This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Buying designer clothes for children especially babies. My children only have to look at a speck of dirt and they’re filthy, never mind the blowouts.

Pivilepivling · 07/07/2025 19:58

Expensive cars, nails, any kind of facial work, expensive weddings,

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 07/07/2025 20:00

Lips/nails/lashes. It's just not me.

Takeaways. I've never bothered with them really. I can't get them delivered, and by the time I've gone to collect one (and choked at the price) I could have cooked something.

That said, I spend quite a bit on animal care.

Bloodorangey · 07/07/2025 20:00

new cars, “matching sets” for workouts and lounge wear and things, designer baby clothes, trending food and drink like a new coffee bean or the “Dubai chocolate,” cocaine, getting nails done, some interior design things

nomas · 07/07/2025 20:01

Disneyland Florida or any Disney

bigkahunaburger · 07/07/2025 20:04

Fancy coffees (I prefer instant)
Botox/fillers etc
Cars (Im the type that only knows the colour and if its small, medium or large)
Dubai (its soooo far - shit - and there is sun literally a couple of hours away in spain etc).
designer labels
fancy furniture

Bags of ice cubes from supermarkets.

I kind of get if you're in a hurry and your big party is this evening; but we have family who will buy a bag or two to keep ongoing in the freezer.

I know they don't cost a fortune, but if you have a tiny little bit of time, it's not a difficult recipe to follow Grin

Oh, I love a bag of crushed ice in my freezer. Can’t believe the years of trying to balance the ice cube tray without spilling any , what a palaver, to just get a dozen cubes.

Theolittle · 07/07/2025 20:07

I used to feel guilty about my unglam nails but nowadays I think all the shellac etc looks really tacky - much prefer home done clean and tidy nails with some clear gloss

SoppySalad · 07/07/2025 20:08

I don’t understand why people spend money on:

  • fancy cars
  • Music concerts
  • Festivals
  • Meeting actors at comic con type events
  • Botox and filler
  • Pets

But then I spend a lot of money on Monster High, My Little Pony and Disney dolls, so I’m hardly in a position to talk.

Laser hair removal. I know 2 ladies who did it spent nearly 10k then after having children the hair grew right back! They enjoyed being hair free for less then 4 years 😂😭 not worth it at all. Hormonal changes undo everything. Pregnancy and even Menopause.

Shatteredallthetimelately · 07/07/2025 20:09

Childrens birthday parties.

Hen/Stag do's

Weddings.

bigkahunaburger · 07/07/2025 20:09

Shocked by so many saying takeaways. God Id get them every night if I could! They are brilliant.

Haircuts - no point. So easy to do it yourself.

Nails - just annoying and expensive.

Depends! If your toilet is leaking or something then a refurb starts to seem more appealing!

Or learn to do the plumbing 😊. I did along with plastering including lime plastering, tanking, tiling, carpet and all floor laying etc The only thing I wouldn’t risk is electrics. I also don’t like to use or have workmen in the house. So needs must

I spent £1000 on hair removal from one small area and after 10 sessions, it hadn’t made any difference. And I have dark hair.

Wouldn't necessarily have a take away every night but I'd be in line for a personal chef to do the planning/cooking for me.

IDontHateRainbows · 07/07/2025 20:13

Takeaways used to be affordable. I could get a tandoori mixed grill and bag of chicken pakoras for a tenner from the local Indian. Now it's easily double that. More with sides.

NoelFaraday · 07/07/2025 20:14

What’s my partner got to do with a breed of dog?? Bizarre.

Everyone has different taste!

Yerdug · 07/07/2025 18:20

Ooh this is a judgey thread isn't it? Brilliant.

Absolute wankers that spend money on personalised reg plates, particularly those who spend mo ey trying to spell the make/model of their wanker car.

Jealous much??

Mary46 · 07/07/2025 20:17

Yes spent good bit on laser hair wasnt great needs top ups so should have spent that money elsewhere..

BuildbyNumbere · 07/07/2025 20:17

This post is pathetic and been started for people to argue with each other … ridiculous

Heidi2018 · 07/07/2025 20:19

Im going to add home coffee machines to my list. I love coffee and am yet to have a nice coffee from a fancy home coffee machine that people have spent a hundreds on!

ChaliceinWonderland · 07/07/2025 20:20

Hot tubs. My friend spent 8k on hers. I mean, what?

I hate personalised number plates. I think it's such an unnecessary display of wealth. What's the point?
Plastic surgery. I understand why people want to look better, but there is a risk that they might look worse and all that money and pain. Looks soooo painful.

Number plates are not necessarily a display of wealth!
they can also be used to disguise the age of the car, so you don’t look like you’re driving a round in a well maintained banger, but something a bit newer.
number plates start at £200 and if you don’t change your car there aren’t any other costs involved.
not every personalised plate has cost hundreds and thousands!!

boredoflaundry · 07/07/2025 20:21

But yes I agree, horses are a complete waste of money!!
