to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

I thought that chewing (sugar free) gum reduces the risk of cavities because it gets saliva and enzymes flowing which help protect your teeth and wash away stuck food particles. I’m thoroughly prepared to be told that this is a lie sold to me by Big Gum, though.

Big Gum 🤣
Thanks for the laugh 😆

There is nothing left in the pot by the end of the month, and if I did I would do an overpayment on my mortgage. It pains me to see how money is wasted on nonsense while the banks are laughing away, fleecing us with the high interest rates.

Covidwoes · 07/07/2025 22:46

Lip fillers. I have never, ever seen them improve anyone’s looks.

NOOoo! I was/am toying with the idea of buying a Defender 110 to replace my constantly-in-the-garage RR Sport.

£60k starting price up to £100k+ with options - just don’t get it. I would get so much more joy from sticking the extra £30-70k in an investment account and watching it grow.

But I have never financed a car other than my very first one. I guess if you are financing the difference of a couple hundred per month feels smaller.

Tiredbut · 07/07/2025 22:50

This thread has made me laugh whilst I sat reading it drinking my boutique wine, scrolling with my freshly manicured nails, cuddled up to my £3k doodle, having just had dominos as I’ve felt tired after having my Botox and filler topped up earlier today (which I drove to in my expensive car with a private number plate!) I’ll be off to bed shortly as I’m up early to drop DC at their private school 🤣

No I’m not joking!

stayathomer · 07/07/2025 22:54

Eating in restaurants, the cost! And home food is nearly always nicer! Same with staying in a hotel unless absolutely necessary, the cost would pay a bill!

Bowies · 07/07/2025 22:56

Cosmetic surgery, fillers and botox for aesthetic reasons (not migraine!), the same for cosmetic dentistry including teeth whitening.

I think most other things mentioned I can understand, even if they are not things I like or would ever spend money on myself - though not read every post.

Some things like pre prepared veg are helpful with some health conditions where a chopping vegetables is not so easy for everyone!

4 x 4 gas guzzling cars.
Why do so many people drive them when they live in towns and cities? I just don't get it ?

Small man/woman syndrome. The bizarre belief that something must automatically be better because it's larger.

JHound · 07/07/2025 23:00

But if you have debt for things you need to live ; appliances, car for work etc theres not any disincentive to pay for Christmas, birthdays or a family holiday.
If your spare income services debt you won’t feel better off having the relatively small amount ( compared to what you’ve bought) in your bank will you?

Nope.
.I'm tired and my head is fried so I can't understand your reply to me!

See, I think teeth whitening is absolutely worth it. It changes how a person looks, de ages them and is worth a couple of hundred quid not to look like a snaggle toothed old fogey

My in-laws spend so much money on home decor, always changing throws, cushions, ornaments, every occasion they buy tonnes of decorative items ie Easter/halloween - no little kids or grandchildren at home. The list is endless. Thousands & Thousands.

I just don’t understand!

I don’t get this type of spending either. So wasteful

LuckyPeonies · 07/07/2025 23:05

Medically unnecessary invasive plastic surgery to look younger. Dangerous, and you are still old.

IVF & rent-a-womb.

You do you - I think the point is what people feel is worth it or not. Some are constrained by affordability, but for others it isn’t income as much as priorities.

£3k dog owner, private school parent, curated wine cellar but domino’s is yuck at any price, can’t fathom spending time on my nails (price independent) and don’t feel an ounce more excitement for a new land rover vs a Skoda. Even at 10x our current income there are some things I wouldn’t spend money on.

Plantymcplantface · 07/07/2025 23:06

Ohhh where do I start:

New cars. Almost all new clothes (except undies). New houses. Flights. All theme parks including Disney. Plastic “collectables”. In fact anything “collectable” including funko pops, jellycats, squishmellows and Pandora, apple watches, constant phone upgrades. Botox, fillers, false nails, false lashes. All magazines and most newspapers. Takeaways. New Designer anything but especially handbags. Bubble tea. Afternoon teas. Christmas “experiences”. Ready meals, way better made at home. Anything sold by Temu or SHEIN or any of the other sites they own: cheap and tatty within minutes. Plastic ballon arches - mind blowing way to burn through money annd plastic. Baby shower nonsense ditto. Anything on instagram. Weekend city breaks on flights that are horrific for the environment. “Seasonal” decor of any kind. Nobody needs this stuff. I could go on….

I can't cook for shit. So 'home food' is not always nicer at all.

Well, they would still look like a snaggle tooth old fogey, but with white teeth.

Costa and Starbucks, just yuck!

Microblading

most expensive child day out like theme park, polar express.

I can explain microblading - or at least some of it. I hugely overplucked my brows as a teen in the 90s/00s and now they're extremely patchy and sparse. I have them microbladed every 18 months by a very talented lady back to their natural shape and colour. I do absolutely nothing with them in between so it saves time and money on upkeep. And they're one thing that always makes me look a bit more put together, with no effort, even if I have no other makeup on. You wouldn't know they're not natural without looking very closely.

fridaynightbeers · 07/07/2025 23:16

Fancy cars.
I’ve driven some expensive cars when DH had them as company cars and I just can’t fathom why people pay 100s a month for them (most people I know who drive them have them on finance) when a much cheaper car will get you from A to B perfectly comfortably.
I don’t drive an old banger, it’s a perfectly comfy car with all mod cons but didn’t cost a fortune.

Mumwithbaggage · 07/07/2025 23:20

I have no issue with anyone spending their own spare money on whatever they like. I do question those who have expensive tattoos, plastic surgery, very expensive cars on credit etc when they can't afford basics.

Other than school fees I wouldn't spend money on anything on that list; and "boutique wine" sounds simultaneously pretentious but unknowlegable about wine.

As a supporter of the SSPCA and Peta I'm afraid I judge people buying expensive, bred to order dogs.

I think it looks awful and doesn’t make them look younger, just like they’ve had their teeth “done”.
