To think we are hugely lucky to have been born in a time and place that is somewhat equal and somewhat free for women

And that women who come after us will decreasingly enjoy this status

Seriously, I'd love to hear arguments that this will extend in time and place

I feel blessed to live in a time where they've decriminalised abortion. This makes it safer for women in the UK to make a hard choice if they need to. This is a huge step for our rights

I only hope America follows suit. They have been going backwards regarding women's choices and options

Echobelly · 25/06/2025 21:27

Yup, our freedom has become too much for powerful yet fragile men, it seems. I hope we can keep battling it in the UK and avoid the awful situation in the US regarding forced birth. I think it helps that we don't have the big 'Jesus will be sad if you KILL YOUR BABY' lobby here, they won't really have a powerful message with a big following, but I can imagine right-wing reactionary parties coming to power and trying to cut or shut down contraception and abortion access because 'Mean, nasty Career Women won't have babies' or something.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 25/06/2025 21:28

Yes - every time I hear about some bs in the US, especially the recent one with the brain dead woman who was 8 weeks pregnant and the baby was kept alive due to the medical staff not being able to do the obvious thing, I thank fck I'm going through peri menopause and single and in the UK for now at least.

MidnightPatrol · 25/06/2025 21:29

Why will women in future not enjoy the same freedoms as women today?

I think that’s an overly negative outlook.

It's not for definite, but there is a lot of reactionary politics about a lot of which will have no hesitation rolling back women's rights. There are a lot of fragile male egos out there who think women's rights have 'gone too far'.

I could easily imagine a Tory or Reform government in the UK, for example, cutting maternity leave 'because it's bad for business'. I think the Tories already may have cut back aid for discrimination cases against employers while they were in power - something I don't think Labour have reversed.

Sonolanona · 25/06/2025 21:42

I don't feel that women have ever had a particularly lucky period in which to exist... misogony is as old as humans it seems...but there are definitely worse times to have been born than the last 50 years. .. we have had contraception and access to abortion when needed and reasonable financial freedom.
Equal though? Not by a long shot. The glass ceiling is still there...plus we are expected to work but still do the wifework, the child care, the life organisation, and be happy about it. Actual equality is a long way off.

What is happening in the USA is horrifying, but as another poster has said, we don't, thankfully seem to have quite the same number of bible bashing lunatics (who are anything BUT Christian!) determined to return women to barefoot and pregnant.
And I am selfishly glad I'm older!

The current US administration is trying so hard to become Gilead and we have a habit/history of following them over cliffs . I'll admit to being chronically online, so I can understand if you aren't seeing what I'm seeing and dreading.

BebeFitterLoco · 25/06/2025 21:43

Yeah. But I am still judged and punished for shit men get away with or are applauded for.
Britain is a fucked up patriarchy.

YANBU, though I don't think anybody should actually feel lucky to have rights. We should expect to. But yes, we are more fortunate than women in some less enlightened societies.

I think your bar is very low.

All the more reason for more and more women to get into politics. I dont think there has ever been so many female politicians and women in parliament and hopefully that trend continues.

ayepecking · 25/06/2025 21:55

I'm scared for my yet to be born granddaughters. I wouldn't have children now as I fear for the rise of Islam and the cult of the penis.

Bushmillsbabe · 25/06/2025 21:56

I'm sure I will be flamed for saying this, but I do worry that the progress we have made will be limited by sections of our society who still hold very regressive views regarding women.

It really hit home to me when I visited a family through work to see an unwell child today. There were 3 women in the home - the child's mum, grandma and Auntie. And several men - uncles and grandad, Dad was at work. None of the women could speak English, all the men could. I directed my conversation towards the mum, and asked a male relative to translate, I asked permission for a medical intervention, the uncle said yes without translating to the mum what I had said, I responded, 'I need a parents consent, please can you interpret what i have just explained' his response was 'I am in charge here, I say you can go ahead'. Despite being the most important person in the room as the only parent present, her views were deemed to be worthless by the males present, and the women had been denied the oppurtuinity to learn English and have some independence.

In the places in the world where the population is growing most swiftly, women have neither legal nor social equality.

I don’t know, I think the justice system really doesn’t give a fuck about rape, girls and women. I do think it’s better than most places in the world however how far the trans rights thing got really opened my eyes to how little society really views the safety and dignity of women. The grooming stuff really exposed how little girls matter. It just reinforces how girls and women are bottom of the pile. F there had been a grooming scandal of boys being raped and trafficked I genuinely think the response would have been more robust.

TomatoSandwiches · 25/06/2025 22:05

I don't think any woman on the earth is lucky, the fact that men are still a serious problem for us in the year of 2025 makes me rage.

Men are a problem.

saltywordsalad · 25/06/2025 22:05

Yay, I'm lucky that I'm discriminated against at work and in my daily life? But it could be worse, is that where we're going here?

Drivingmissrangey · 25/06/2025 22:07

Yeah, totally lucky to be able to have it all (working FT as well as taking on the lions share of responsibility at home).

TheNightingalesStarling · 25/06/2025 22:10

Its far from perfect.
Its better than it used to be.
Its important we don't go backwards. Rights are hard to win but easy to give away.

AlphaApple · 25/06/2025 22:11

The fact that women feel blessed to have rights that men take for granted says it all.

I’m not from that demographic but I had friends who were, brothers regularly beat their sisters and it was ignored. I had a friend escape to my home once (we were kids and this was decades ago, today I would have called social services who probably would have done fuck all about it).

TheSeventh · 25/06/2025 22:12

I am luckier than many women past and present. I hope that we continue to reject religion, all religion, that's the only way I see us reaching full equality.

CatsMagic · 25/06/2025 22:13

We are extraordinarily lucky to live in the UK, there are millions of women on this planet right now who don’t have anything near equality, or freedom, whilst this continues then women will never truly be equal or free.

Burntt · 25/06/2025 22:15

I think it’s dangerous to think we should be grateful. I was raised this way being told we have equality and feminism had won, was now redundant and not proper to follow. Led me to an abusive marriage and multiple shit partners. It’s only now I’m older and see more of the reality that I realise feminism never won. It made progress but that’s being clawed back. If we keep raising our dds to believe they are lucky then there won’t be enough women left to defend our rights once all the dinosaur witches are gone.

BuntyBeaufort · 25/06/2025 22:18

No, because it shouldn’t be “lucky” to be treated as equal human beings by the male of the species, it should be be the norm.
But yes, because after a couple of decades of progress we are again heading down the slippery slope to legally enforced misogyny and Gilead.
