DH not changed bedding for 4 weeks

peachescariad · 01/07/2025 12:36

He's in a separate bedroom. Flithy f**ker not changed his bed for 4 weeks, so this morning I asked him if he was thinking of changing his sheets as he's been in them for 4 weeks.....he doesn't have a clue how long they've been on....If I had not mentioned it, I wonder how long he'd have kept them on.
He's in our son's room and he's coming back end of July so have ordered some nice new bedding for him 😄

Urgh.

We change ours weekly and thankfully DH is even more fastidious than I am about making sure it gets done!

I know it's not strictly necessary to change bedding that often but we like it fresh and clean.

You are being ridiculous. We are heading towards a country wide water shortage, not to mention damage to planet with overuse of detergents. I think people who push an agenda to constantly wash things (washing towels every week!) are utterly selfish with the planet’s limited resources. But worse they then start to try and make the rest of us feel ‘unclean’. Ridiculous.

I agree, it’s a question of balance not hysteria.

Oh jeeze, don't get Mumsnet started on washing towels. The 'every use' crowd will come on and send this thread batshit.

We wash bedding every 3 weeks in the winter and 2 weeks in the summer. I say we, but DH does all of the washing (he has the dates in his calender the sad git!).

Dates in his calendar to... wash the bedding?!

Surely you just strip the beds at weekend and chuck them in the wash???

UrbanFan · 01/07/2025 14:57

Frankly it's nothing to do with you OP. If he is happy to wallow in his own stink in another room let him.

Algonqueen · 01/07/2025 14:57

I’d consider every month to be more than reasonable although I change my pillow case every 2-3 days due to night creams etc. Towels, I do weekly and hand towels maybe twice a week. If it was longer I wouldn’t be bothered.

I don’t shower every day either!!! Feels a bit like those obsessed with cleaning their houses; nothing better to do with their lives/time.

I have no set routine for how often bedding is changed. I used to be a strict weekly person but chilled out as I got older.

I don't actually know how long my sheets have been on. Weather is breaking tomorrow so I'll probably change them then. No point just before yet another baking hot night.

Falingoth · 01/07/2025 14:59

We probably wash ours every 3-4 weeks. Honestly can't be arsed doing it more often than that.
If I end up with some hideous skin condition as a result of it I'll find this thread and write a long emotional post about how I wish I'd listened etc.

Except I probably won't, because I'll probably be fine.

Soonenough · 01/07/2025 14:59

Left to his own devices my Ex would never think to change his bed . And think it's funny to say that they were only getting cosy when I wrestled them off him . One of his many disgusting habits . If I was rich and/or had a maid , I'd have mine changed every other day . Ironed too.

hby9628 · 01/07/2025 15:00

Honestly my DH never thinks to change the sheets. God knows how long he would leave it if I didn’t do it (we share a bed). Men are gross.

Cattery · 01/07/2025 15:02

The longest I ever heard of was 6 months. SIX MONTHS! A SAHM

Cosyblankets · 01/07/2025 15:02

london111 · 01/07/2025 14:52

One a month. I am clean when I come out of the shower, dead skin cells having being rubbed off and washed away in the shower.

any comment on the more important point on water usage and the state of the planet? And that there is zero scientific evidence that washing sheets/towels weekly makes one iota of difference to your health?

It depends on whether the towels dry properly. If it's not cold enough for heating on but not warm or airy enough for them to dry properly they stay damp.
Does the same apply to your tea towels? They're drying clean dishes

peachescariad · 01/07/2025 15:02

Thanks everyone for your replies - you gotta love MN for a mixed bag of responses!
Ok will leave skanky man to his own bed stripping schedule 😆(note to self to boil wash bedding when it does materialise....)

A whole month……… in the current heatwave…???

Moveoverdarlin · 01/07/2025 15:03

4 weeks? Meh. I do mine every two weeks, maybe three if I’m particularly busy or feeling lazy. Nothing has happened yet to me, not one person apart from my immediate family has entered the room and sniffed the sheets. So all is good. Four weeks doesn’t disgust me.

I went to wash my teenage boys sheets yesterday, thinking it’s been particularly hot and sweaty and I should do them, it’s been exactly 9 days since I last did them. I gave them a sniff and they still smelt of fabric softener so I didn’t bother.

Lighten up.

How often do you wash your towels?

Almost every day

Makingpeace · 01/07/2025 15:05

Cattery · 01/07/2025 15:03

Almost every day

Almost...? 🤔

Some every day, some twice a day, some every other day?

MaryTheTurtle · 01/07/2025 15:05

Long ago an ex never bothered to change the bedding his spare room, it was filthy my DC had to sleep with a towel on the pillow and one on the sheet, towels I bought from my home. Filthy animal

ScratCat · 01/07/2025 15:06

4 weeks! What an absolute minger. That’s disgusting.

LilacWineIsSweetAndHeady · 01/07/2025 15:06

Bedding should be done weekly IMHO....
We have 2 doubles and a king sized bed and they are all done weekly. My washing machine broke recently so I had to leave the Bedding on for two weeks, I felt rank getting in it at night.

Mintsj · 01/07/2025 15:06

Why did you order new bedding when you can just wash it?

Aside from this, I don't think I could worry about sheets having been on 4 weeks. It's not a problem unless he's getting in there filthy.

I’ve seen plenty of threads (here and elsewhere) where people said they change their towels EVERY DAY, and were horrified that anyone would use a towel for a week. People seem to be much more germ-phobic than they used to be, and much less concerned about wasting water and electricity.

Still not offering an opinion re water shortage and state of the planet then? Or any actual evidence that over washing does anything other than allow some a false position of superiority based on ‘cleanliness’ but no evidence on health.

This thread is so depressing. We are in a heatwave which most evidence suggests is part of planet warming due to human activity from over consumption. Using the amount of water we use for over washing activities is so selfish. I am assuming most on here have children. This is the planet we are gifting them.
