to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Buckets of coffee.

Guilty!!

Tiredforfive45 · 07/07/2025 17:52

People who go on 2 or 3 holidays a year to a 3 star Costa Del Shithole when they could go once a year to somewhere much nicer for the same price.

My sister does this as she likes to get away as often as possible but I can’t get on board with it. As OP says though, horses for courses. I understand her reasoning. I would just never do it personally!

When my brother was about 8yo he was asked what his ambition in life was. He replied "to have a personalised numberplate". I'm not really sure why that came out of him, but over 30 years later, he hasn't bought one yet!

LillyPJ · 07/07/2025 17:54

Handbags - and especially 'designer' handbags. Personally, I'd rather use a plain carrier bag than cart around an expensive advert showing how easily I can be parted with my money.

Matronic6 · 07/07/2025 17:54

Designer clothes for kids.

We have largely replaced toilet roll in our house 🫢

I'm sure some people do think it's grim. It started for us with reusable nappies and cloths for the children, and then we came to the conclusion that toilet paper is disgusting. If you got shit anywhere else on your body you wouldn't be satisfied with wiping it off with paper. So now we use a bidet attachment / reusable wipes combo. The wipes go in a wet bag inside a sealed bucket once used, then the whole lot goes in the washing machine when the bag is full. I find it so much more hygienic now but I expect others would need some time to come round to the idea.

We do keep loo rolls on hand for guests!

I've always wanted a bidet and really get this concept especially as I have a septic tank

We did. That and the class sizes along with my eldest at state spent a year teaching maths to the kid next to him. Private was the next nearest school. Although we would hav travelled to get to one tbh. Best thing we’ve ever spent money on. If people find an excellent state though and hav no kids at private I get why they might think it’s a waste of money to go private. It is after all
a lot of money 🥴.

I’m assuming your kids got excellent grades?

maybein2022 · 07/07/2025 17:57

Expensive cars, especially if replaced every year or two on finance

Personalised number plates

This one is controversial, but expensive skin care routines and products. My skin genuinely does better with very little

See also, expansive shampoo and conditioner

Designer bags

Botox

Regular manicures- I sometimes get one before a holiday but not always, even then.

Probably more, if I thought about it.

But, I do spend money on stuff people have mentioned on here, so no judgement!

Creamteasandbumblebees · 07/07/2025 17:57

Stupidly expensive prams/pushchairs or expensive baby clothes.

I personally don't give two hoots what people spend their money on. It's none of my business. For a non judgey thread it's a very judgey thread and everyone has jumped on the bandwagon. It's none of our business people!

StinkyCheeseMoose · 07/07/2025 17:58

Take away coffee.

I like a good coffee in a proper cup while sitting in a nice café (even better with cake!), but I don't see the appeal of walking down the street drinking coffee out of a disposable cup.

Static caravans. Incredible money pit.

Yes absolutely this. People have wasted hundreds of thousands on statics. The depreciation on them as to be seen to be believed.

Anyone thinking of buying one needs to join Holiday Park Action Group on Facebook before they even consider it!!!

I don't understand why anyone buys a dog or cat when there are so many waiting to be rehomed.

For me personally it’s because I don’t know the history of a dog needing rehomed so I bought a pedigree pup, however did not pay an over inflated price for him

anotherside · 07/07/2025 18:02

The obvious one is buying a new car, unless you’re basically rolling in it. Otherwise it’s just burning money.

Meadowfinch · 07/07/2025 18:03

Tattoos
Vaping, smoking, cannabis
Lip fillers
Breast enlargement
Sky
Netflix
Shoes that they never wear
Veg box - just go to a farm shop once a week and pay 60% less
Takeout coffee at £4 a cup
£600 hand bags

I send my ds to independent school instead. He got a scholarship & wanted to go. Ofsted said our local state school wasn't safe. So it seemed the obvious solution.

And they've been brilliant. If I need to travel for work, he books into the boarding house and I've not had to stress about a signal failure or a blocked motorway or a missed flight since. They've become my support network. For me it has been worth every penny.

Trendyname · 07/07/2025 18:03

Designer hand bags and expensive designer clothes with ugly repeat logo when there are so many beautiful bags and clothing available in higher price range.

But those brands are not recognisable by an average person.

kerstina · 07/07/2025 18:04

Tattoos if they have multiple ones.
nails being gelled or painted.

DevonMum123 · 07/07/2025 18:04

Can't believe how many people say holidays! 😳
Wow, that is literally what I work for. Obviously pay mortgage and bills first and then rest goes on holidays. Anything from weekend in caravan in Cornwall to California.
Love travelling!

Designer handbags are waste of money in my opinion, what some pay for handbag I can have weekend in Rome 😀

Trendyname · 07/07/2025 18:05

Also the cosmetic surgeries and fillers. They rarely enhance a person’s looks. Right now I am thinking of Jeff Bezos bride whose name I forgot and too lazy to google.

diterictur · 07/07/2025 18:05

I don't think private school is a waste of money at all.

I do think claiming to do it doing it for extracurriculars is very poor value for money given that you could basically pay for any extracurricular outside school time and a chauffeur to take your child there for considerably less money than school fees.. but if course that's why no one really does it for the violin lessons

SapphireSeptember · 07/07/2025 18:05

Getting your nails done. Someone told me it only cost £40 at the place she went to! I can buy several nail polishes for that and have the fun of painting them myself, (literally just bought a set of six nail polishes that cost about £40 from Orly,) plus one bottle will have way more applications. But I do have the top coat, base coat, cuticle remover, nail file etc myself. (I own one nail file and I've had it since 2012, it's the Leighton Denny crystal one. I think it was £12.50 when I bought it. Absolutely worth it!) But I'm a nail polish collector, so I like having the bottles all to myself. The one time I had my nails done I went and found the colour and bought two bottles, because it was the one I wore on my wedding day and it matched my dress. 💜
