Feeling wounded by DP's comment about a fitness video I sent him.

Today I achieved a big personal fitness goal I've been working towards for about a year - squatting 1.5x my body weight for five reps.

A woman I train with videoed me doing it. In the video, the gym instructor is stood a step or two behind me, has his hands level with my armpits and is squatting along with me. All very standard practice for spotting someone when they're lifting.

I sent the video to DP.

At the end of the session, the gym instructor gave me a creme egg and was really effusive in his praise. The woman I train with was also full of hearty congratulations. I came away feeling completely pumped and proud.

When I got home, I did a muscle man pose for DP as soon I was through the front door and said "Well, what did you think?" I hoped expected some kind words or congratulations. He knows how hard I've worked for this and has been supportive.

But he just said "Tom's a bit handsy isn't he?"

It completely took the wind out of my sails. I know I'm probably overreacting but I just felt so gutted that's the first thing DP said. No "well done" or "great work", just a comment about the instructor. Even if DP had legitimate concerns about the gym instructor being handsy (which he's not at all), surely he could've saved them until later or tomorrow.

Sorry, I just feel deflated. I'm probably overreacting.

He said ‘a bit handsy’, not ‘a bit shady’. But either way, I can’t see what’s side splittingly funny about it?

Handsy…shady…whatever. It IS funny to me and there’s nothing you can do about it 😁

doodleschnoodle · 01/07/2025 16:04

Good grief, some terribly low standards/bad relationships going on here if people think their own partner shouldn’t be interested in their achievements Confused If this was my partner I would be delighted for them and say so.

Well done, OP! It was very disappointing of your DP not to be supportive and proud of you when you’d achieved something important to you. I’m not surprised it’s taken the wind out of your sails a bit.

I don’t want to do anything about it, I just want to understand the joke!

Why do you feel the need to be celebrated by everyone?
Btw..I think his comment was funny!

I'm guessing you haven't got a partner. If you did, you'd understand.

I know it’s an achievement for you but it isn’t interesting to others.

Well it should be to her partner!

Jojimoji · 01/07/2025 16:06

Well Done You !!!

The gym instructor always has a wholesale box of something chocolate-y and hands them out whenever anyone reaches a goal. The box of creme eggs were bought around March-ish.

I'm not sure why I added the detail about the creme egg to the OP. I did have a reason but I can't remember it now 😂

The crème egg thing did make me laugh. If there is any relevance it shows that he congratulated you with a gift, but in a very generic and minor way that is therefore entirely appropriate for a trainer relationship.

ThisPlumZebra · 01/07/2025 16:07

You’re not overreacting, love. you worked hard and deserved a “well done,” not a jealous comment.

He should have given you a protein bar or carrot sticks! No personal trainer worth their salt will give out junk like crème eggs to their clients! Has his sanity been eroded by this heat? 😅

Was he aware of what he was actually watching?

It is difficult to tell without watching the clip: I think I’d recognise that you were lifting weights but I’m not sure I’d appreciate how heavy the weights were nor how significant that was for you.

I wonder if you would have got a better response from a text verbalising your achievement.

Well done on achieving your goal.

Of course. As I was getting my gym shit together I told him what I was going for. He knows I've been working towards this for ages. When I sent him the video I sent a caption with the weight in it. Couldn't be any clearer 😅

I think @ElCorazon opened the wine a bit early.

Mymanyellow · 01/07/2025 16:09

Well done you. I was dead chuffed with myself the first time I swum a mile. Didn’t film it or send to anyone, but I told everyone and they were pleased for me. I didn’t get a cream egg either now I come to think of it.

GobbledyBook · 01/07/2025 16:09

Well done OP, that's an incredible achievement. I'm not sure the posters being sniffy about it understand how difficult it is to lift that much weight. And of course you'd video it, I bet you looked like superwoman with the big plates stacked on the barbell. Your husband should be your biggest cheerleader and there's definitely a role to play nodding and smiling along encouragingly to a spouse's hobby even if it's not your passion (I say as a woman married to a marathon runner). I find people don't get weightlifting, so go post it in the weights room and get some well-informed praise there.

Catwoman8 · 01/07/2025 16:10

Well done on achieving your goal, I bet you feel amazing! 💪

This is the sort of my comment mine would make too, he thinks he is being funny but its also very annoying 😑

I don’t drink, I have a natural high. 🤗

SamDeanCas · 01/07/2025 16:11

Wow first couple of responses are a bit brutal. I’m with you op, I’d have been gutted at his response too. Sounds a bit jealous tbh that you’ve achieved this and he hasn’t. I hope you have him a telling off

I can understand his position. I had a hobby which DH wasn't comfortable with me doing so I gave it up years ago.

Why? Confused No man will ever EVER give up a hobby for any woman.

Why would you give up something for a man?

@ExplosiveDiorEar OP YANBU your DH is a being bitter, jealous wassock. He is threatened by your male friend, and by you making yourself look good.

How pathetic. Tell him to grow the fuk up!

Sandy420 · 01/07/2025 16:12

I do think it is quite funny when someone completely misses the point ie the first poster and the OP's DH.

I'm with him tbh, this seems quite a random personal goal of yours and if my DH sent me a pic of him lifting weights with a woman's hands round him I'd probably be going 'huh' too. I'm not sure it needed a video tbh, I'd have preferred to just hear about it and say well done.

I do love a creme egg though so well done for that.

ArtTheClown · 01/07/2025 16:12

Come on…try and see the funny side of it! OP walks through the door and her man says ‘Tom’s a bit shady’
Honestly, it cracked me up 😆

I'd love to be that easily amused, life must be hilarious.

MounjaroMounjaro · 01/07/2025 16:12

You did amazingly well, OP, and I don't like your partner. He doesn't deserve you and you deserve someone so much better than him.

InterestedDad37 · 01/07/2025 16:12

Well done @ExplosiveDiorEar ,your partner is expressing insecurity, which may need talking about, depending on the rest of your relationship, but don't let his negativity take away from your achievement 👏👏👏🏋️

First of all op congratulations in that. Fantastic achievement! I’m really impressed.

Secondly, yanbu for thinking your DH’s response was somewhat lacklustre. I assume he doesn’t lift / go to the gym or realise how spotting works. Fwiw my pt has probably touched me more than my DP this year (PT is a woman but ykwim).

That's funny actually because we landed on creme eggs as a good reward because eggs = protein. There was much WhatsApp chat about this 😅
