to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

I can ‘get’ most things, but things that aren’t appealing to me personally are fancy cars, and I suppose holidays abroad every year IF it means you will struggle to get the house/ life at home you want.

In complete contrast to this, I couldn’t care less about a house! I’ve lived in apartments most of my adult life on account of being minimalistic and always valuing area over property size, and currently own a 2-bed apartment with no desire to upsize. I do however spend a fortune on holidays and experiences. Travelling for 7-8 weeks of the year (generous annual leave on top of public holidays) and making the most of weekends, usually going away for the weekend a few times a year.

There isn’t really anything I don’t ‘get’, besides gambling. It’s all about personal preference.

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 07/07/2025 18:30

I keep spending my money (and on repayments) to master's and doctorate student loans and nobody can understand why I wanted to take these quals in the first place. 😁

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 07/07/2025 18:32

Cosmetic procedures/surgery
Expensive haircuts or colours
Expensive make-up
Designer clothes/bags/shoes

Sparrow11 · 07/07/2025 18:33

Expensive whisky that they're never going to open

Pedigree dogs / cats from breeders

Definitely!

we have a ‘pedigree’ cat from a rescue. Would have cost us about £2k had we bought her from a breeder. Only difference is she was spayed so we couldn’t breed from her, which we wouldn’t have done anyway.

Unnecessary home renovations. Costs a bomb where I live.
I know someone who’s never content with what they have in their (pretty perfect) home and is always looking to spend more.
Then again, they haven’t been on a foreign holiday for 15 years! I’d not trade the memories I have from amazing family holidays which didn’t cost the earth to borrow more money for an unnecessary extension so she probably thinks I’m crazy too.

Totally agree on the home renovations. I absolutely hate having anyone doing work in or around the house. It’s not just strangers coming round, although that’s bad enough, even if my husband could do it, the upheaval of it all just annoys me, then there’s always issues and stress involved. Not worth it.

It's not often I disagree with a majority on here. However, this is one of those occasions... I understand it all! Fancy houses, cars, wine, champagne, holidays, spas, designer bags and shoes and anything else I've missed off this list. I totally get it. And if I had the funds I'd be doing all of it! Meanwhile, for those of you that do, please keep buying designer bags so that I can ogle them when I'm out and about and know that at least one person is living vicariously through you!

In the spirit of this thread, the things I don't understand... cold holidays, when you could be somewhere nice and hot! Every time I look at a cold holiday I inevitably end up booking somewhere hot instead!

These are not expensive, but I don't understand marmite and why anyone would buy it or eat it. And I don't understand why anyone would buy a scone and then put jam directly on it when it's obvious the cream should go on the scone first. Madness!

Flitwickflight · 07/07/2025 18:37

Tattoos, lip filler, highlights, nails. All guaranteed to make the spender look worse, at great expense. Why?

SameDayNewName · 07/07/2025 18:37

Pret a manger. Presumably if you don't have time for something especially nice, you're also near a supermarket? A meal deal is cheaper and nicer.

"Bits and bobs" - usually from somewhere like B&M Bargains, but also Christmas markets (shudder). Wooden "ties", plastic ornaments, trinket boxes, vases too small to hold flowers... just take up room and need dusting. Each one also makes the room they are in, look very slightly worse. Eventually they smash and you can justify throwing them out.

I bulk buy marmite 🤣

Marmite on a crumpet dripping with butter 👌

Because everyone has different taste!! People may think the same about your partner 🤷🏻‍♀️

What’s my partner got to do with a breed of dog?? Bizarre.

The only thing I like from your list is tattoos.

I love my tattoos. I like the way they look 🤷

Dog walkers for small dogs, when the owners are perfectly fit and healthy.

This isn't a judgey thread? It will turn into one

It pretty much instantly became 'things I disapprove of, consider beneath me, and/or judge the fuck out of,' but it was always going to be that way 😁

latetothefisting · 07/07/2025 18:40

Hodgemollar · 07/07/2025 17:04

It’s not something I would spend my money on

Which isn’t the same as not actually understanding though.

Exactly

Most of these responses have ignored OPs actual question and just listed some random stuff they personally don't like.

Youd have to be really unimaginative and unempathetic to honestly not understand why other people might like very normal and popular things like wine, takeaways, haircuts and beauty treatments.

Same with things like private school -you might not agree with it or want it for yourself but you'd have to be pretty thick not to understand why other people like the idea of it

SameDayNewName · 07/07/2025 18:40

Also the majority of "antiques". Same issues as above, but with the added insult that they come with pre-packed dust mites, possibly lead or some other poison, and have been handled loads by dead people 🤢 Just get a new vase, if you really want one. Of better yet, don't bother and stop cluttering your house up with shite.

ComtesseDeSpair · 07/07/2025 18:40

And I don't understand why anyone would buy a scone and then put jam directly on it when it's obvious the cream should go on the scone first.

One of my friends has decided that buying the scones at all in the first place is a waste of money: big spoon, jam, tub of cream, all set.

beetr00 · 07/07/2025 18:41

Laiste · 07/07/2025 15:56

Wine: Vinegary shite.

not been buying Sarsons by mistake ma hen? 😉

Yes, owning a boat = pouring money into the sea, though it does look fun and I would like to have one. Also see: owning horses.

Can confirm both lots of fun and cost a fucking fortune 😜

BunnyVV · 07/07/2025 18:42

Awful takeaways that taste awful and are full of cholesterol and cost loads of money. Beans on toast tastes so much nicer!
I have friends who are seriously struggling financially and they get takeaways because they can’t be bothered to cook or walk to the shop.

Wtf is wrong with a caravan? So judgey.

Why is not understanding caravans judgier than any other thing on this thread?
It’s basically a fibreglass shed pulled slowly by a car until it finds a field. I can’t think of a worse holiday. Except for Camper vans which people spend even more on.

Aside from those mine is also designer bags. You can get beautiful leather ones from a gazillion places. Why does having Mulberry on it make it “nicer” ( aside from it just being about the money).

Yachties · 07/07/2025 18:43

Big weddings when they have no deposit for a house and are renting.
nails and fillers and veneers etc
ubers when they could walk

I've always wanted a bidet and really get this concept especially as I have a septic tank

I could not recommend it more. You'll never go back! You feel so much cleaner and it's just a much pleasanter experience all round.

Weddings/dos, designer clothes/shoes/accessories, expensive cars/motorbikes, make-up/jewellery/beauticians/hairdressers/cosmetic surgery, holidays to expensive and/or cringe destinations, cruises, mortgages for unnecessarily big houses, designer furniture, subscriptions to multiple entertainment platforms, pure breed pets, cigarettes/vapes, tattoos, david lloyd type gyms, horses, boats, tv sets over 40’’, CDs/vinyls/DVDs, brand new smartphones/tablets/laptops/gaming consoles, Christmas presents, sex workers, strip clubs, private schools, fancy wines/spirits, house cleaners, children. And yeah, definitely personalised number plates.

Wow, that’s some list

out of interest, what do you spend money on other than housing, food and basic clothing.
