to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Designer labels. Might as well tattoo "I'm a mug" on your forehead.

My in-laws spend so much money on home decor, always changing throws, cushions, ornaments, every occasion they buy tonnes of decorative items ie Easter/halloween - no little kids or grandchildren at home. The list is endless. Thousands & Thousands.

I just don’t understand!

Do they not even reuse the ones from years before? I mean, I can sort of get people wanting to get stuff like the odd Xmas throw, cushions or whatever, up to them, definitely, but if they’re doing it for every occasion (Easter, Halloween…) and not using the same stuff then yeah, that’s not something I’d get, at all.

aGirlLikeJesamine · 07/07/2025 19:32

ubereats
people including my dd actually order ubereats for a bottle of wine/vodka, from their supermarket

chailatte123 · 07/07/2025 19:32

Oh God...
I'm a fake tan lover, I adore going to the hairdressers/beautician and I have a pedigree dog!
Things I would not spend money on

  • any football season ticket
  • anything to do with golf
  • bottomless brunches
  • Christmas Eve boxes which cost the equivalent of an entire set of Christmas gifts
  • festivals

"You'd have to be really unimaginative" to not realise that this is exactly how the OP expected this thread to go, wouldn't you? 😄

Re. Takeaways I usually only get them if I’m in a hotel travelling for work or a solo trip but I did used to order them to my home a lot. Like multiple times a week! I dread to think how much I spent on them.

In my case it was because I was feeling very stressed, low mood and also deprived of sleep due to a nasty bout of insomnia during the pandemic. I love cooking but I just didn’t have the energy patience or focus to cook or do dishes so even sticking something in the oven seemed too much of a task.

Other reasons were functional/low level depression which sapped my energy to cook, go shopping for food. So as I was an emotional eater it’s not surprising I was drawn to the greasy high fat /high sugar food the many takeaways in south London were offering. It got pretty addictive and was a bit of a pick me up - albeit a temporary one. Or I’d run out of food one day but due to anxiety I’d prefer to order food in rather than go out and buy ingredients.

I know some people who work in jobs where they’re on their feet all day and they can’t be arsed cooking either but don’t find ready meals that tasty so go for takeaways. Or they get home super late and feel they don’t have the time to cook and wash up.

Don’t get me wrong I have always thought it was a waste of my money and it wasn’t good for my health - but again as pp have said, there’s a bit of a lack of imagination going on.
I don’t think it’s really that hard to understand why someone might order takeaways regularly - even if it’s not a great decision.

Shetlands · 07/07/2025 19:37

I have my hair cut & tinted every 6 weeks and my nails done every 3 weeks. I have my lashes tinted, eyebrows tidied and a facial. I also have regular pedicures because I love being pampered and feeling well groomed. It doesn't matter to some people but it does to me.

I don't understand people spending loads of money on clothes they hardly ever wear but keeping them (I don't mean special occasion clothes). Even the late Queen wore her 'working' outfits at least 7 times before passing them on. I don't know what pleasure people have from wardrobes full of expensive clothes they don't wear when they could stick them on Vinted for me to buy!

Anonycat · 07/07/2025 19:40

Very expensive branded handbags. Ludicrous. I assume it’s just to show off.

I am unaware of anyone having their roof cleaned. I've never seen that service advertised either. I'm sure it happens, but how come this evening occurred to you?

I see ads for it all the time on my local Facebook community pages and someone round the corner from me has had it done. It seems to go along with the current trend of offering pressure washing services for patios/driveways etc.

MyHeartyCoralSnail · 07/07/2025 19:40

Expensive handbags and shoes, Lip fillers. Kids designer clothes- actually designer clothes full stop. Just don’t see the point,

FloofyBird · 07/07/2025 19:43

Juicey1992 · 07/07/2025 19:16

I actually had my roof cleaned as did a good friend of mine. I did it because we were having solar panels and they should really go on a clean roof and my friend did it because he'd noticed moss on a couple of his roof tiles and apparently that can lead to issues with the roof.

The guys doing it kept a stack of business cards on hand because they so regularly get stopped and asked about it by people walking by and my friend and I have both been approached by multiple people asking who cleaned our respective roofs.

It's pretty niche but honestly it changed the look of the house.

I can understand both of those reasons.

Clarabell77 · 07/07/2025 18:35

Totally agree on the home renovations. I absolutely hate having anyone doing work in or around the house. It’s not just strangers coming round, although that’s bad enough, even if my husband could do it, the upheaval of it all just annoys me, then there’s always issues and stress involved. Not worth it.

Depends! If your toilet is leaking or something then a refurb starts to seem more appealing!

Catingle · 07/07/2025 19:45

GermaneRomaine · 07/07/2025 18:05

Going to Turkey or Dubai

Dubai absolutely doesn’t appeal to me but why Turkey?

We had the most lovely holiday in Turkey, it was similar to being in Greece. We went to a hamman, ate freshly caught fish, took a boat out sailing for the day. The owner of the house were staying in invited us for dinner in their family home. One of the more blissful and relaxing holidays I have had.

Botox, fillers, tattoo, gambling, smoking. Esp the last since it is a killer, you smell awful and it's so expensive.

Heidi2018 · 07/07/2025 19:49

Seasonal home decor.

Cigarettes / Vapes

Personalised shite at weddings, e.g. a personalised bag of his and her favourite sweets.

I just don’t understand!

My MIL does this. Easter decor. Summer decor. Halloween etc. Always buying loads of new stuff. I think there is several years’ worth of forgotten tat in her loft because she buys new all the time. Cost aside, I don’t know where she gets the energy to change it all every couple of months!

Mine would be pictures/wall art type stuff that has no meaning other than matching the decor.

nomas · 07/07/2025 19:54

Takeaway coffees
Flowers
Museum gift shop things
Souvenirs

SusanChurchouse · 07/07/2025 19:54

Thing is, in order to have a supply of second hand cars and clothes and whatnot, someone has to buy them new at some point. I recently bought a new car for the first time. Being able to specify everything I wanted was worth the extra cost (I’m telling you, the heated steering wheel is a lifesaver on cold winter mornings with arthritic fingers).

Happyher · 07/07/2025 19:54

Any family holiday which someone going is going to hate, eg somewhere hot when someone hates the heat, disney when someone doesn't like theme parks. I suppose if you are rich enough to be able to afford regular holidays then it might be ok but i just can't imagine booking a holiday that either me, dh or the dc would hate.

This completely. Why on earth spend money on something you don't even like!

Adding to the above pets. I cannot compute why anyone would keep an animal, let alone in their home. They cost a lot, curtail your freedom and, if you choose a dog, are forever picking up its shit.

ChampagneLassie · 07/07/2025 19:56

So I probably would have agreed with you on personalised plates until I came to buy a old 2nd hand sports car that happened to have a really cool plate and paying the extra sort of hid that it was quite an old car to the untrained eye. I feel like such a knob that I cared about these things but I did. I’m amazed how many people buy new clothes rather than Vinted/ebay etc
perfume - lots of it, surely one nice one used occasionally is Sufficent?

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 07/07/2025 19:56

I always thought bottomless brunch meant as many eggs/muffins/spinach/beans /hash browns / tomatoes you could eat then I discovered it was Prosecco 🐷 which gives me acid reflux 🤮

But it is the most fabulous feeling to drive a brand new car off the forecourt of the dealer garage. Makes you feel a million dollars and the 'new car' smell is fab! I've done it a few times!

I prefer driving away with that second hand 20k car that still feels brand new and leaves me with 15k extra in my bank account. 😁 I guess perhaps it’s different if you are passionate about cars, but I’m more into money/other stuff. Also I actually dislike that new car furniture shop smell.
