to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

I feel like when you start saying you don’t get people buying something or why would anyone want to spend their money on x then you inevitably are being a bit critical. The answer is very simple - people spend their discretionary money on things they want, that give them pleasure. What we all choose is different because what we want and enjoy having/experiencing is different.
We spend loads of money going to the theatre. I’m sure plenty of people would not want to do that but I always feel it’s well worth it and if it’s my money being spent then that’s really all that matters. If other people get pleasure from a gorgeous handbag, always having a new/nearly new car, the latest phone, a really great haircut every few weeks, Botox, computer games, far flung holidays or whatever else then honestly I just feel like it’s nice they are able to get whatever it is they want and that they are happy.

Titasaducksarse · 07/07/2025 21:25

The only thing I don't understand is if you're in debt then wasting your money on anything in that case. Otherwise if you've the money then I don't care what you buy.

IPhones and other Apple products.

Tattoos, dogs, cats, takeaways, big cars like Range Rovers, designer clothes for children, baby showers, extravagant hen do's, over the top Prom outfits/makeovers.

I don't ever get takeaways and it just doesn't appeal to me at all. I'd always rather buy nice ingredients and cook them myself, or go out. But I have a private plate! and so do my DCs. I think it's fun and nice to have something personal on your car.
This thread is really interesting to read.... I can't believe how many people think nails are a waste of money. Getting my nails done would be one of the last things to go if I was economising. Do PPs polish their own nails, or just have bare nails ??

I think it’s quite funny that you’re so shocked at the idea of bare nails 😁. Yes my nails are ‘bare’. Or ‘natural’. They’re just nails. I’m not sure why I’d even want them to be a different colour 😂

I haven’t read every single comment on the thread but I stand by what I said. Naturally clever children will be achieving grade 9 regardless if they go to private or state school. However, I think it’s a waste of money if your child is average, all that money to achieve grade 4, pointless. For those sending their kids due to non academic reasons, they will still be in the same postion qualification wise if they had sent them to a state school.

I know. But as I said above, they’re enjoying private school. They can learn without constant classroom disruptions, fighting, poor behaviour, lack of resources etc that were an every day occurrence at their state school. It’s worth the money for us for that reason only. No one wants to be miserable for 7 hours a day, 5 days a week.

MincePiesAndStilton · 07/07/2025 21:32

Horses. And I say that as someone who spends their money on horses. A ruinous hobby 😅

Cars in general! I obviously get why people have cars, but not why they spend £60k on a fairly average one just because it’s brand new and an Audi/BMW etc, when you can get an identical two year old one for half the price, and a cheaper marque for a quarter of that.

Doesn’t bother me that people do, I just wouldn’t myself. I also really really don’t understand anyone whose self-image is tied up in being a Mercedes driver not a Hyundai driver.

Well partly because most people don’t buy them they lease them. The price difference isn’t always huge and they don’t pay to buy the car out at the end so it’s not really the expense that some people think.

TheAmusedQuail · 07/07/2025 21:33

Cars. They're made of swiftly rusting metal and get damaged daily through use and by other people. Not worth investing in.

Plastic surgery. Younger looking outside. Still ageing inside.

Hugely expensive prams. Babies are in them for 5 minutes. Buggies/push chairs I get a little more. They get a lot more use.

Like many others, personalised plates. Just seem pointless to me.

Yeah but not every state school is like that. Certainly not my kids experience.

Private achool is a waste of money (and yes I have been to both).

SpiceDad · 07/07/2025 21:34

People who go into a café to spend about 4 pounds on a takeaway muffin (when their is a shop next door selling 4 for about 1 pounds 50).

mrlistersgelfbride · 07/07/2025 21:36

Haircuts. I’ve cut my own for years.
I actually went to a hairdresser for the first time in 7 years not long ago to see if they did a better job. I preferred when I did it myself.

Tattoos, and football season tickets.

I can get on board with everything else. Love a takeaway and fancy cars.
Quite low maintenance on beauty treatments. but if I had more money it’s spend it on that.

The only thing I don't understand is if you're in debt then wasting your money on anything in that case. Otherwise if you've the money then I don't care what you buy.

But if you have debt for things you need to live ; appliances, car for work etc theres not any disincentive to pay for Christmas, birthdays or a family holiday.
If your spare income services debt you won’t feel better off having the relatively small amount ( compared to what you’ve bought) in your bank will you?

mrlistersgelfbride · 07/07/2025 21:38

Also Ubers everywhere.
My brother spends £4 each way getting to work and back. It’s a mile and a half.
Nothing wrong with his legs.

Whenever there’s a thread about e.g. pit bulls and bullies, with some posters saying “it’s not the breed, it’s how you raise them”, other posters (quite correctly) make the point that these breeds are volatile, even if well-raised, because of how they have been bred and what they’ve been bred for. Different dog breeds exist because they’ve been bred for particular characteristics, whether that’s for guarding, herding, retrieving, personal protection, or companionship. Picking a breed which suits your activity level, lifestyle, and family is far more sensible in many cases than adopting something which might be the “right size”, but is actually a mix of breeds which have traits and characteristics not suitable for what you want it for and isn’t that sensible.

Cats it usually doesn’t matter so much because of their general lack of general impact, but different breeds do have different activity levels, temperaments, and characteristics, and that’s what cat-lovers tend to fall in love with about their breed.

Edited

As I pointed out its if they are working or needed for a specific purpose then I understand.

What I don't understand is peoples spending 1000's on a "pure-bred". Especially a breed like a pug/daschund/basset hound/KC Spaniels etc for whom the breed characteristics actually causes harm to the animal, for just a house pet.

Its clear to see they have a shitty life (especially pugs with the breathing), and cost much more in vet bills. I don't understand what people are getting out having a purposefully sick dog as a pet.

People buying fake designer bags aren't comparing them to £10 primark ones though!

They're buying them instead of £10,000 ones that they (in some cases like Hermes) can't even buy even if they could afford to.

The idea of knockoff "chenel" bags from a marketplace stall for twenty quid is very outdated - most fake designer bags cost a few hundred themselves because they're made to order from specialists who use the best quality leather and cut and sew them from scratch themselves - essentially exactly the same quality (and often completely indistinguishable- most luxury brands no longer offer authentication services because the fakes are too good) and as well made and, long lasting and nice looking as "real" designer for less than a tenth of the price.

Edited

Then I understand it even less.

why would I spend a few hundred pounds to pretend I have something? Wouldn’t it be better to spend that money on a decent, well made bag that doesn’t have a fake logo on it?

granted, I own one designer bag that cost a few k, there absolutely no way in hell I’d spend £100 to pretend I had it.

Priority Boarding.

They're just stuck in a plane seat for longer. The plane takes off at the same time for everyone.
