was laying bed when i heard my dog barking at the front of the house. when she should be safely locked up in the back yard. went to look out the back window and the back gate was wide open dog no where to be seen!

the back gate is usually locked, i dont know why it wasnt last night but i cant even remember who opened it last so cant blame anyone for that.

cue me getting up immediatley and searching streets for dog. luckily she had come back of her own accord and was waiting at the back gate while i was looking round the front for her !

dp thinks that this is forgivable as who ever let her out probably did because they were sick of her barking. i think that if this is the casae they should have to come to me to complain and not just let my family out!

the dog does bark but only when she hears noises. although this noise can be just a car and usually is. on a weekend her barking is worse because she can hear people coming home in taxis and drunks walking past.

but if she is barking for more than a couple of minutes at a time i will go and see what she is barking at which stops her.

we live oppposite a bus depo and two very busy roads so there is every chance that the dog could have been run over, she is a terrier so it is her nature to hunt and kill, she could very easily have gotten hold of some ones pet bunny, guniea pig, chickens, kitten (she is scared of cats i have two and the bully her but could easily kill a kitten), for all who ever let out knows she could be a biting dog and could have got hold of a child, also who ever did do it must live in my street as we have alley gates so they would also know that i have a four year old dd who would be gutted if her dog was hurt.

am absolutely livid that some one would be so inconsiderate dp still seems to think this acceptable (but admits it is wrong he is just not annoyed by it) as the dog could have woke them up

have you thought about chaining her up? is she an outdoor dog?

cluelessnchaos · 25/05/2008 09:51

can you not keep her in at night?

rosybud · 25/05/2008 09:52

Does she bark a lot? Maybe keep her in more, she might be driving the neighbours mad.

SmugColditz · 25/05/2008 09:52

Hmmmm barking dog would drive me friggin nuts, if she's barking outside you should get her in.

JodieG1 · 25/05/2008 09:53

I would definitely keep he in at night if she barked, it isn't fair on your neighbours being woken up all the time when she barks even if it is a couple of mins. Broken sleep is like torture.

micci25 · 25/05/2008 09:53

she is kept outdoors on a night and has a kennel as we cannot trust her in the house she has not get got the hang of holding her bladder till morning iyswim! even though she is three!

but she cannot get out of the backgate herself the latch is too high up for her to reach and like i said it is usually locked i will have to make sure that it is locked every night now am just really upset that one of my neighbours thought that this was an okay thing to do.

SmugColditz · 25/05/2008 09:55

I would have done it if the dog was barking all night - so shoot me. My children's sleep is more important than a neighbour's dog. If she lives outside, you need to bring her in at night. Her peeing is your problem. Don't make it your neighbour's.

RubySlippers · 25/05/2008 09:55

a barking dog late at night or early in the morning would drive me crazy

i don't think they are cruel/evil - possibly sleep deprived and pissed off tho'

bethoo · 25/05/2008 09:56

try a crate for her to sleep in. a dog does not foul where they sleep

VanillaPumpkin · 25/05/2008 09:56

I have a dog that barks when someone walks past the house or comes to our door. She drives me nuts and she is mine.
I don't think your dog should have been let out but truly I don't think a barking dog should be out all night either. How annoying for your poor neighbours.

SmugColditz · 25/05/2008 09:56

And think of this - someone who would let a dog out the make her shut the hell up may not be averse to sedating her. It's easily done. Bring her in for her own safety

puffling · 25/05/2008 09:56

Yes but she'll continue barking. Are you not bothered that this might be disturbing your neighbours' sleep?

cluelessnchaos · 25/05/2008 09:57

I can understand that you are upset and worried about what could have happened but I would be pretty hacked off if I was your neighbour. I would keep her in and just clean up whatever mess in the morning.

micci25 · 25/05/2008 09:57

she is usually in till we go to bed which is not till v late and does not bark every night at lot of nights yes, admittedly she usually does bark most how ever this is normally at more acceptable times as the buses and taxis that she barks at stop earlier during the week than on a weekend. if any of the nieghbours had told me that they had a problem with her i certainly would have looked into training or another way to keep her confined on a night, but no one did.

OP posts:
rosybud · 25/05/2008 09:58

Are you sure a neighbour deliberately let her out?

Seriously, you cannot leave a dog outside all night to bark.

I'm sure she can be housetrained even at 3.

RubySlippers · 25/05/2008 09:59

"the dog does bark but only when she hears noises. although this noise can be just a car and usually is. on a weekend her barking is worse because she can hear people coming home in taxis and drunks walking past.

but if she is barking for more than a couple of minutes at a time i will go and see what she is barking at which stops"

this sounds horrendous to me - if you wait a couple of minutes, your neighbours will all be awake

and worse on weekends ...

cluelessnchaos · 25/05/2008 09:59

well they have sent you the message now, time to look for an alternative.

I'm very glad you're not my neighbour.

WanderingTrolley · 25/05/2008 10:03

I would be lobbing Mickey Finns at a barking dog tbh, but that's after I would have had repeated conversations with the owners and several calls to the RSPCA.

Barking dogs are hugely annoying to most people.

"more acceptable times" - more acceptable to whom?

If the gate wasn't locked, are you sure it was shut properly? Might she have opened it herself or it blown open? I had a very bouncy terrier who could open doors, depends on the door obv.

I think you need to address the problem of the dog that barks at every noise. I feel sorriest for your neighbours, not the dog, tbh.

umberella · 25/05/2008 10:05

house train her and keep her inside!

if your neighbours are that sick of her barking you are taking a risk by leaving her outside overnight imo.

NomDePlume · 25/05/2008 10:06

We used to live across the road from a woman who worked shifts (police officer). She had a dog which she used to shut outside in the back garden when she was working. It used to bark constantly. It drove us freaking mental.

Yes, the person should prob have come to you to complain about the dog, but TBH, they prob assumed that given you can hear the dog barking all the time that you don't really care.

Have you considered that it may not have been someone being vindictive ? It may have been someone coming back from the pub or whatever thinking it would be a funny prank to pull. Someone pulled up all of the young trees in my front garden a few months ago in the early hours of Saturday night and then hid them around the corner on my next door neighbour's drive. I planted the trees back out a couple of days later and they have been fine ever since. It must have just been someone pulling a stupid prank.

misdee · 25/05/2008 10:08

bring her in.

my bneighbours have a dog that barks constantly it drives me nuts. i dont know what to do about it, people have spoken to them about but it still barking late into the night and early in the morning.

i feel like letting the darned thing out or shooting a tranqualiser dart at it.

3andnomore · 25/05/2008 10:08

I think you are being unreasonable to expect your neighbours to put up with your dogs barking in the night.
You should have looked into training your dog a long time ago....!
We have a dog and love dogs, but a dog that barks in the night is just unacceptable.....unless they bark for a real reason, of course, which would be warning off any possible thieves, etc...

NomDePlume · 25/05/2008 10:08

micci - You KNOW your dog barks frequently and needs you to go and see her to "go and see what she is barking at which stops her". So presumably, you know that she has a barking problem, you don't need your neighbours to tell you that ?!
