This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Far-away, long haul expensive holidays e.g. mentioned Maldives. You get the same beach and food in Spain/Canaries for much less money (and only 2-4h flight!). Never-ending home renovations - bottomless pit.

Spain is possibly my favourite country in Europe but you can’t compare their nice to beaches to some of the incredible beaches in places like Thailand, the Phillipines, Malaysia etc. Also those countries can be considerably cheaper than Spain if you avoid the food/upmarket hotels marketed to rich Westeners.

a friend of mine cannot get her head around spending money to eat out whereas I love it. On the flip side she spends money on designer handbags and shoes and I would never do that as have no interest. Horses for courses

Prosecco/champagne
Caviar
Car number plates
Pre-chopped bags of veg as a regular purchase - so much cheaper to buy the unprepared version and take an extra 5 min
Designer clothes
Fancy haircuts (IE taking hours)
There will be many more 😂

I can’t believe you lumped Prosecco next to champagne. 🤣

These

That one's definitely a fake though! The nose is printed wonkily and there's visible stitching around the face. I understand why people would spend money on the real thing as it's so hard to get. But don't understand why anyone would buy blatantly fake Lafufus that often costs just as much or even more than a real one. It's like paying 4K for a counterfeit Louis Vuitton bag.

Handbags - and especially 'designer' handbags. Personally, I'd rather use a plain carrier bag than cart around an expensive advert showing how easily I can be parted with my money.

Agree. I find pockets suffice but them I’m not carting around louds of makeup so I don’t need one.

Can't believe how many people say holidays! 😳
Wow, that is literally what I work for. Obviously pay mortgage and bills first and then rest goes on holidays. Anything from weekend in caravan in Cornwall to California.
Love travelling!

Designer handbags are waste of money in my opinion, what some pay for handbag I can have weekend in Rome 😀

Agreed on both counts

109 % agree with you. Love travelling. It’s good use of money. Designer hand bags are mostly ugly with Ctrl C, Ctrl V prints of their logo and low aesthetic quality.

Take away coffee.

I like a good coffee in a proper cup while sitting in a nice café (even better with cake!), but I don't see the appeal of walking down the street drinking coffee out of a disposable cup.

I love takeaway coffee and don’t like to think about how much I spend on it! I have cut down though as it was a bit ridiculous

ladycardamom · 07/07/2025 18:08

Gambling. I just don't get it! Everything else is each to their own IMO.

Flomingho · 07/07/2025 18:08

Takeaways such as McDonalds and take out coffee from large corporate chains. Like to support independent coffee shops though. I do have a personalised car reg though🤣

Trendyname · 07/07/2025 18:08

100 % not sure about 109%. 😅

MasterBeth · 07/07/2025 18:09

Gambling. It never seems fun to me. Like burning banknotes. The house always wins.

Maybe because they’re both a waste of money ?!

Spacemoon · 07/07/2025 18:09

Lip fillers/Botox
Nails/lashes etc
Big expensive weddings
Designer clothes
Holidays to places that have a 'strip' full of English and Irish bars.
Holidays to Dubai (or similar soulless places full of influencer types).

Yup. It’s the 2025 Marbella.

TheMousePipes · 07/07/2025 18:10

Cars on PCP. I cannot wrap my head around banging half the mortgage out every month on something you’ll never actually own because your identity is tied up in having a ‘premium’ car. Just what the actual fuck?

TomatoSandwiches · 07/07/2025 18:11

Chippendales or those magic Mike nights, the idea leaves me cold and dry iykwim, also only fans, completely bewildered by how popular it apparently is and pay to get a personalised message from a celebrity..... 🤷‍♀️ wtf?

Champagne and prosecco, both absolute swill and leave your mouth tasting and smelling like a dog poo bin oh and on the topic of dags, I have no idea why people opt for Pugs, French bulldogs or Bostin Terriers, they should be bred out imo.

Gigglydancybox · 07/07/2025 18:11

Coatsoff42 · 07/07/2025 16:59

Conceptually, also chewing gum. It’s got no nutrition and you don’t digest anything, and you just chew and chew and then poof, nothing!
I do like chewing gum though, but I also think ‘why am I spending money on this when I could chew a piece of grass and it would probably be more nutritious and cost nothing’

But it cleans your teeth…

Agree on personalised plates. Apart from the really prestigious ones (A1, and the like) I’ve no idea why anyone would want one.

Tattoos - not for me at all. I admire some of the artistry and on some people they look absolutely fabulous. I remember when they used to be a bit edgy though - now everyone and their gran has one. I couldn’t handle the pain and the (possible) regret.

Ring doorbells - apart from the fact they solve more crimes than the police, no idea why I would want one.

Superhansrantowindsor · 07/07/2025 18:13

Handbags that are in the thousands.
Botox.
Lip fillers
Eyebrows
Dubai
Massive SUV’s when you live in the city with one kid.
But I like spending on holidays. I also spend a ridiculous amount on books. We are all just different.

Edited

I'll add buying fakes in general. There was a thing a few years ago about people buying fake ABH/Huda Beauty/Jeffrey Star eyeshadow palettes, with no idea what's in them. (Someone did tests on fake makeup and found all sorts of grim things. Envy They'd rather risk their health than buy a dupe from Revolution/W7/Technic, which doesn't look as fancy but at least it's safe.
I'd never buy fake Harry Potter or Pusheen things either, because I want to support the creators.

Zen · 07/07/2025 18:14

Agree with personalised number plates, weirdly exhibitionist. Expensive designer handbags or really handbags in general, pockets are better. Most of the fugly clothes promoted on style and beauty page, I know my place, I usually prefer the cheap ones. Spiritualist evenings, mediums, clairvoyants. Fillers and plastic surgery that makes them look ridiculous.

SquirrelMadness · 07/07/2025 18:14

I don't understand people who don't understand takeaways. It's a lazy meal when you want a treat. Most restaurants do takeaways now so you can get some delicious food. I understand why people would choose not to spend their money on takeaways but not understanding why anyone would want to seems strange.

I've never understood personalised number plates and I feel like asking someone who has one what pleasure they get out of it would be a bit rude. I would love to know why though.
