to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Disney anything, caravans, UK holidays, lip filler, big brows, designer handbags, yachts, takeaways.

Topseyt123 · 07/07/2025 19:09

Camping. It's a bag of shit.

People getting ubers everywhere

Explainable in more rural areas and small towns where public transport is crap! But yes in larger cities where there are good public transport options, or where there is a group of you to share the costs.

@Looloolullabelle
Fags- I get addiction but have no idea what possesses people to start in the first place

I think a lot of people start young when they (apparently - I didn't) think they're invincible and addiction won't happen to them.

ElixirOfLife · 07/07/2025 19:11

Turkey teeth. Do people know what has been done to them?

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 07/07/2025 19:14

The only thing I don’t understand people spending money on is fake designer stuff.

i would rather pay £10 for a bag in Primark with no logo that is probably better made, than a knock off for at least double that which will no doubt be worse quality.

Growlybear83 · 07/07/2025 17:10

Ok, well I don’t understand it then.

I think it’s quite simple to understand - but equally perfectly acceptable that someone may choose not to go the hairdresser regularly.

This may not be the same for everyone who goes to hairdressers, but generally speaking if someone likes to look well groomed and have a nice hair cut or specific style (eg. Hair extensions or hair colour) it may be that they’re incapable of achieving that look at home. So they go to hairdressers who can do that - that’s all it is really!

Some people can do their hair at home by themselves and it still looks well groomed or stylish, but not everyone can.

And if you’re not a trained hairdresser you can actually damage your hair trying to do certain styles.

And there will be those who are very skilful with their hair , but still choose to go to a salon - for the fact that not everyone may have the energy or inclination to do it themselves. And that’s perhaps a “luxury” or “treat” they give themselves.

BCBird · 07/07/2025 19:14

Don't get the personalised number plates either.

The obvious one is buying a new car, unless you’re basically rolling in it. Otherwise it’s just burning money.

But it is the most fabulous feeling to drive a brand new car off the forecourt of the dealer garage. Makes you feel a million dollars and the 'new car' smell is fab! I've done it a few times!

MumWifeOther · 07/07/2025 19:15

Vapes

Juicey1992 · 07/07/2025 19:16

I actually had my roof cleaned as did a good friend of mine. I did it because we were having solar panels and they should really go on a clean roof and my friend did it because he'd noticed moss on a couple of his roof tiles and apparently that can lead to issues with the roof.

The guys doing it kept a stack of business cards on hand because they so regularly get stopped and asked about it by people walking by and my friend and I have both been approached by multiple people asking who cleaned our respective roofs.

It's pretty niche but honestly it changed the look of the house.

When did getting nails done become an "absolute must " I don't remember people being so obsessed that they would never have nothing on their nails !

Elsvieta · 07/07/2025 19:19

iPhones.

BoredZelda · 07/07/2025 19:19

Joining an MLM. You’d have to be living under a rock not to know you won’t make money on it and the tiny number who do, make money off of other people getting in to debt.

Happilyobtuse · 07/07/2025 19:20

Lip fillers, botox, weekly nails, personalised number plates, weekly takeaways!

I spend my money on holidays, good quality ingredients( I love to cook), fine dining restaurants.

IDontHateRainbows · 07/07/2025 19:20

Designer clothes costing hundreds of pounds. Like 2k for a dress. Even my wedding dress I only paid £400 and adored it. For a normal item of clothing like a shirt or pair of trousers, don't understand people paying hundreds.

Gel nails came to the UK in 2009.

They offered three weeks wear and no chips. We are the third biggest market in the world.
I work in beauty.

Daffodilsarefading · 07/07/2025 19:22

I think I’d class anything you can’t afford. So if you are moaning that you cannot afford food, then you should not be spending money on things such as branded sportswear, Sky tv, having Botox or getting your nails done etc.
Basically live according to your means.
I would go on expensive holidays if I had the money. I’d also buy new car.

Designer clothes/shoes/handbags.

Yep I agree with you. I think anyone can have the luxury items if they wish and have the ready cash but I know a few that run up huge debts to have the latest shoes / bags/ trainers/ phones .
It's madness.

taxguru · 07/07/2025 19:22

The obvious one is buying a new car, unless you’re basically rolling in it. Otherwise it’s just burning money.

Maybe if you paid list price, but if you haggle and get a deal, you don't really suffer the "off the forecourt" depreciation.

The last new car we got (last year) was £4k off asking price of £18k so we only paid £14k and that was pretty much the same as the we buy any car price!

The time before we got a £20k list price car for £15k.

Obviously, you don't get a choice as you're just buying whatever is in the dealer's pound that they are desperate to shift at quarter end for two reasons, firstly to beef up their registration bonuses (which can be huge) and secondly because they have to start paying interest on the dealership stock loan once they've had it in stock for the requisite period. Neither of the two cars mentioned above where the model nor colour we'd have chosen had we had a free choice, but when you're saving that kind of money, "near enough" is good enough.

Peacepleaselouise · 07/07/2025 19:22

Getting their nails done. I had them done once and I hated the experience and the look afterwards. I can’t imagine paying ££ to get them done regularly.

IDontHateRainbows · 07/07/2025 19:23

Things I personally spend money on that others won't understand... I'm massively into perfume and probably spend a few hundred each month on smelly water! I ses it as a form of art though ( the niche stuff) so I guess it's like someone buying a painting for hundreds or thousands when it's some canvas and paint .

IAmNotASheep · 07/07/2025 19:26

SpryLilacBird · 07/07/2025 18:36

It's not often I disagree with a majority on here. However, this is one of those occasions... I understand it all! Fancy houses, cars, wine, champagne, holidays, spas, designer bags and shoes and anything else I've missed off this list. I totally get it. And if I had the funds I'd be doing all of it! Meanwhile, for those of you that do, please keep buying designer bags so that I can ogle them when I'm out and about and know that at least one person is living vicariously through you!

In the spirit of this thread, the things I don't understand... cold holidays, when you could be somewhere nice and hot! Every time I look at a cold holiday I inevitably end up booking somewhere hot instead!

These are not expensive, but I don't understand marmite and why anyone would buy it or eat it. And I don't understand why anyone would buy a scone and then put jam directly on it when it's obvious the cream should go on the scone first. Madness!

No the jam goes on first 🤣🤣 my dh would shout. I meanwhile have butter and jam on mine. Or Marmite even 😋

sneeziseason · 07/07/2025 19:26

latetothefisting · 07/07/2025 18:40

Exactly

Most of these responses have ignored OPs actual question and just listed some random stuff they personally don't like.

Youd have to be really unimaginative and unempathetic to honestly not understand why other people might like very normal and popular things like wine, takeaways, haircuts and beauty treatments.

Same with things like private school -you might not agree with it or want it for yourself but you'd have to be pretty thick not to understand why other people like the idea of it

Completely agree!
