to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Neither delicious nor easy.

Ridiculously long nails with elaborate patterns. They're nearly always ugly (and always strike me as unhygienic).

I don’t think anyone can say what is a waste of money for other people. It isn’t, for us. And it’s our money.

I didn’t say that. Nor did i tell
you how to spend your money. The post was about what other people spend there money on that you don’t understand. So I stand by what I said. I don’t understand why people would spend (and waste) their money on private schools. You don’t have to agree. I answered the thread question.

I struggle to understand how someone can do all the every day things with really long nails. There are a couple of receptionists at my GP surgery who have proper talons... they struggle to hit the keys on the keyboard when typing.

Pedigree dogs / cats from breeders

Yup.

Other than school fees I wouldn't spend money on anything on that list; and "boutique wine" sounds simultaneously pretentious but unknowlegable about wine.

As a supporter of the SSPCA and Peta I'm afraid I judge people buying expensive, bred to order dogs.

None of the rescues in our are will consider you if you have children. Our options were to buy a dog from a breeder or not own a dog. We chose to pay a substantially higher amount to ensure we were buying from a reputable breeder rather than chance it on social media.

Typo but goodness knows what I meant to write 😂

I admit I do buy chocolate buttons from time to time and don’t think it’s a lot of money so it’s okay. 😂😂

Acrylic polish/having nails done I do spend money on, just as it's the only way I've found of keeping them nice and not being tempted to bite them. They are not stupidly long though and I can still garden (in gloves) and type. After many years of badly bitten nails it gives me great joy to look at my lovely neatly manicured hands.

Edited

Me too. Bit mine for over 50 years

scratchything · 07/07/2025 23:42

Expensive duvets. Once the cover’s on they feel the same as the cheapest Argos ones.

WhatABigYikes · 07/07/2025 23:44

Caviar

Tiny amounts for £££

I've tried nice ones, cheap ones, expensive ones and I don't get it. Clearly my palette isn't refined enough

Long fakey nails....

Tofana · 07/07/2025 23:49

Wooden work tops. Ive had 3 different work surfaces made of wood. All 3 have rotted and buckled around the sink. I have had budget ikea ones, lasted about 9 months. Then some nicer b&q ones. Just over a year. Then the ones I had when I bought my house, the previous owner bought them for 1000s she informed me and again within the year they’d buckled near the sink.
That has been my biggest waste of money. But they do (before my family ruin them by leaving spills etc on them) look beautiful.

OutdoorQueen · 08/07/2025 00:14

🤣🤣🤣

loving these!

I get my brows tinted, manicure & pedicure every month because they look fab!
I have regular Botox
Had my lips done years ago (very natural you’d never know) I had breast implants years ago, again, very natural you’d never know.

Me & DH both have private plates, but like a PP they have increased massively in value.

I don’t get why people spend money to go on holiday & stay in an all inclusive / never leave the hotel. What’s the point in going to another country if you’re not going to explore & see it?
or people who go abroad to the same hotel / resort every year. So many amazing places to see in the world why not try somewhere different?

I don’t get this type of spending either. So wasteful

Oh god, US-style “theme” decor! Your springtime table runner. Your Fall cushions and throws, which are different to your Halloween ones.

Yes I know it is a cultural difference, yes I know most Americans don’t bother, yes it is completely harmless. Still blows my mind that anyone has the storage space or mental energy to do it, unless you are running a hotel.

I know! There was a young woman on Glow Up who had monster talons and I wouldn't have wanted them anywhere near my face.

Oh God that reminds me of when I’ve been to the hairdressers and the girl who washes hair has them. The feeling of them digging into my scalp.. 🤢

Yes you did answer the thread question, but you answered it in direct response to a post I made about why I send my children to private school, which is why I responded as I did.

Strokethefurrywall · 08/07/2025 01:07

The only thing I don’t really understand is changing Christmas tree decorations every year. With a different colour theme.

Only because we have ornaments that we’ve been accumulating since 2010 and mostly consist of horrific shite the kids produced at preschool, interspersed with pretty things and fairy lights. But every year 1 December rolls around and I realise I like my 80s-esque tree covered in Xmas vomit.

The idea of having to come up with a new color theme every year horrifies me, 💯 due to laziness. I just can’t fathom going out every year and replacing all my decorations.

Meanwhile, I'll happily spend a large chunk of my disposable income on holidays, clothes, takeaways and wine.

I agree about staying in a resort, although I think for some people the draw is that they are bloody tired and just want to lay low. They are there for the sun, not to visit another place.

But going to the same place again - it's like a lover, rather than a series of dates.

Shartly · 08/07/2025 01:31

Not a common issue that crops up a lot for me (we don’t go on loads of holidays) but when people feel the need to grab touristy crap to ‘take back for family’ after your holiday. I just got back from a trip, we did it on a very small budget and took back cool stuff we found while visiting our destination (cool rocks etc.) for people we know who may have been interested, but nothing else more.

I used to always buy stuff for family, but honestly people don’t need mementos from a trip they didn’t go on. I saw someone at Keflavík airport the other day loading up on random keyrings and fridge magnets and asking their partner if nan/their sister/mom would like this one better or that one. Thousands of krona for stuff that wasn’t really worth it imo!

I adored every second of my holiday but don’t expect my family to have the same great connnection to Iceland and the kitschy overpriced tat they sell at the airport as you’re about to leave…
