to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Typo but goodness knows what I meant to write 😂

But it is the most fabulous feeling to drive a brand new car off the forecourt of the dealer garage. Makes you feel a million dollars and the 'new car' smell is fab! I've done it a few times

I've done it. It felt fine but within 24 hours i felt like I'd enjoyed a lovely bonfire of fifties. It didn't feel any different to drive round in than the old car had. I really regretted it.

Anyone that follows fashion knows about them

That would explain why I don’t know…I could never be accused of knowing anything about fashion.

Tattoos. Every single one makes the wearer look worse than before they had them.

New build houses. They are always poor value vs the alternatives.

Houses in cities. Far better value and quality of life available elsewhere within easy commuting distance if needed.

Cigarettes and vapes.

Black pudding. A bit niche but who decided that was a mainstream foodstuff?

Cod roe. As above.

Interesting one re cities

As commuting time and expense can seriously damage quality of life, and also the things available in cities like arts and culture and having people around can really help (it does stop me being lonely, as much as I'd love a big house wind a garden!)

Pets and their upkeep. I can't understand it time wise for working families with young children. And the lack of spontaneity in having to plan ahead for every trip anywhere, walk them twice a day whether you want to or not in all weathers, and pay for the vets fees. Etc. Explain please without the mawkish ah but they love you back. I like dogs but in the distance please.

Designer anything. Free advertising for the Chinese manufacturers.

Botox, fillers, lips, brows, nails. I do my own nails and can still bend down to do my toes. That'll do.

Resort/AI sun holidays in high Summer where most of it is spent indoors under the AC unit. And surrounded by people and kids and sometimes animals and mosquitoes and sunbed wars. And the noise of a resort.

Cigarettes. I don't mind vapes so much, but I suppose most of the cigs are smuggled or bought from dodgy Dave down the pub.

I better leave it there. I'm so perfect you see - I wish! I spend my money on stuff that others might not understand either, but I haven't seen it come up yet on the thread, woo hoo!

I have two dogs and don’t grudge the money for them, they’re very entertaining and get me out walking when I wouldn’t normally, so good for my health. I have plenty family around to look after them if needed so don’t cause a hassle if we want to do something without them.

I agree with you about everything else.

Cheap ones are so bad for your lungs!🫁

My husband has a private number plate, part of which is the number of his army regiment. The regiment he served more than 30 years in. It’s more than dear to him. His service is a huge part of his life and he continues to help his fellow veterans now.
I hope this helps you understand why, OP.

Land Rover Defenders
Unreliable money pits

NOOoo! I was/am toying with the idea of buying a Defender 110 to replace my constantly-in-the-garage RR Sport.

Sure I get that some people don’t live near good state school and some people are just convinced private school is better. But I still think it’s a complete waste of money.

I don’t think anyone can say what is a waste of money for other people. It isn’t, for us. And it’s our money.

That’s true of lots of soldiers, it doesn’t mean they put it on their number plate! Fair play if he likes it, but it’s still an odd thing to do to mr.

ExercicenformedeZ · 07/07/2025 22:26

Cosmetic surgery. It is expensive but it makes people look cheap, cheap, cheap and ugly and vulgar.

DH bought one, I dread to think how much he spent on it. Best day of my life when he sold it.
You know what they say, you can go anywhere in a Defender. Getting home, now that’s another matter.

Gambling in general. Not judging or disapproving, I just don't get it. I think I was born without whatever gene is responsible for making gambling seem attractive/fun. My mum is partial to a scratchcard and even they don't interest me in the slightest. Vegas and its casinos seems to be very popular for hen/stag holidays but I think I'd be bored rigid.

Same here. I’m so pleased i don’t have the gambling gene

Bepo77 · 07/07/2025 22:29

How can anyone hate takeaways?! What do you hate?

I love nothing more than finishing a long stressful day at the office with a delicious meal arriving on my doorstep without me lifting a finger.

I was saying this to DH at the weekend - Havaianas!!

Flimsy, boring looking bland flip flops for £30?! My Primark ones cost a quid, look the same and have lasted me 3yrs so far! And when they do break I won't care cos they cost me virtually nothing

Oh I LOVE my havaianas!
Trick is to buy them in winter…much cheaper!

I Agree. Education and the environment a child spends so many hours in is worth paying for. If you find the best Education it’s worth paying for

Really expensive destination holidays. Are they really any more enjoyable than a regular holiday to say Greece?

It’s Wierd isn’t it @WhereOnEarthIsMyPlanet that this is the one thing that so many have critised. The right to an Education of our choosing for our kids. How bizarre. I’d love to know why people aren’t mentioning illegal drugs and why people aren’t defending their right to have designer handbags but no! It’s all about taking away choice in Education.

Huge monthly car payments! I was so delighted to pay mine off then just keep the car!
