to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Pricey alcohol e.g. wine that you do not drink but put on display or even more mind blowing, in a basement that never sees the light of day.

Augustus40 · 08/07/2025 03:14

If people can afford all these unnecessary goods and services I guess it is up to them. It helps the economy turn after all. A lot of people are a complete slave to capitalism though!

OneBlossomBee · 08/07/2025 04:27

I agree with several views like lip fillers, botox, except botox for medical use, lots of designer clothing, numerous takeaways etc. People who buy seasonal, tacky ornaments to display especially when Autumn hits some seem to go crazy buying cheap tat to put out. Starbucks and Costa coffee are vile drinks really and overpriced sugar filled drinks. Energy drinks too, they are awful and very bad for your health. I disageee about netflix, disney+ etc because not everyone wants to pay for a tv licence and watch the drivel produced by the BBC now. Veg boxes being delivered is a god send for some who are disabled or elderly and can have fresh veg delivered to their home. I can't understand people buying yearly cinema passes either when most films are not worth watching these days.

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 08/07/2025 04:47

They call the personal Regs' 'Vanity plates' in the US OP, so yes those.
Lips, lashes, brows, extensions, deep tans'n'tatts.
A young woman was sporting all of the above as I drove by yesterday.. Oh and puffing furiously on a fag' so it was a hole in one 😬

I agree about staying in a resort, although I think for some people the draw is that they are bloody tired and just want to lay low. They are there for the sun, not to visit another place.

But going to the same place again - it's like a lover, rather than a series of dates.

Cracking answer 🩷 I sort of understand the couple of first days to unwind, but then get out & explore 🤣

they will still be in the same postion qualification wise if they had sent them to a state school

I know. But as I said above, they’re enjoying private school. They can learn without constant classroom disruptions, fighting, poor behaviour, lack of resources etc that were an every day occurrence at their state school. It’s worth the money for us for that reason only. No one wants to be miserable for 7 hours a day, 5 days a week.

I don’t know why you’re quoting me as I was speaking with another poster, it seems like you’re quoting anyone who disagree but I’ll reply. You’re pretty naive to think them things don’t happen in private school. You don’t need to be validated for your choices. And yes I still think it’s a waste of money.

Spa breaks.

I love spa breaks! Two or three days in a beautiful setting, once or twice a year, with a couple of my lovely family members, who I don’t see often. I’m retired, don’t need more ‘things’ so they buy me vouchers.

A decent hair cut every few weeks is also worth spending on, IMO. I don’t colour, I’ve embraced the white. 😁

Expensive handbags
Holidays to Dubai
"Aesthetic" treatments that are very obvious
Personalised numberplates

Equimum · 08/07/2025 06:39

I don't get spending loads of beauty treatments, but our indulgences are private school and holidays, so it's each to their own.

Small man/woman syndrome. The bizarre belief that something must automatically be better because it's larger.

I also think they like looking down on other people from a higher seat. It makes them feel important.

QueenofFox · 07/07/2025 22:07

Private school, cars, really expensive shoes ie gucci loafers. All seem like things you'd regret hard.

I've had my Gucci loafers since 1997.
I do wear sketchers most days though!

Lourdes12 · 08/07/2025 06:57

Perfume, air fresheners, nails, tattoos, heavy make up, branded clothes/handbags, pointless ornaments

Oh apologies, I thought it was a general discussion that all could be involved in, not just a private discussion between you and another poster. If I’d have known it was a private discussion I of course wouldn’t have replied to you, very rude of me!

WhereOnEarthIsMyPlanet · 08/07/2025 06:59

(I also know it happens far less at my children’s’ independent school than the state school they went to previously, what with them being there and all. I have no idea what goes on at other independent schools or other state schools, I’m comparing the two that my children have been/currently go to).

JustMarriedBecca · 08/07/2025 07:03

Nails and drawn on looking eyebrows

Overpriced tea in coffee shops. It's JUST A TEA BAG (at least the coffee is fancy with a pattern on the top)

Botox

I totally see why people spend thousands on holidays because that feeling of getting off a plane and having the sun hit your skin is priceless.

Did a private education teach you sarcasm? I’ll be asking for a refund as you clearly need to do better. What a waste of money.

Coffee from coffee shops.
People that can save £3 on a meal deal and say don't worry.
Not mine but when kids have just past their test and they want an expensive car. What's wrong with paying a few hundred pound for you first one.

Edited

Snort 😂 a car for a few hundred pounds? It’s not the 1980s.

RosesAndHellebores · 08/07/2025 07:11

Our children were privately educated. It was worth every single penny.

Yes...I think you are absolutely bang on the money. They don't look important when they're trying to park though (whilst holding everyone up in their futile attempt to park 🙄)...I must admit, I do have a chuckle to myself when I've whizzed into a space in my mini, been shopping, return to my car, and they're STILL attempting to park. Very infantile I know 😁

Loveclothesbagsandall · 08/07/2025 07:19

Pom Pom London bags! I only have 20 but I know people who have almost 100..

Crayfishforyou · 08/07/2025 07:21

Adults buying labubu dolls

Any item of clothing with a logo on it. You are paying to do their advertising for them. Louis Vuitton is the one I don’t really understand.

Expensive barbecues. My DH has one that digitally displays the temperature and everything. I don’t get it. I like eating alfresco but BBQs are more fuss, mess and hassle than you get back in taste.

malificent7 · 08/07/2025 07:25

I totally get why people go on fancy holidays to the Maldives!

Leasa241 · 08/07/2025 07:27

Vapes, cigarettes, lip filler, Botox, tattoos
