to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Car payments . Buy the car you can afford .
Plastic surgery- when your children grow up to look like the ‘before’ version.
The blow up doll/ porn star aesthetic. You look ridiculous!
Turkey teeth

I know an Operating Department Practitioner who has 'ODP' as part of her number plate.

Huge fancy SUV'S when living in a city. Overuse of takeaways. Changing decor a lot. I do have a personalised plate but it cost £25 about 25 years ago and was used in my business to disguise the age of the vehicle, which made business sense.

or it might have been A1OBs

something to prove he probably was a marvellous obstetrician

Cars in general - I can't even drive.

£60k starting price up to £100k+ with options - just don’t get it. I would get so much more joy from sticking the extra £30-70k in an investment account and watching it grow.

But I have never financed a car other than my very first one. I guess if you are financing the difference of a couple hundred per month feels smaller.

To be clear, I'm not talking about a brand new one. And I'd be a cash buyer.

My partner's family can't understand why we put money into our house rather than going on lots of holidays! Specifically people can't understand why we bought solar panels.

Womble100 · 08/07/2025 18:20

Parents having a favourite child. Growing up/ teens spent a fortune on my older brother - electric guitar, tennis racquets, moped, cars. Jack s* spent on my younger brother and I 😳.

Fingernails, eyebrows and botox.

Seconded. Why would you have fingernails that ensure you can't actually do anything like garden or sew on a button?

I am unaware of anyone having their roof cleaned. I've never seen that service advertised either. I'm sure it happens, but how come this evening occurred to you?

It's definitely a 'thing' in my neck of the woods. I even saw an advert for it quite recently on FB.

psuedocream3 · 08/07/2025 18:24

See, I understand most of the things people post, they may or may not be for me, but I do understand why others like them or spend money on them.

What i don't understand is people making bad choices and then complaining about the fallout. People who borrow and spend several thousands then complain they have no spare income because their minimum payment is £hundreds per month. People who complain they cant take the kids on holiday when they smoke/drink/have takeaways/sky/latest phone etc. Buying a pet when you already struggle financially.

Five Guys.

Had it yesterday as was the choice of the people I was with (I wasn't paying). The burgers are like £11. Its a burger. It's a burger.

Also I'm vegetarian and the veggie burger was a sandwich of vegetables. It wasn't a patty. It was vegetables on bread and a piece of that plastic cheese you get at McDonalds. I mean it was ok, I ate it, to be polite.

I need to see the markup on that sandwich. I need an itemized receipt.

DGD wanted to eat in one a few years ago, we didn’t in the end because their chips were cooked in nut oil. She has an allergy

Ugly, nasty bully-type dogs. Why? There are so many nicer dogs to have x

Status probably..its sad

Timeforanotheraliasnow · 08/07/2025 18:27

Dogs or cats from breeders when there are so many to be rescued

Thefsm · 08/07/2025 18:27

Coffee every day when you can make at home, fashion label clothes, handbags and shoes, fresh flowers.

my own habits have recently included nails every fortnight though - after 44 years of biting my nails I suddenly decided I wanted to look like a grown up and I don’t regret the money spent as it is nice to feel like my hands aren’t an embarrassment.

Takeaways are delicious and easy, so totally get that.

Private school I don't get though.

God help your kids if they have problems at a state school!

Amberlynnswashcloth · 08/07/2025 18:27

Empty pergolas with no climbers or fairy lights - just a structure of beams stuck in the garden. Why?

Jdh172 · 08/07/2025 18:29

Tattoos, sunbeds, cigarettes, drugs, lip fillers, botex, fake eyelashes etc

All these things make you look much worse not better!

Yes! I don't get them full stop really. A structure with a roof is useful, just some random beams is odd. Even with fairy lights.

OverVerdant · 08/07/2025 18:30

Bloody huge German cars - Range Rovers, Audis etc that take up too much parking and road space!

My tuppence worth is that I don’t understand people who prioritise holidays and “experiences” over a lovely and secure home.
Isn’t it better to “experience” a safe home which you enjoy being in every single day of your life instead of sending every penny marching to the travel agent for the sake of one or two weeks per year?
See it all the time on here - “ the house is falling down around us and hasn’t seen a lick of paint in 15 years but I need my week in Spain lolz “ 🤯
