to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Yeah but not every state school is like that. Certainly not my kids experience.

Private achool is a waste of money (and yes I have been to both).

For you. Not for us.

£300 EVERY six weeks
another £300 on colour every 12 weeks

It's ridiculous isn't it?

Yeoldlondoncheese · 07/07/2025 21:52

People can spend THEIR money on whatever they want. It’s not for me to understand or not.

What I don’t understand is when people spend money they don’t have.

Nothankyov · 07/07/2025 21:53

Nothing at all!

XenoBitch · 07/07/2025 21:55

Designer clothing for babies/small children. Considering how fast they grow out of it all, I just don't see the point.

SP2024 · 07/07/2025 21:59

Owning big dogs that are stronger than their owners (thinking XL bullies specifically but same applies to other huge breeds).

Likewise owning dogs or cats that have been “designed” to not be able to breathe properly.

Private schools

Cigarettes and vapes - and even worse weed.

Family clubs - £500+ per month to access some slightly less minging soft play and a restaurant? Who has so much money that seems like a good idea?

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 07/07/2025 22:01

It's none of my business but I do goggle a bit a people who change things like sofas or carpets because they are bored with them, not because there's anything wong with them.

Or who throw something out that could be repaired but they can't be bothered and would rather just buy a new one.

The older I'm getting the more I'm embracing make do and mend and thinking I'm really in the wrong era, I would've thrived in the early 1940s!

MermaidMummy06 · 07/07/2025 22:04

People can buy what they like that they can afford, but what I don't get is taking on debt, spending money you don't have, or going without essentials to pay for it.

pinkpony88 · 07/07/2025 22:07

Cigarettes. They stink and kill you and are sooooo expensive! 😳

I live quite simply and don’t judge what anyone spends their money on.
But I recently bought myself a mini convertible and a private plate out of redundancy money.
Many may view that as a waste but it makes me so happy!
and in 12 months there have only been a handful of days when I haven’t had the roof down at all - it’s all about wearing the right clothes 😂😂

I misread this as a mini convertible and a private plane ✈️I was thinking way to go, simple living lady 🥳

QueenofFox · 07/07/2025 22:07

Private school, cars, really expensive shoes ie gucci loafers. All seem like things you'd regret hard.

Clarabell77 · 07/07/2025 22:07

Alpacahacker · 07/07/2025 19:44

Depends! If your toilet is leaking or something then a refurb starts to seem more appealing!

Yes of course, this was more about unnecessary renovations, if things are needing replaced/upgraded then absolutely I’d get it done, but don’t get people doing it just for fun.

Doidontimmm · 07/07/2025 16:07

My in-laws spend so much money on home decor, always changing throws, cushions, ornaments, every occasion they buy tonnes of decorative items ie Easter/halloween - no little kids or grandchildren at home. The list is endless. Thousands & Thousands.

I just don’t understand!

This is boredom pure and simple

WhereOnEarthIsMyPlanet · 07/07/2025 21:49

For you. Not for us.

Sure I get that some people don’t live near good state school and some people are just convinced private school is better. But I still think it’s a complete waste of money.

henlake7 · 07/07/2025 22:13

Expensive, designer clothes. As somebody who likes to sit on grass and eat beetroot they are just not for me!

Also buying anything just because it's the latest model.

Clarabell77 · 07/07/2025 22:14

sugarapplelane · 07/07/2025 20:26

Tattoos, lip fillers, long fake eyelashes. Buttons, caravans, cheap lager, strippers

Buttons?

EthicsOnThePrecipice · 07/07/2025 17:23

🤣 I would never judge, let alone despise, anyone that spends money on anything on that list (personalised number plates and sex workers being the exception).
It’s just things I have never spent money on and it genuinely baffles me why anyone would.

It baffles you that some people spend money on children?

It baffles me that it baffles you 😂

But it is the most fabulous feeling to drive a brand new car off the forecourt of the dealer garage. Makes you feel a million dollars and the 'new car' smell is fab! I've done it a few times!

I don’t get it at all. Unless I literally had money to burn, it would make me feel like a mug - when I can buy the same thing for literally thousands less just because it’s a couple of years old.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 07/07/2025 22:17

Boob jobs

Turkey teeth

Private GPs

But I buy so much for convenience that others don't like a cleaner, pre chopped veg, Ubers etc

To be fair, you only got your car cheaper because someone else took the depreciation hit (and enjoyed the new car smell).

DelphiniumBlue · 07/07/2025 16:11

Stuff with "designer" labels - why would you pay to advertise something? It doesn't even look nice.
Facials
Spa days

I read an interesting interview about this once. It basically said the true “super rich” wear brands we’ve never heard of that don’t advertise themselves with huge logos etc., which is why we don’t know about them.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 07/07/2025 22:17

Tattoos!

IwasDueANameChange · 07/07/2025 22:18

Botox, lip fillers, hair extensions or weaves, teeth whitening (damaged enamel anyone?), eyebrow microblading, nails.

How can you possibly think it’s a waste of money if the local comp is a kip, or you have a child that’s going to sink or get bullied or just not get what they need because individual attention just isn’t possible in a class of 33 kids?

Anyone that follows fashion knows about them
