to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Big, big lips... the ones that come into the room before the person. That style of Crayola drawn on eyebrows and lastly dermal filler cheekbones that look like half cantaloupes.

I work in Arts Events and see a lot of wealthy women (often rich Eastern European ones) sporting this look. It must take a fortune to maintain, and frankly just looks weird. I do think the dangers of tampering with your looks can lead down the slippery slope of dysmorphia. I worked an Awards event back in February and couldn't believe how awful Tulisa now looks in person. She used to look so gorgeous on the X factor and it's hard to believe that she's still in her 30s (all the work makes her look like 50 trying to look 36). Very unfortunate. Don't even get me started on what Katie Price has done to herself.

I really hope this trend of all this cosmetic work dies out and women embrace a more natural look.

Tattoos, lip fillers, long fake eyelashes. Buttons, caravans, cheap lager, strippers

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 07/07/2025 20:27

Fillers. You always look dreadful.

The only thing on hear that I don’t understand is the pedigree dog/cat. I understand if you need a working dog or an assistant dog, or a hypoallergenic animal but if it’s just a pet surely you want it to just be healthy and the size you want.

JLou08 · 07/07/2025 20:27

Having make-up applied for events. I'd maybe understand it if the people paying were really bad at applying it themselves but the people I know that do it look just as good when they do it themselves, sometimes even better depending on the make-up artist.

Booboobagins · 07/07/2025 20:28

I bought a personalised plate. I bought one for my DH and my DS. For me they were cheap and mean we never have to remember other number plates ever, lol!

Brand new xars - 3I see others buy designer t shirts at £500 a go. Same with knickers and socks. Utter madness.

Maybe if you paid list price, but if you haggle and get a deal, you don't really suffer the "off the forecourt" depreciation.

The last new car we got (last year) was £4k off asking price of £18k so we only paid £14k and that was pretty much the same as the we buy any car price!

The time before we got a £20k list price car for £15k.

Obviously, you don't get a choice as you're just buying whatever is in the dealer's pound that they are desperate to shift at quarter end for two reasons, firstly to beef up their registration bonuses (which can be huge) and secondly because they have to start paying interest on the dealership stock loan once they've had it in stock for the requisite period. Neither of the two cars mentioned above where the model nor colour we'd have chosen had we had a free choice, but when you're saving that kind of money, "near enough" is good enough.

My car cost £2k (Volvo) and is on its 6th year. Even with more tax and MOT that’s saved 10k.
Although keep buying new cars so I can buy your secondhand ones!

Not quite the question but if I could afford it I would:
have my eyelashes tinted. I am really fair so it would make them show up. I cant be bothered with mascara.
I would get regular massages.
Get a new work wardrobe as mine is so dated.

(I dont do any of the above due to cost).

No to takeaways even if i was rich as i prefer home cooked.
No to a fancy car as i am a very nervous driver so i like my old car and it doesnt matter if i get the odd tiny scuff on it.
No to botox or lips being injected.

I do pay for private tutoring for my son.
Very important to me to help him and a specific reason he needs it.

Number plates are not necessarily a display of wealth!
they can also be used to disguise the age of the car, so you don’t look like you’re driving a round in a well maintained banger, but something a bit newer.
number plates start at £200 and if you don’t change your car there aren’t any other costs involved.
not every personalised plate has cost hundreds and thousands!!

"they can also be used to disguise the age of the car, so you don’t look like you’re driving a round in a well maintained banger, but something a bit newer"

If this is the case then I hate them even more. Ridiculously superficial.

Pets and their upkeep. I can't understand it time wise for working families with young children. And the lack of spontaneity in having to plan ahead for every trip anywhere, walk them twice a day whether you want to or not in all weathers, and pay for the vets fees. Etc. Explain please without the mawkish ah but they love you back. I like dogs but in the distance please.

Designer anything. Free advertising for the Chinese manufacturers.

Botox, fillers, lips, brows, nails. I do my own nails and can still bend down to do my toes. That'll do.

Resort/AI sun holidays in high Summer where most of it is spent indoors under the AC unit. And surrounded by people and kids and sometimes animals and mosquitoes and sunbed wars. And the noise of a resort.

Cigarettes. I don't mind vapes so much, but I suppose most of the cigs are smuggled or bought from dodgy Dave down the pub.

I better leave it there. I'm so perfect you see - I wish! I spend my money on stuff that others might not understand either, but I haven't seen it come up yet on the thread, woo hoo!

AtIusvue · 07/07/2025 20:41

No idea how people spend so much on grocery shopping. £20pp a week is more than enough.

Whatsitreallylike · 07/07/2025 20:42

Jellycats… it’s just more plastic shit no one needs

QueenOfHiraeth · 07/07/2025 20:43

There's lots of things I don't care for and wouldn't spend my money on but I have and love some things that others, clearly, think the same about. Sometimes a more expensive item can be more economical though, I have a designer brand leather purse that is over 20 years old, used every day and still going strong so, effectively less than £10 a year for something really nice.

Ultimately, as long as people can afford things it's a matter of taste. I don't understand spending on things that are luxuries while asking for support from others for basics.

One thing I really cannot understand anyone wanting to spend money on though is skiing. On a personal level I hate being cold and/or wet, hate having to bundle up in lots of clothes, hate exercise and I genuinely don't understand why anyone would pay good money to be scared while skidding down a big hill

InSpainTheRain · 07/07/2025 20:43

I don't get spending on make-up or designer clothes/handbags. I don't wear make up myself, I don't use anything other than simple/vegan soaps on my skin and I also don't buy anything designer. Absolutely not bashing those that do - those things support huge industries so they must be popular, but I don't get it!

loads of takeaways every week

From reading this thread, it seems that a lot of people on mumsnet aren't aware that food addiction is a real thing, and it's every bit as real as an addiction to cigarettes and alcohol.

Obviously, no one wants to eat the wrong things, and no one wants to be fat. But many people have a food addiction and inevitably eat the wrong things.

£20 per week does not provide adequate nutrition.
