Starmer will be gone by this time next year.

This government is imploding right before our eyes, despite a huge (but shallow) majority. People didn’t vote for Labour, as much as they voted against the diabolical Tories in the last election.

Coupled with that, the calibre of MPs in general, but especially the new Labour MPs is shockingly low. These are people who have never had real jobs, and found themselves accidentally in charge of the country. Most them would struggle to use a calculator, let alone understand how the economy works.

Bond markets are already punishing ‘Rachel from accounts’. Cue the insults about misogyny despite the fact that calling her from accounts is an insult to those who actually work in accounts. Gilts are already above when Truss was in charge, meaning the situation is worse. Crazy tax hikes are on the way. Top rate taxpayers are leaving the country in droves.

Boat crossings are at a record high. Unemployment is up, inflation is on the increase. The country is at very real risk of recession.

If Starmer falls, his replacement candidates are terrifying. It’s possible the government could fall within 2 years or so. The chances of Reform getting into power will increase many fold if there is a snap election in that timeframe.

Wonder if the economically illiterate, constantly wanting to constantly shake the magic money tree, are ready for Reform.

People were warned to be careful what they wished for.

I don’t think reform will get in, but I do think that there could be a Tory reform coalition.

The “the tories have done” line has run its course. Were a year in, and labour have achieved precisely nothing. In fact they’ve pretty much had to reverse every decision they’ve made, and none of it has anything to do with the tories.

the truth is that we’re not unique, and we currently are in a period of world instability at the moment.

most other countries are in a similar position at the moment, so what’s the answer?

Oh, I don't know......maybe have a read over your morning cuppa. Our council is mentioned in the article. Absolutely true.

I will have a look. I haven't heard of the byline times though. Does it have a particular bias?

I have no love for Reform. Just a great dislike of Labour government. I suspect many people feel the same way. Which will mean Reform have a good chance of getting in so I hope they get their house in order, for the sake of the country in 2029.

HangryLikeTheHulk · 02/07/2025 07:21

I like the current government, and I’m happy with Starmer as PM.

Some companies I’ve spoken to recently would say we’re already in a recession.

We’ve been in recession for the last 2 1/2 years if you actually look at grass roots Recruitment i.e. not very much

Absolutely terrifying but entirely predictable 😩

I am soooo disappointed by their crapness. At least with the Conservatives they were honest aboit being lying scum and didnt try to hide the fact that they were lining their own pockets.

But yes "Rachel from accounts" is misogynist. You didnt get "Rishi from accounts" or "Kwasi from accounts" (admittedly he wasnt there long enough to get any sort of nickname) or "Jez from accounts".

From recollection (and while I slightly agree that it does have misogynistic undertones) it was due to Rachel Reeves having lied about her background and exaggerated her work record. Which the other people you mentioned didn't.

They can’t get their house in order - they want to reduce taxation to virtually nothing, allow billionaires into the country to pay no tax, and are promising to do this while delivering a world class NHS. It’s clearly totally impossible but you only have to look to America to see how gullible voters are at believing that billionaires have the working man’s best interests at heart 😢

They have 4 years. Although Labour had 14 and still managed to be completely useless I suppose.

Well you can't say the lefties don't have a sense of humour. An excellent (and original) comeback.

Didn’t make much sense, maybe they need the morning coffee.

NeelyOHara · 02/07/2025 06:39

If Kier goes we will get Angela Raynor, then we are completely fucked. I think Kier is by far the better option.

KEIR

RunningJo · 02/07/2025 07:31

It’s all such a shit show isn’t it, if an election was called now I would have absolutely no idea who to vote for.

Nagginthenag · 02/07/2025 07:34

Quirkswork, one of Byline Times founders is former Spectator, so not a lefty......

Yogabearmous · 02/07/2025 07:36

People are desperate for change , but then The public and media go mad when anyone tries to implement anything. We need welfare reform - that is it - we can’t keep paying out like we are , billions of pounds, but as soon as you mention it people are protesting. There is a total lack of reality within government and the public. It’s madness all round.

Welliesandtweed · 02/07/2025 07:37

Dangermoo · 02/07/2025 06:53

There is no way Raynor would get as far as being PM.

Thank god. She can barely string a sentence. I'm a bit embarrassed hearing her talk.

Quirkswork · 02/07/2025 06:59

"Thick as mince". Great quote by Dominic Cummings who you presumably admire.

I see nothing wrong in a nickname. Are we supposed to respect this travesty of a PM? Two Tier Keir very neatly sums up his approach to many issues in this country, mainly due to.his warped ideology.

What are you on about? Dominic Cummings did not invent that colloquialism. If I said "close the door" yesterday and you say it tomorrow, are you quoting me?

Tapoopoo · 02/07/2025 07:41

My city has always been red. Our mayor is now a a guy who has no idea about politics and has had a few too many hits to the head but he got a huge majority because people agreed with what he was saying (he is buying into Farage hook, line and sinker). I will be very, very surprised if my city didnt turn Reform at the next election. I would be ashamed of it but am expecting it.

Thing is, the tories have destroyed the country, labour are an absolute shower and are looking no better. The other parties aren't making enough noise to get noticed.

Farage is pretending to be "the common man" and is very, very good at manipulating people's fears. He stands oit from the other politicians because he is good at soundbites. He is engaging people who are disenfranchised by politics. The vast majority of people dont look into actual policies or how it will really work. Farage will say some "I'll stop the boats" while pictured in a cheap looking suit, with a pint in Weatherspoons. People relate to that and it feels much different to everything that has gone before. People dont see that it's a carefully curated and in all honesty, probably dont care, they just need something different.

Tell the people of Scotland that they have been using a quote by Cummings for decades 🙄

Well I hadn't heard it until DC.said it and I'm no spring chicken. And if you Google "who said thick as mince" most of the entries are about him.

There's no shame in admiring him Jorgua. Just own it.

Labour focusing now on targeting savings. Always the same with them; reward the work shy at the expense of the grafters.

It's his catch phrase now I'm afraid! According to Google! The People of Scotland will have to just lump it.
