Starmer will be gone by this time next year.

This government is imploding right before our eyes, despite a huge (but shallow) majority. People didn’t vote for Labour, as much as they voted against the diabolical Tories in the last election.

Coupled with that, the calibre of MPs in general, but especially the new Labour MPs is shockingly low. These are people who have never had real jobs, and found themselves accidentally in charge of the country. Most them would struggle to use a calculator, let alone understand how the economy works.

Bond markets are already punishing ‘Rachel from accounts’. Cue the insults about misogyny despite the fact that calling her from accounts is an insult to those who actually work in accounts. Gilts are already above when Truss was in charge, meaning the situation is worse. Crazy tax hikes are on the way. Top rate taxpayers are leaving the country in droves.

Boat crossings are at a record high. Unemployment is up, inflation is on the increase. The country is at very real risk of recession.

If Starmer falls, his replacement candidates are terrifying. It’s possible the government could fall within 2 years or so. The chances of Reform getting into power will increase many fold if there is a snap election in that timeframe.

Wonder if the economically illiterate, constantly wanting to constantly shake the magic money tree, are ready for Reform.

I was honestly starting to get less angry about Labour, the decision to hold a national enquiry into raping gangs, to push for guidelines after the SC ruling, to revise the ECHRC, the benefits review…
Some backwards peddling but he is listening and trying to keep the church in the middle of the village.
If they kick him out and he is replaced by Rayner, Burnham, Khan, Milligan’s etc. it’s going to be catastrophic, I would be very afraid of some of the measures they will implement, they will not make it until the GE and it’s going to be a victory for Reform, but in a much more troubled climate.

Could the Left of the Left understand they don’t have a majority without some centrists, and they never will, and process their grief about it rather than try to take over the party and impose their views from the top?

Well I hadn't heard it until DC.said it and I'm no spring chicken. And if you Google "who said thick as mince" most of the entries are about him.

There's no shame in admiring him Jorgua. Just own it.

Nope. 'thick as mince' is an incredibly common colloquialism, especially in Scotland. Just because t'internet references Cummings doesn't mean he invented the term. I've just googled the term and there's no reference to Cummings at all on the first page, so not sure what you googled to get your results?

Always the same with Labour; reward the work shy at the expense of the grafters.
👏👏👏

And for the Tories, it’s the grifters at the expense of the grafters.

Like I said, we get the government we deserve. If we can’t have a grown up conversation about entitlement or necessary levels of taxation, or civil and personal responsibility, followed through by legislation, what do you expect?

Dangermoo · 02/07/2025 06:53

There is no way Raynor would get as far as being PM.

There would be riots first- can you imagine?

Dianne Abbott, as Home Sec was always a frightening prospect, but this one is even worse. Labour won't have the momentum to take them into a second term.

JustMyView13 · 02/07/2025 08:00

Putting the economics to one side, the NHS has been markedly improved locally. It still has a long way to go, but it’s at least accessible now.
I don’t think any political party is particularly good at the moment. I don’t think Labour are getting it right on the economic fronts. But I do think they’re the best option we have today, and Kier is the best available person to run the Labour Party. I don’t think anyone within the party will do a better job, but plenty would do worse. So it’s all well and good wanting him to be gone, but then what?
I’d vote for anyone before I vote for Reform, and I honestly can’t believe people are buying their crap.

From recollection (and while I slightly agree that it does have misogynistic undertones) it was due to Rachel Reeves having lied about her background and exaggerated her work record. Which the other people you mentioned didn't.

Ah I didnt know that. I thought it was just a term used to belittle her that she was out of her depth.

Sorry. To most people it's now a Cummingsism. The PP was just quoting her hero.

I haven't taken it that way. Although she is out of her depth too obviously.

Don’t talk nonsense - most people would struggle to identify Cummings. It’s a longstanding colloquialism.

It absolutely isn’t and just you saying it doesn’t make it true.

Tapoopoo · 02/07/2025 08:09

"Thick as mince" isnt a Cummingism to most people at all. 🤣

I am a very old person and as I’m Scottish I’ve been saying and hearing it a very long time.
just because it’s not used much in England doesn’t make it Dominic Cummings’ catch phrase.

Tapoopoo · 02/07/2025 08:13

Today I shall declare that I made up "nice weather for ducks" and it shall forthwith become a Tapoopooism.

Viviennemary · 02/07/2025 08:14

The labour party are a rabble. In or out of office. They always revert to type. They fooled me into voting for them last time. They won't again.

It really isn't!

Just because you'd never heard the phrase before Cummings used it, that doesn't mean that "most people" associate the phrase with him. It's a phrase that has been in circulation for years.

Sorry...I'm being silly. It's just like the use of "mom" which people say is an Americanisim unless you're from Brum when you go mental at the very suggestion !! Very amusing.

Catsandcheese · 02/07/2025 08:14

It is better this bill is sorted out before it becomes law rather than a climb down afterwards. At least the labour leadership shows they are open to their MPs concerns rather than for example Teresa May triggering the exit from the EU and putting a timer on that before we had any kind of idea of what this would look like.

Im not old and Im not Scottish but even I know its been used for a long time before Cummings.

Coincidently Cummings was a disappointment because I was expecting him to be like a woman scorned and tell everyone where the bodies were but he just went away with a wimper. What a lot of hot air he was.
