was laying bed when i heard my dog barking at the front of the house. when she should be safely locked up in the back yard. went to look out the back window and the back gate was wide open dog no where to be seen!

the back gate is usually locked, i dont know why it wasnt last night but i cant even remember who opened it last so cant blame anyone for that.

cue me getting up immediatley and searching streets for dog. luckily she had come back of her own accord and was waiting at the back gate while i was looking round the front for her !

dp thinks that this is forgivable as who ever let her out probably did because they were sick of her barking. i think that if this is the casae they should have to come to me to complain and not just let my family out!

the dog does bark but only when she hears noises. although this noise can be just a car and usually is. on a weekend her barking is worse because she can hear people coming home in taxis and drunks walking past.

but if she is barking for more than a couple of minutes at a time i will go and see what she is barking at which stops her.

we live oppposite a bus depo and two very busy roads so there is every chance that the dog could have been run over, she is a terrier so it is her nature to hunt and kill, she could very easily have gotten hold of some ones pet bunny, guniea pig, chickens, kitten (she is scared of cats i have two and the bully her but could easily kill a kitten), for all who ever let out knows she could be a biting dog and could have got hold of a child, also who ever did do it must live in my street as we have alley gates so they would also know that i have a four year old dd who would be gutted if her dog was hurt.

am absolutely livid that some one would be so inconsiderate dp still seems to think this acceptable (but admits it is wrong he is just not annoyed by it) as the dog could have woke them up

"her barking is only a problem for dp. the dog was here first he will have to learn to deal with her".

This thread is ridiculous.

LittleBella · 25/05/2008 20:50

You are more barking than your dog

duchesse · 25/05/2008 20:54

Micci- I think you're right that it's important to find someone who is a trained dog behaviourist rather than just a trainer, but I think most trainers are also behaviourists, aren't they? They couldn't do their job without understanding the why and the how. And I think that to a certain extent dogs is dogs whatever the breed, so I don't think it would really matter that the trainer you find is not a JR specialist.

Toodleoo · 25/05/2008 20:55

Hijac sorry - Lewsfan please could you give me the details of the trainer you recommended earlier, I am in Beds.

Thanks.

micci25 · 25/05/2008 20:58

sorry lf i did not realise that you were a trainer my dog is in no way aggressive, she is barky mainly during the day, i dont know if it is the terriers up the street my dp can hear as both me my sister and my neighbours all say that she does not bark a lot a night.

i truely 100% believe that she is of no danger to anyone, her barking at people is merely a detterent to keep them away if they do get too close in spite of her barking she will back down. she has never bitten anyone.

i know this from experience as i have had help catching her during one of her escapes by strangers and while she will bark and growl at them while they are trying to catch them she calms as soon as they actaully have hold of her.

i have no idea why she is so fearfull of things/people as she has never been abused by anyone (unless it was her owners as a puppy but surely she would have forgotten this by now?) could be that the cats bully her?

just looked through some of your posts and no she doesnt jump on peoples laps/the furniture. she doesnt pull excessively on her lead either but will pull if she can smell something exciting/sees something she wants to chase. if i stop moving she stops pulling. i really dont think that she believes she is the alpha dog but would be happy to listen to any tips you have? regarding her fear of noise/people/unknown dogs?

after reading some stuff on the net i have decided that her fear of the rain is the antcipation of thunder which terrifies her, but how do i stop her being afraid of thunder?

also the trainer that i am seeing has said that she does train the dog she trains the owner to understand what the dogs needs are and why they are behaving in a problematic way. she has said that she will only need to see me and the dog once in order to recommend how to take her training further and will then hace a follow up visit two weeks later to see how things and if we require further help! does this sound right to you? she was recommended by my vet who knows my dog and her fear problems well.

I am glad oyu are taking this in hadn, micci. but i have to categorically say, as someone whose house backs onto a garden with a dog that barks in teh day and at night, it is incredibly annoying and frustrating. and the sooner it is dealt with the better.

hercules1 · 25/05/2008 21:01

Micca - your dog is aggressive. It's aggressive to other dogs and as you now say has growled at people. It really is a matter of time before it bites. A scared dog is a dangerous dog, really, it is.
Your dog is like this as you havent stimulated it enough, dont walk it enough, havent trained it, havent socialised it etc.

hercules1 · 25/05/2008 21:03

My dogs have never growled at anyone ever. They have never growled at another dog ever. I can say that they are not aggressive. However I would never trust them as they are dogs and therefore walk them adequately each day, maintain training all the time and mentally stimulate them each day.

im not expecting miracles chequers i know that it will take time which is why i am waiting till we move i wont have the time to be consistent with training whilst moving.

hercules1 · 25/05/2008 21:08

Micca- you need to make the time or rehouse the dog. I am not being horrible but do it for the sake of the dog.

lulumama · 25/05/2008 21:13

when are you moving?

micci25 · 25/05/2008 21:16

as soon as possible we are renovating dp's house as it was not safe for the children he was meant to this before dd2 was born (who is now 1) but never bothered getting the work started so i got my dad involved and things are moving along nicely, he even has a kitchen now, its not in the kitchen though its in the dining room! but that should be sorted soon. as soon as the dds room, bathroom, and kitchen are done we will be moving there and doing the rest around us.

OP posts:
DirtySexyMummy · 25/05/2008 21:19

Well, given that you don't even know when, I wouldn't wait til you have moved to start the training.

Get it done now, or get rid of the dog.

lulumama · 25/05/2008 21:20

so potentially, still several motnhs, in which which the dog still barks and teh behaviour becomes more entrenched... start doing something NOW, it will carry over when you move.. most dogs are trainable quite quickly if you get stuck in

AitchTwoCiao · 25/05/2008 21:26

i thought the trainer had a waiting list?

micci25 · 25/05/2008 21:26

no it wont be several months the kitchen is assembled and ready to be fitted same with the bathroom, just need the walls tiling first, while dp is waiting to get his discount on the tiles the dds bedroom will be plastered ready to call in the decorator so am hoping it will be a matter of weeks. a month at most.

OP posts:
micci25 · 25/05/2008 21:27

yes she does have a waiting list which is why we are on the list now, we will be moved in by the time we reach the top of the list.

OP posts:
lulumama · 25/05/2008 21:32

well, i hope it is as quick as that. in the meantime, dog is still barking, day and night. and you are not tackling it ! buy a book about dog behaviour, start doing something now.

micci25 · 25/05/2008 21:36

well i have already established from the nighbours on one side that the dog does not bark a lot during the night. and i tackle her daytime barking by taking away what she is barking at, closing the curtains and bringing her inside. she is not just left to bark for as long as she chooses too. i have been trying to research her behavior on the net but nothing seems to apply to her problems apart from getting her an anti barking collar, which imo would only make her more fearfull.
