to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Come on ... tell us what that buys you ?

£20 per head feeds the family easily. No idea how people spend £££s a week.

TheFairPoet · 07/07/2025 20:46

Designer baby clothes. They are literally going to get shat on.

LaughingCat · 07/07/2025 20:46

Clothes and handbags - don’t get me wrong, I buy clothes but I’m a ‘buy eight of the same type of t-shirt and 4 pairs of the same jeans’ kinda person and then I buy exact replacements as needed. My handbag is a small, waterproof camera tech bag with an insane number of pockets. Definitely no judging on my side for people who do go out and shop for clothes/accessories/shoes/bags…I’m a little in awe at people who can put themselves together like that. I just have no understanding or interest in it, and never have.

PCP deals for cars.

Cars are the biggest wealth killer, and it's generally the second biggest expense that most people have after housing (though housing is essential).

PCP deals are even worse. People pay car dealers huge somes of money for the privilege of driving a car that they don't even legally own, and with insane mileage restrictions so that they're barely allowed to drive the thing.

I think when car dealers dreamt up the concept of a PCP deal, they burst out laughing and said "watch how many idiots fall for this one." Then when each PCP customer walks through the doors of the show room, the salesmen are eagerly rubbing their hands together,

4 x 4 gas guzzling cars.
Why do so many people drive them when they live in towns and cities? I just don't get it ?

The only thing I don’t understand people spending money on is fake designer stuff.

i would rather pay £10 for a bag in Primark with no logo that is probably better made, than a knock off for at least double that which will no doubt be worse quality.

People buying fake designer bags aren't comparing them to £10 primark ones though!

They're buying them instead of £10,000 ones that they (in some cases like Hermes) can't even buy even if they could afford to.

The idea of knockoff "chenel" bags from a marketplace stall for twenty quid is very outdated - most fake designer bags cost a few hundred themselves because they're made to order from specialists who use the best quality leather and cut and sew them from scratch themselves - essentially exactly the same quality (and often completely indistinguishable- most luxury brands no longer offer authentication services because the fakes are too good) and as well made and, long lasting and nice looking as "real" designer for less than a tenth of the price.

£20 per week on groceries - not a hope. That wouldn’t even cover my kids snacks for the week!

Cars that they will struggle to afford to oay off, run and insure. I guess for some people the car they drive is an important part of their self image, but that's such an alien attitude to me, I'll just drive something that work and gets me from A to B.

So many ills of life are driven (no pun intended) by people pursuing car ownership as a status symbol, rather than the means of transport they are.

The only thing on hear that I don’t understand is the pedigree dog/cat. I understand if you need a working dog or an assistant dog, or a hypoallergenic animal but if it’s just a pet surely you want it to just be healthy and the size you want.

Edited

Whenever there’s a thread about e.g. pit bulls and bullies, with some posters saying “it’s not the breed, it’s how you raise them”, other posters (quite correctly) make the point that these breeds are volatile, even if well-raised, because of how they have been bred and what they’ve been bred for. Different dog breeds exist because they’ve been bred for particular characteristics, whether that’s for guarding, herding, retrieving, personal protection, or companionship. Picking a breed which suits your activity level, lifestyle, and family is far more sensible in many cases than adopting something which might be the “right size”, but is actually a mix of breeds which have traits and characteristics not suitable for what you want it for and isn’t that sensible.

Cats it usually doesn’t matter so much because of their general lack of general impact, but different breeds do have different activity levels, temperaments, and characteristics, and that’s what cat-lovers tend to fall in love with about their breed.

People who go on holiday regularly, like 3/4 times a year with young children, how!?

Velvian · 07/07/2025 20:58

Cars. It's insane. Nearly everyone near us has hugely expensive cars, whether they're in a 1 bed flat or a 5 bed house. It is madness, you will lose the vast majority of that money, it is upsetting.

SquirrelMadness · 07/07/2025 20:59

So many people saying tattoos! I love my tattoos. It's art that I'm carrying round with me on my body. I love seeing other peoples tattoos too.

I've thought of another one that confuses me - glamping, yurts etc. I would be interested if it was a budget option. But if there's no private flushing toilet it needs to be considerably cheaper than a hotel for me to be interested.

Yes, and I don't think they are very safe either

Tattoos. Especially on legs, I just think they are beyond ugly. And permanent. Just why?!’

LittlleMy · 07/07/2025 21:06

@FeelinTwentySixPointTwo i am that person! 😱

In my early 20s (52 now!), I’d not long bought a brand new car for work and the thought of the number plate ‘aging’ and ‘ruining’ its aesthetic - it was a cute little 206 lol - was too much for me. Back then the plate cost about £250 which I didn’t think was too bad for that privilege. I kept for as long as I had the car about 10 years and it did give me pleasure as it just made it look more unique and personalised so special to me.

I should add that on reflection I’m surprised I was that person as I never was interested in fashion myself, owned no make up and had v few clothing. So I don’t know why I cared so much about my cars looks! 😅

I buy organic meat from the farm shop so even just that for your family of 5 costs far more than £20 a week. I won’t scrimp on high quality, high welfare meat.

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 07/07/2025 21:08

I have acrylic nails (infills circa every four weeks) which many on here look down on, but my car is over a decade old, I bought it outright, and I can’t fathom what some people spend on a vehicle (fine if you’re actually rich, but I’m talking about people on an average salary). As an ex smoker I’m also shocked by the price of cigarettes these days.

Tattoos

I love my tattoos! I only have 4 but they will last forever, unlike lip fillers and other cosmetic procedures that need doing every 3- 6 months

prelovedusername · 07/07/2025 21:17

Any kind of “alternative” therapy. I have a neighbour who makes a good living from aromatherapy. I just think “Why?”

Lookuptotheskies · 07/07/2025 21:22

I don't get when people spend mega-money on designer labels.

Holidays to Dubai also don't appeal.

Fake tan, big lips, Sharpie eyebrows, long hair extensions as a package "look". Must cost a bomb to keep up with that as a combined aesthetic and I just don't get the appeal one bit.
