to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Anything that is bought with credit. If you don’t have the money to buy stuff outright, don’t have it.

TimeForATerf · 07/07/2025 18:46

Anything for the insta’. PCP cars, holidays on credit cards, lip fillers, chavvy labelled clothing, hair extensions, fake tits, Turkey teeth.

What’s my partner got to do with a breed of dog?? Bizarre.

😂😂😂

Botox, lip fillers, hairdressers, manicures, big eyebrows, fast food, private education, big weddings, big stag and hen nights, huge TVs, anything with a logo on it. But I’m sure there are lots of things I spend money on that other people wouldn’t understand.

Hairdresser? That's the one thing that makes a huge difference to how someone looks. Have you never seen the clip from Fleabag about the importance of hair?

Pinepeak2434 · 07/07/2025 18:48

Really expensive designer handbags. It’s not my thing, but if people earn their money and it’s what they want to do then it’s none of my business.

Flitwickflight · 07/07/2025 18:50

Big houses are good to spend money on if it means better school catchment and fewer grim neighbours who play music in their gardens.

WaitingForDoggo2025 · 07/07/2025 18:51

Smoking… just setting fire to your money..
Vaping… stinky pointless shite
Gambling
Classes for very very young children eg: baby ballet, self defence for infants

ssd · 07/07/2025 18:52

I kind of agree with just about every post here

I was saying this to DH at the weekend - Havaianas!!

Flimsy, boring looking bland flip flops for £30?! My Primark ones cost a quid, look the same and have lasted me 3yrs so far! And when they do break I won't care cos they cost me virtually nothing

I'm into cheap things, but I take foot health seriously. I wouldn't trust that those 1 quid flip flops are good for my feet.

Crowpigeon · 07/07/2025 18:54

Expensive sunglasses (but that’s because I lose/break/drop them in the toilet).
alloy wheels (I scrape them on curbs)
basically Im too clumsy for nice things

Each to their own, but what sort of hairstyle do you have that can look good without a cut? I’ve got images of cousin It.

I used to cut my own hair. I try not to now

Big house does not equal good neighbourhood though, especially in big cities, where the trade-off most people face is a small property in a desirable area and a bigger property somewhere less desirable. I would rather live in a small flat in St John’s Wood than a 5-bed house in East Ham, though they might cost the same.

Howmanycatsistoomany · 07/07/2025 18:59

I don't understand the hate for buying pedigree dogs. What's wrong with buying a purebred puppy from a reputable breeder?

I don't understand people who don't understand takeaways. It's a lazy meal when you want a treat. Most restaurants do takeaways now so you can get some delicious food. I understand why people would choose not to spend their money on takeaways but not understanding why anyone would want to seems strange.

I've never understood personalised number plates and I feel like asking someone who has one what pleasure they get out of it would be a bit rude. I would love to know why though.

I don't ever get takeaways and it just doesn't appeal to me at all. I'd always rather buy nice ingredients and cook them myself, or go out. But I have a private plate! and so do my DCs. I think it's fun and nice to have something personal on your car.
This thread is really interesting to read.... I can't believe how many people think nails are a waste of money. Getting my nails done would be one of the last things to go if I was economising. Do PPs polish their own nails, or just have bare nails ??

Just to say also re private plates, you don't tend to lose on them. I wouldn't be bothered if I had to sell it to raise some money, but I know I'd get at least what I paid for it. So it's just something to do with your money rather than have it in the bank, if you have a spare £500-£1k savings.

Epidote · 07/07/2025 19:04

Load of stuff, Most of the stuff if I'm honest. That is the thing, if everyone would like the same as me we will only have a 10% of the stuff that is out there.

EthicsOnThePrecipice · 07/07/2025 16:57

Weddings/dos, designer clothes/shoes/accessories, expensive cars/motorbikes, make-up/jewellery/beauticians/hairdressers/cosmetic surgery, holidays to expensive and/or cringe destinations, cruises, mortgages for unnecessarily big houses, designer furniture, subscriptions to multiple entertainment platforms, pure breed pets, cigarettes/vapes, tattoos, david lloyd type gyms, horses, boats, tv sets over 40’’, CDs/vinyls/DVDs, brand new smartphones/tablets/laptops/gaming consoles, Christmas presents, sex workers, strip clubs, private schools, fancy wines/spirits, house cleaners, children. And yeah, definitely personalised number plates.

I was loving this until you said children.

SaltedPotato · 07/07/2025 19:04

Lip fillers and false eyelashes.
Really expensive knives
Expensive baby clothes that get grown out of after a few wears.

Thedevilhasfinallycaughtupwithhim · 07/07/2025 19:05

Lip filler
Expensive cars
Resort holidays

Edited

I do judge private plate owners negatively I’m afraid. We bought a car once that was sold with a private plate and had to drive around in it until the DVLA replaced it with a normal one. It was so embarrassing that people would think I was that sort of person.

taxguru · 07/07/2025 19:08

Tattoos
Botox & fillers
Eyebrows and nails
Expensive takeaway coffees and cake
"Disposable" cheap clothes
Gift bags
Leased cars

Fake tan, even the good ones are obvious. The hands and feet are always a giveaway. Natural skin will always look better.

@ChopsySue

in your opinion. Lots of people would say it looks better.
