Starmer will be gone by this time next year.

This government is imploding right before our eyes, despite a huge (but shallow) majority. People didn’t vote for Labour, as much as they voted against the diabolical Tories in the last election.

Coupled with that, the calibre of MPs in general, but especially the new Labour MPs is shockingly low. These are people who have never had real jobs, and found themselves accidentally in charge of the country. Most them would struggle to use a calculator, let alone understand how the economy works.

Bond markets are already punishing ‘Rachel from accounts’. Cue the insults about misogyny despite the fact that calling her from accounts is an insult to those who actually work in accounts. Gilts are already above when Truss was in charge, meaning the situation is worse. Crazy tax hikes are on the way. Top rate taxpayers are leaving the country in droves.

Boat crossings are at a record high. Unemployment is up, inflation is on the increase. The country is at very real risk of recession.

If Starmer falls, his replacement candidates are terrifying. It’s possible the government could fall within 2 years or so. The chances of Reform getting into power will increase many fold if there is a snap election in that timeframe.

Wonder if the economically illiterate, constantly wanting to constantly shake the magic money tree, are ready for Reform.

My bloke’s family were saying thick as mince before Cummings was born.

So many threads like this lately.
All using the same kind of language, phrases, works, nicknames.
It's almost as though someone has a generator churning them out.

Labour voters do the nicknames about the Tories and Farage, so yes, very telling.

Yes I call farage a cunt.

That's not a nickname, that's just honesty.

And it just gets worse. Not only are individually wealthy top rate taxpayers leaving. Businesses are leaving too.

Exxon pulled out of the UK yesterday because of Red Ed’s crazy obsession with killing our oil industry. We already have the highest energy costs in the world, it only gets worse. And not Astra Zeneca are reportedly looking to move from London stock exchange to New York.

This country is a disaster. Wonder if the ‘eat the rich’ crowd have any ideas on how their freebies will be paid for.

Where do you get the idea they are pulling out of the UK? They still run a huge refinery near me - although long term it would be good to say goodbye to them.

Can't be any worse than Labour, with their sticky fingers in the troughs.

Surely you mean snouts?

That was it! Snouts. Of course! I knew there was something wrong with that sentence...just couldn't remember what. Peri-m brain.

Whilst I’m not saying Labour are perfect, some of this makes me despair.

The economy is turning. They’re digging us out of the huge black hole the Tories created. There might have been a few slight false steps but it’s nothing like what we’ve come away from.

And they’re doing the most important thing which is mending our relationships with our friends and allies. This has actually been an extraordinary feat in such a short time. It may not be enough- we really need to be back in the EU or at least the single market - but they’ve done well.

On top of this, there’s no credible alternative. The Tories have completely lost their way, Lib Dems won’t get anyone’s vote, Reform are not only a shower of shite who can’t govern (see local councils) but they’re up to their eyes in russian money. At the moment, it’s Keir or Putin (to be blunt).

They're digging us in to a bigger hole! That's the whole trouble!

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 02/07/2025 08:16

So you're going to be fooled into voting Reform next time?

Probably. She only voted Labour as I remember because she thought the Tories were taxing her too much. We know that Reform are offering the moon on a stick regarding taxation.

mumda · 02/07/2025 08:34

Do we want the UK to be a place where our children can thrive and reap the rewards of their education? Currently the NHS doesn't help the people who train here to get jobs (threads on both nurses and doctors)

Business can't thrive with the extra burden on taxes and energy bills.
Housing is being squeezed from all sides. Landlord rules tightened again meaning fewer rentals.
Mass migration has been continual and puts pressures on the things ordinary people need.

There’ll likely be fewer people fooled into voting Labour at next GE.

Yes, to give him his due, Starmer is a credible figure on the world stage. I'd like him to be a bit more positive about the EU (i.e. some intimation that rejoining might one day be a possibility would be nice) but compared to the absolutely cringe-making lack of knowledge or professionalism seem by members of the last government, he's doing well.

And I'm not a Starmer fan at all.

User135644 · 02/07/2025 08:40

Not just two tier Keir. Labour's days are numbered. They have to go.

Beamur · 02/07/2025 08:41

I voted Labour.
I'm pretty happy actually with how they are doing. One rebellion against a controversial piece of legislation should not topple a Leader. It was a very truthful reaction by many MP's.
They have fulfilled the majority of their election promises.
I'd vote Labour again if there was an election next week.
There's a climate crisis in case you haven't noticed. If Exxon leave because the situation in the UK is less favourable to a fossil fuel producer, that's an economic loss but hard choices need to be taken. The Govt are making investments in cleaner energy which is better for everyone longer term.

Genevieva · 02/07/2025 08:41

In which case he should call a general election instead of resigning. We need a Canadian style requirements for a new general election if the PM changes, as they lead the strategic vision for the country. Change the PM and we no longer have what was voted for.

Beamur · 02/07/2025 08:42

Any intimation of returning to the EU would be gleefully seized by Reform. Would not be a smart thing to say, or frankly do, right now.

DisforDarkChocolate · 02/07/2025 08:43

I'm incredibly disappointed in this government. I voted for a Labour government, this isn't that. They're more focus on Daily Mail clicks and trying to show they can be 'Tory' when it's about business (despite the fact they fucked the economy).

I wanted bold, strong and people focused leadership and I got a shower of shit.

Bridport · 02/07/2025 08:43

They are not.

I remember when people complaining about the Tories were called hysterical, shrill and full of hyperbole. The pasting remain voters got for being Remoaners and 'Get over it'.

Now the shoe's on the other foot and the wall of hysteria is at a whole new level.

Whatafustercluck · 02/07/2025 08:44

I see that Chris Mason is now trolling the mumsnet boards. Nice try, Chris. They're still nowhere near as bad as the past 14 years, however much you try to spin it.
