to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Takeaways are delicious and easy, so totally get that.

Private school I don't get though.

Takeaways for sure! If you wonder about public schools my suggestion would be to go to an open day if you’ve never been yourself, or sent your children, to a public school. I doubt you’d wonder after that 😀

I live quite simply and don’t judge what anyone spends their money on.
But I recently bought myself a mini convertible and a private plate out of redundancy money.
Many may view that as a waste but it makes me so happy!
and in 12 months there have only been a handful of days when I haven’t had the roof down at all - it’s all about wearing the right clothes 😂😂

I bought a two seater Smart car convertible and had heated seats added so I can put on my coat, hat and gloves and have the top down all year if its not raining/snowing. Bright yellow and I love her, brings me so much joy

"I don't really understand why you would go to a local cafe for coffee rather than make one at home"

Really? I go to cafes mainly when I'm out and about. I'm not going all the way home just for a drink. I do also go to cafes not far from home though because I like to have a change of scene and atmosphere. Yes, it's cheaper to make it yourself, but not as pleasurable.

I get stopping for a coffee if you are out for the day but the daily buying of cheap burnt tasting muck that people buy several times per day at work or on the way rather than make your own I do not understand .
Also the amount of cups/ lids etc heading for landfill

Dogs or cats from breeders when there are so many to be rescued

And while that's sad (and my cats are all rescues) my next dog will be a purebred from a reputable breeder. I want guarantees (or as close as it's possible to get) of no hip dysplasia or other hereditary conditions. I want to know that my dog has been properly trained and socialised and isn't going to be a pita around my cats or chooks.

Absolutely nothing wrong with buying purebreds from reputable breeders, it's the puppy farms and amateur breeders that need to be stopped.

Getting rescue dogs from abroad when there are loads in the UK needing homes

Personalised plates. I live in an area with one of the highest percentages of these. A local oil company has LUB 1,2, 3 etc for all its vehicles 🙄

1DinosaurAnd3Giraffes · 08/07/2025 18:45

Watches. Specifically expensive fancy watches.
I dont personally understand why some people (mostly men i know) are obsessed with expensive fancy watches and pay 100s and 1000s of pounds for them and have several. It just tells the time. I've never been sure what is so fascinating really. Surely a simple cheap one does the same time telling job as something that's £1000? Im clearly missing something 😂

Wine. Or alcohol.

but I do have a personalised number plate. However you probably wouldn’t realise until I pointed it out.

i have one it was cheap and because i am dyslexia, having one helps me remember my
mj number plate . I don’t have a fancy cat (Fiat Panda ) :)

Trishyb10 · 08/07/2025 18:49

Each to their own, i spent a thousand on a personalised number plate, (surname)just as a bit of fun , business had taken off and i could afford it,so why not .

ForPlumReader · 08/07/2025 18:49

Cars, designer anything, jewellery.

JustMeAndTheFish · 08/07/2025 18:53

I LIKE designer handbags and shoes, nice cars, expensive holidays and good art, but have never ever seen the point in personalised number plates.
My mother had one and after she died my father asked me if I’d put it on my car!

ResidentPorker · 08/07/2025 18:58

Buying pets. There are so many who need adopting but idiots will pay for one that fits their Instagram aesthetic or lifestyle aspirations.

fetchacloth · 08/07/2025 18:59

I agree with the personalised number plates, they're chavvy too imo.
I would also add:
Designer clothes and shoes, especially those with visible labels.
Round the world cruises
First class air travel unless it's an upgrade
Expensive complicated kitchen taps
Villa hire overseas. I'd rather stay in a decent hotel and be waited on.

TheodoraCrumpet · 08/07/2025 19:03

Shoes and handbags. Now obviously I own shoes and handbags. But I can't tell the difference between expensive designer ones and stuff you can buy in the town centre. Not saying there's no difference, just that it's not apparent, or of any interest, to me.

Pigeon31 · 08/07/2025 19:05

Branded medication (like ibuprofen) when the own brand version is way cheaper, has the same ingredients and is right there on the shelf.

Kayleighfish · 08/07/2025 19:10

More than £1 on hand-wash.

Yellowstickerstalker · 08/07/2025 19:12

Any fiddling around with the face, Botox etc.
And body for that matter although I appreciate this is more complicated and obviously am not including reconstructive surgery etc as that’s an example of medical advancement being used for good. I don’t judge those who do these things but I just feel really sad about the emphasis on appearance especially when you consider so many people are really struggling with serious conditions. It feels wrong and indulgent and explorative.

Heyhoitsme · 08/07/2025 19:16

Designer handbags, lip fillers, designer shoes.

K0OLA1D · 08/07/2025 19:20

Jdh172 · 08/07/2025 18:29

Tattoos, sunbeds, cigarettes, drugs, lip fillers, botex, fake eyelashes etc

All these things make you look much worse not better!

In your opinion of course.

Cars.

I understand that if you're particularly wealthy and money is no object, you might drop £50k on a car. Drop in the ocean, why not.

But the amount of people I know with £30 or £40k brand new cars is huge. And these are people where I know what they do and more or less what they earn - so certainly not wealthy so I suspect financed. To me, the idea of paying finance or renting these expensive cars for £££ every month is even wilder to me, yet so many people do it.

I don't think I've ever owned a car worth more than £4k 😂 . My current car was bought for £3k cash, 2 years ago - a 2013 Zafira. Runs like a dream and it's in nice condition 🤷‍♀️ I just couldn't bear the thought of 'wasting' more than that on a car, there are so many more interesting things to spend money on!

Agree, I don’t understand paying monthly for a car when if you were to lose your job the car will be the first thing to go 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’d rather loan the money and buy outright for a few grand then it’s mine no matter what happens 😊 maybe they want more reliability but I prefer security 🤣

Massive lips

What if a person’s lips are naturally large and not loaded with filler?

That is not something they are spending money on then.

anon666 · 08/07/2025 19:26

Most luxury goods tbh. I'm very much an "M&S quality" girl myself. Thete are one or two things I can see the point of. A good quality handbag, where the handles and strap don't fall apart. Natural fibres for clothing and bedding.

Everything else, anything fancy, I just don't see the point of spending on. I'd rather have an experience or put it towards buying stuff one of my hobbies.

See also - luxury cars, holidays. For me the happiness of being away from hone with family is usually enough. As long as its sunny, clean, insect free and a notch above slumlord student dwellings, I'm good.

Wadadli · 08/07/2025 19:27

XenoBitch · 08/07/2025 19:24

Would you recognise the difference and judge anyway? Genuine question … I have friends of different ethnicities with large lips. All were teased horribly about them as teens and are now asked if they have fillers!

Waggytail · 08/07/2025 19:29

Takeaway coffee on the way to work. Just buy a reusable insulated cup, make an instant and take it with you.
