6 was on the dot or getting her nails done. Turns out she was taking money off other friends/family left right and centre and manipulating them to buy her stuff 🙄
If my kids asked for something for Xmas I would not choose a tattoo over seeing their happy faces on Xmas morning.
I don’t get the craze with lip fillers, it looks horrible on some women who got too far or they look totally out of proportion. Each to their own if they can afford it though and kids aren’t going without 👍

On that I can agree. It’s the profile view that’s wrong and when those enhanced lips start eating, they look like they belong to someone else 🤣

Takeaways for sure! If you wonder about public schools my suggestion would be to go to an open day if you’ve never been yourself, or sent your children, to a public school. I doubt you’d wonder after that 😀

Some of my old uni mates teach in the private sector as opposed to state like me.We all did the same degree and course. No a dressed to impress open day wouldn’t allay my bewilderment at parents spending vast sums of money on schools that are in many cases no better than state and staffed by teachers who have attended the same training courses as state teachers.

Justgorgeous · 08/07/2025 19:36

alcohol, private number plates, fake brands, restaurants charging ridiculous amounts for mediocre food, botox and slug eyebrows.

localnotail · 08/07/2025 19:39

Firstly, weddings - unbelievable waste of money. They are always boring, stressful, and forgettable (unless someone does something stupid).

Expensive stuff for new-borns - they grow out of everything in a flash! And babies dont care how "posh" their pram is.

Any shoes or bags costing more than couple hundred pounds - like bags that cost 25k??? just why? And they are not even attractive.

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 08/07/2025 19:43

Expensive designer handbags (£500+). My husband once paid £120 for a handmade bag in Italy. I love that it is special and a one off and that my DH wanted to treat me.

Buying pets. There are so many who need adopting but idiots will pay for one that fits their Instagram aesthetic or lifestyle aspirations.

Having adopted two traumatised children i wasn't risking taking on a traumatised pet too.

CyanMaker · 08/07/2025 19:50

Name brand of everything!!

ResidentPorker · 08/07/2025 19:54

@Arran2024last time I checked having a pet isn't compulsory. Buying a designer one from a breeder definitely isn’t.

Augustone · 08/07/2025 19:58

getting nails done- I would get bored if they looked the same for so long and then when the nail grows, there is that little patch at the nail bed which is bare…

I have got a private plate and it has proved to be an excellent investment , much higher return than any account I could have put the money in. Don’t care what it looks like, just love the return on it!

I bought a two seater Smart car convertible and had heated seats added so I can put on my coat, hat and gloves and have the top down all year if its not raining/snowing. Bright yellow and I love her, brings me so much joy

Fabulous!!!! 💝

I didnt say it was compulsory. But having a big, fluffy, calm dog is good for traumatised children. And I specifically wanted that for them.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 07/07/2025 16:12

I don't understand why anyone buys a dog or cat when there are so many waiting to be rehomed.

Because I’m allergic to most cats and need one of about 4 breeds all of which are unlikely to be found in a cat home

But children benefit from growing up with pets

New/fancy cars. Just doesn't appeal to me at all.

Massive pricey holidays e.g. Disney/Dubai/Maldives, that kind of thing.

Fish & chips.

100% echo your comments except the fish and chips one 😁

Because some state schools have enormous class sizes and struggle with lack of funding. Because some private schools have incredible science labs, art studios, fitness centres, sports grounds and performing arts centres.
and some children can’t cope in massive state schools with massive classes
