He's in a separate bedroom. Flithy f**ker not changed his bed for 4 weeks, so this morning I asked him if he was thinking of changing his sheets as he's been in them for 4 weeks.....he doesn't have a clue how long they've been on....If I had not mentioned it, I wonder how long he'd have kept them on.
He's in our son's room and he's coming back end of July so have ordered some nice new bedding for him 😄

After four weeks of not washing your bedding, your bed can accumulate millions of bacteria, including harmful types that can cause infections. Specifically, pillowcases can harbor 39 times more bacteria than a pet bowl and sheets can have 5.4 times more bacteria than a toothbrush holder. One study found as many as 11 million bacterial colonies per square inch on unwashed sheets

Do you know anyone who has become ill as a result of not washing sheets every week?

I can almost guarantee that not washing our bed linen weekly, not washing towels every couple of days, or even wearing the same underwear more than once wouldn't make me ill.

It doesn’t make it any less skanky.

I was responding to someone whose whole point was bacteria.
Bedding and towels don't need more than weekly washing.

True. You did. The point still stands stands though.

What point would that be??
I used to suffer a terrible with acne until I went to see a dermatologist who told me to change my pillowcase at least twice a week within a month my skin was so much better.

What points are you trying to make then? That it’s okay to do something until it makes you ill and then you should stop.

The point that nobody knows anyone who has developed a nasty infection from bedding that’s been on a while.

Let’s be fair it’s not something that someone’s going to openly go around talking about is it? Can you imagine actually telling another person that you were poorly because you don’t change your street enough. There is numerous studies about it so I can’t imagine it’s just fiction.

What a load of hyperbole! 😆 As has been said, no-one ever got ill from only changing their sheets once a fortnight! 😂

No-one's going to go around talking about all the illnesses they have had from sleeping in '12 days since they were washed' bedsheets, because it's never happened! 😆

Humans are covered in bacteria anyway.
I dont get the obsession with wanting to live in a sterile environment.

Exactly! I mean, not washing your sheets for 2-3 months is a bit 😱 as they would be pretty grubby by then, but once every 2 weeks is fine (unless you've been ill or sick, or it's very warm!) We are changing ours weekly at the moment.

Edited

I’m not entirely sure where you’re getting two weeks from or 12 days from when I said four weeks.
but it’s not really something I’m going to keep discussing to be honest. I was just stating some facts About how much bacteria gets on your bedding over the period of four weeks.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 03/07/2025 22:04

It is recommended to wash bedding more frequently than monthly:

Yeah I change mine monthly. When I have been very mentally unwell or overwhelmed then it has been longer than that. I think about 3 months is my record. I just did not care.
I never came to any harm.

Yawn...

In actual fact after four weeks of not washing your bedding absolutely nothing will happen to you. Those of us who don't obsess about these things are generally far more healthy than those who do. Get out and live life instead of researching nonsense like this.

Why must you be so hostile when the person was giving info?

Brokenheartedthx2jay · 04/07/2025 00:01

So why is your ex in your son's room and what will happen at the end of July when he comes back?

I think it depends if you're a "shower in the morning" or "shower in the evening" person. If you shower before bed so that the bedroom is a "clean space", 4 weeks is a bit of a stretch but not horribly gross. If you shower mornings then you're bringing the day's grime to your bed every night, so I'd be changing bedding every week or so.

This post nails it. If all he is doing in bed is lying there sleeping and he is someone who showers before bed each night and wears fresh nightwear regularly to help absorb any sweat - then changing the bedding monthly is maybe not ideal (I’d at least change the pillowcase every week or two especially in hot weather) but not that gross. Shower in the morning type so he is sleeping in that days grime or very “active” in bed 🤣 then yeah imo it needs to be changed weekly.
