to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Fake tan, even the good ones are obvious. The hands and feet are always a giveaway. Natural skin will always look better.

fatgirlswims · 07/07/2025 18:17

Labubus/ bag charms
collections of similar items Eg,Irregular choice shoes, loungefly bags, Disney ears

Lots of designer clothes

Disposable plates (mainly US)

Fillers, botox, unnecessary plastic surgery. Duck lips, ridiculously shaped and long false nails. Tattooed eyebrows. (Not tattoos, love tattoos, just not tattooed eyebrows!)

Gambling. It never seems fun to me. Like burning banknotes. The house always wins.

Except the fucking penny falls. The last time I went to Brighton I won so many two-pence pieces, but by this point my interest in the penny falls had waned somewhat, so I still have loads of the fuckers.

An evening in a proper casino can be an experience and night out, so long as you are not an addict nor doing it regularly, I can see the appeal.

Stef3 · 07/07/2025 18:18

Coffee. I have tasted it a couple of times when a young teenager. I am sure I have saved thousands by not drinking it or tea - unlike my husband who loves coffee…

I’m assuming your kids got excellent grades?

They did very well yes. Plus one is part of an Olympic team due to excellent sports facilities and they have learnt languages they never could have. They ( all 3 ) are doing / in very different careers aswell. Each, very much them. We’re glad we moved them. I’m not sure many people who make the choice to go Private would say it was a waste of money.

clothes
weddings
expensive cars
fingernails
resort holidays

Right that's just silly now, you genuinely don't understand why people buy clothes? Really? Are you a naturist?

Yerdug · 07/07/2025 18:20

Ooh this is a judgey thread isn't it? Brilliant.

Absolute wankers that spend money on personalised reg plates, particularly those who spend mo ey trying to spell the make/model of their wanker car.

Taytayslayslay · 07/07/2025 18:20

Face/lip filler. /face or body surgery

My ex went to private school, he failed uni and has a weed habit that his parents pay for.

You’re at least the second poster to mention these plastic containers to store stuff in in the kitchen. I really didn’t know this was a thing. Although I did read the Queen used Tupperware for breakfast cereals 😁

Topseyt123 · 07/07/2025 18:24

Botox treatments and lip fillers. I mean, I get it if you have had an accident or needed surgery and it would help matters, but otherwise no.

Tattoos. Just not for me although two of my three DDs have a few subtle ones - their choice. They are aged 30 and 23 now before anyone jumps on me. Not exactly children anymore.

Had to look this up. Thought it was some new cosmetic procedure I hadn’t heard of 🤣

IsawwhatIsaw · 07/07/2025 18:24

Fancy cars renewed every year or two.
Dubai type holidays..
big lips and brows

Or maybe he just lacks commitment and ability to keep off drugs. I’m not engaging anymore with you as you clearly have a personal issue with Private schools that isn’t interesting or relevant to the wider overall good it does.

clearglassclearmind · 07/07/2025 18:26

Coffee. I may only hace the occasional cup at home but cannot fathom how people can happily spend, what, £5? On a coffee on the go. You cannot tell me it's better than what you can make yourself with a kettle

Weddings/dos, designer clothes/shoes/accessories, expensive cars/motorbikes, make-up/jewellery/beauticians/hairdressers/cosmetic surgery, holidays to expensive and/or cringe destinations, cruises, mortgages for unnecessarily big houses, designer furniture, subscriptions to multiple entertainment platforms, pure breed pets, cigarettes/vapes, tattoos, david lloyd type gyms, horses, boats, tv sets over 40’’, CDs/vinyls/DVDs, brand new smartphones/tablets/laptops/gaming consoles, Christmas presents, sex workers, strip clubs, private schools, fancy wines/spirits, house cleaners, children. And yeah, definitely personalised number plates.

I have so many questions 😂

You never go to the hairdresser?
You don't wear jewellery?
You don't buy or receive Christmas presents?

Me too. I also had to Google micro blading as I thought it was some sort of skateboard 😁

I think it’d be quicker to say what you DO understand people paying money for!

Ah excellent. But I’m sure your kids were either naturally clever or had potential to start with. Not everyone that goes to private school excels. A lot of parents have children that achieve the bare minimum due to them being thickos and would have achieved a lot less if they had went to a state school.

JustSawJohnny · 07/07/2025 18:29

People who regularly use delivery apps, especially for one person and especially for eg a coffee!

Also agree re private number plates, especially if you have an average car. I genuinely think they make people look like nob heads.

I use them - it stops the lentils from wandering their way around the shelf if the bag splits, and keeps the weevils out of the flour. If you’re not especially tidy about cupboards (like me, my cupboards often look like an explosion in the ambient goods section) they’re just neater.

animaginativeusername · 07/07/2025 18:30

Any trend, fashion item which is a short lived must have. Pointy nails, the. Square, long, sharp, 3d. Or then Jeans, skirts, tops, ‘need’ to be a certain length, cut, fit otherwise no dress sense. Shoes ‘need’ to be certain heel. Wallpaper should such a colour, or no feature wall. Just silly and sad, people changing the clothes, furnishings to fit in with trends. How do people have the time and miney
