Was I unreasonable to post this picture (privacy)

DD competes in a sport. She’s ok but has never won anything. She enjoys it though. She’s trained a lot recently and had a competition I was able to attend - and she won!!! I managed to snap a once in a lifetime action shot of her doing so as well.

I have a very small private Facebook - fewer than 100 people. Family, friends and a few school parents. I wanted to post the picture, mainly for the older relatives. Now, also visible in shot was DDs friend, coming in behind her. Friend is lovely, mum is a little difficult. She’s super crunchy and quick to share her views. I checked with her before posting the picture as her child was also in it, not expecting any problems as she regularly posts her own pictures of her children. However she said that she didn’t want her daughter on anyone else’s social media -so I posted the picture with her daughter cropped out as much as possible and with the remaining half of her face blurred.
She’s now messaged me asking me to remove the whole picture as people who know the girls compete in the same team could guess that it’s her daughter. You cannot tell it’s her daughter at all! It’s half a blurred face, an arm and a leg.

Am I right to be a bit cross or have I misjudged a parenting/ privacy issue?

Not every parent is Jealous of the success of other people’ s children

Maybe she isnt envious exactly, but hates other people seeing her child come second. To some people their child being first, and seen to be first, is all that matters.

I suspect that she would cheerfully post a photo of her DD "So proud that she won today!!" and not give a thought that the child coming in second was on it. But when its her child in second, well then it matters.

Upload it to chatgpt and ask it to remove the child in the background

Yeah don't do this. I think the mum would be even more upset.

Might be fun to tell her that you had though, maybe her head would explode.

Sorry, feeling bombastic, had an epically bad 24 hours.

What clean up button?

Make sure pic saved on your phone. Open it.
On the bottom there are four smaller icons. One has three squiggly lines. Press that. Then another button appears that says ‘clean up’ with a picture of a rubber below. You press that then in the picture press down on the area you want to delete.

I’ve probably made it sound super complicated but it really isn’t! It flashes for a bit but then deletes the bit you want to get rid of.

I couldn't get worked up about people posting pics where my kids are blurred and unrecognisable but I definitely wouldn't trust openAI with photos of my kids.

I'm quite shocked at how many people are recommending to use chatgpt to edit the photo.

On another note, I could be wrong but i think previously chatgpt wasn't permitted to recreate images of real people for safety reasons which might be why your dd looks like 25 in the edited photos. They have to make significant changes to reduce the likeness to anyone real. I am not sure what the policy is in the later or paid versions.

Leftrightmiddle · 02/07/2025 23:32

Take photo off Facebook.
Reload photo but select people who can see photo to just select family and friends. Make sure the parent is able to view post

NoSoapJustUseShowerGel · 02/07/2025 23:33

The mum is being unreasonable if you cropped most of her out and disguised the remaining bit.

How odd. I have an iPhone 15 as well but the larger screen one. Don’t think that should make a difference?

You asked for consent, she said no, then you posted it anyway. You have no right to be cross at her. You were out of order and disrespectful.

I don't post pictures of my children on SM, and I'd have no qualms about telling you to immediately remove photos of my children, even if you've blurred their faces.

Chintzcardboard · 03/07/2025 00:05

Replace her DD with a lizard image,

KenAdams · 03/07/2025 00:06

If you know someone with a Samsung S25 ask them to do it, its brilliant. I could do it but you obviously don't know me so that won't work either!

FruityCider · 03/07/2025 00:30

Google Pixels have a very good feature for removing people/things, and Samsung. Seconding asking around. The women does sound OTT though.

This is so fucking ridiculous

AutumnLover1989 · 03/07/2025 06:32

Maybe the only reason she wants it removed is because she hates that her daughter didn't come first? 🙄

Barrenfieldoffucks · 03/07/2025 06:56

Send it to me, I'll sort it on my pixel

loopyloulou87 · 03/07/2025 07:14

Change the privacy setting on that post so she can’t see it then she’ll think you’ve deleted it.

Schools just blob on the heads of children so they aren't identifiable. It sounds like your approach was reasonable.

This! If have 9 children in my class of 32 who don’t have the relevant permissions for photographs to be used. We stick cute animal faces over them in group shots.

OP…turn the child into a meerkat 👌🏻

arcticpandas · 03/07/2025 08:32

midlifesharp · 02/07/2025 20:42

But this is essentially what I did. I just used the blur tool and removed her face. She’s a pink blob now.

Well then, she doesn't have any reason to complain but she probably will anyway for the reason your husband cited. Just ignore.

tammienorrie · 03/07/2025 08:34

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 02/07/2025 17:53

If the girl isn't identifiable, the mum is being batshit.

Agree and from what the OP says she has form for being awkward and “crunchy”.
