to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Yes, but before so many people started whitening their teeth, we didn't think everyone with natural teeth looks like a 'snaggle toothed old fogey'. Slightly teeth are normal!

I missed whoever said pre-prepared veg. That's a really good thing!

Pre-prepared veg can be vital for people who struggle to cut up veg due to disabilities.
It needs to exist for that very reason.

Gwenhwyfar · 08/07/2025 17:36

"I don't really understand why you would go to a local cafe for coffee rather than make one at home"

Really? I go to cafes mainly when I'm out and about. I'm not going all the way home just for a drink. I do also go to cafes not far from home though because I like to have a change of scene and atmosphere. Yes, it's cheaper to make it yourself, but not as pleasurable.

Also good for lazy people like me.

Yep, expensive cars and personalised number plates. Must be really insecure and have feelings of inadequacy.

I do not get the hate for personalised number plates on MN. It is unreal.
A lot of personalised plates look like normal ones, except the letters and numbers mean something. You would have no idea.

I know someone who paid a very moderate amount for ‘initials + birthdate’. A harmless vanity. Another friend who did well in business invested in ‘initials + 1’. He reckons it would sell for several times what he paid for it, and he isn’t usually wrong about that sort of thing!

XenoBitch · 08/07/2025 13:05

Fleece tops with wolves on.

🤣 They are iconic. I remember them 30 years ago when I was a kid and they are still going strong.

JJMama · 08/07/2025 17:56

A new kitchen/lounge/bedroom etc every time there’s a new ‘trend’. In my opinion an absolute waste of money.

I also find it mind-numbingly dull when they start telling me about their new grey living room with grey everything as it’s so ‘in right now’, or whatever the latest trend is. I have to bite my tongue as I think the all grey thing is ugly, and honestly stifle yawns. You like it great - I don’t need to know.

Ultimately tho, I couldn’t give a toss what colour your throw pillows are, or how pale yellow your kitchen is. Materialism at its worst, and total Emperor’s New Clothes in most cases.

Thank you for asking!! I am in the dark too 😂

Ugly, nasty bully-type dogs. Why? There are so many nicer dogs to have x

Cockapoos. Give me a bull breed any day or an actual cross breed from a rescue rather than a £4000 mongrel.

Expensive cars. Number plates. Tattoos (and in general just simply can’t stand them). Big weddings.

I do have though Botox, designer bags, love going to Maldives and my son is in private school.

CheekyLimeHam · 08/07/2025 18:01

I love a bit of Botox and a bit of lip filler too (I’m a no top lip lass), but I don’t get the obsession to keep filling the lips till you look like a sex doll. I cannot understand why anyone would want to look like that.
I don’t have tattoos, not for me but I like them on others and understand why.
my one thing, is facial piercings (nose, lip, eyebrow), mainly nose I hate the most ….. I think they look gross.

RH1234 · 08/07/2025 18:02

Cigarettes
Drugs
Lip Fillers
The weight loss jab (don’t judge, just don’t agree with it)

I think they can also be of joy to people other than the owner: I used to live near the McRae family (famous motor racing family) in the rural Scottish Borders. It was a pleasure and a thrill to be overtaken on a lonely country road by some unassuming hatchback with utter skill and finesse, and then clock from the personalised plate who it was. Likewise, I used to work next to a firm of accountants, one of whom had ‘I 0 TAX’ on their car, it always tickled me.

HAB75 · 08/07/2025 18:03

Overly white teeth that make people look foolish. Any sort of obvious cosmetic surgery, especially the sorts that make people less aesthetically attractive than they were before. I'm totally with the OP on personalised number plates - I simply don't understand them. Starbucks et al. Overly processed foods. Expensive handbags that have the logo everywhere - I'm fine if they are subtle😆 Throwaway furniture from the sheds that costs a fortune, seems to look shabby in months, and then isn't good enough structurally to have recovered. Those VAR glasses that honestly look to me like the absolute death of society.

I actually can't think of anything else at all because I'm a more than a tiny bit acquisitive myself and totally understand the pleasure of collecting.

I had to Google it. It's a character from The Monsters apparently.

They are Satan in dog form. I have never met a friendly one.

Labubus

I’ve seen grown women with these attached to their handbags in the school run. Major ick.

LouH1981 · 08/07/2025 18:05

Botox and fillers. Looks ridiculous.

Soberinthecity · 08/07/2025 18:05

I read that as “what do you spend money on mine is personalised number plates” At first…

Sunbeds, fake anything - Hair teeth lips etc, holidays in places like Dubai, massive flash cars. Anything really that shows that you have “financial status”.
Designer mongrels
Education I get to a point. I don’t agree with it but I know some people will struggle to get their kids through private education because there’s little to no other option.

menopausalfart · 08/07/2025 18:06

Alcohol. Can't bear the stuff.

LouH1981 · 08/07/2025 18:08

Also vapes and cigarettes. Hugely expensive and might kill you or those around you 👍🏻

ScreamingDelight · 08/07/2025 18:09

ItsStillWork · 07/07/2025 16:01

Botox, fillers etc

extravagant holidays like the Maldives etc

having a new car every year

but then again 95% of my food shop is at M&S and many people can’t justify the cost of that

m&s isnt actually that more expensive i dont feel. Their fruit and veg is very good and they often have dine in offers. I have stopped going to aldi as their fresh produce is just abysmal, i do like a nose in the middle aisle for stuff i dont need 🙄 m&s is high quality and it shows, like everywhere you just need to watch the prices

BooneyBeautiful · 08/07/2025 18:10

BastardesEverywhere · 07/07/2025 16:26

Because you want a puppy and want to select a breed you know will fit your family.

And if you have got young children the rescue centres won't rehome a dog with you anyway, so puppies are often the only way to go.
