51% of men in favour of having weight filters on dating apps

theres an article in the guardian today following Tinders decision to add in height filters as a premium feature. Quite a few men are upset saying it is going to make dating harder (despite the stats saying many routinely lie about their height anyway).

But what shocked me, was that 51% of men were in favour of a weight filter. Presumably in their heads they all have such great physiques that a weight filter wouldn’t negatively impact their prospects 🤣. But I was genuinely shocked, I really didn’t think the numbers behind weight was a big deal (obviously body type-yes. But not to be able to say she’s over 10stone so that’s a no!)

I suppose they think it's tit for tat kind of thing.
Tinder is a dross app anyway so...

Edinburgha · 22/06/2025 10:38

Seems impractical- just someone’s weight doesn’t tell you much about their shape and size. But other than that it doesn’t bother me at all. It’s certainly no worse than a height filter, if anything it’s better.

ThejoyofNC · 22/06/2025 10:39

In my opinion, people are allowed to have preferences. That goes for both men and women.

I have/will never been online dating but I wouldn't date someone who was seriously overweight so having the option to "filter out" those profiles would be appealing.

Lemmywise · 22/06/2025 10:39

I suppose you could ask why it’s ok for women to filter out height (which you can’t control) yet oppose men wanting to filter out their preference? I don’t understand why one would be better than the other one. A preference is a preference

ThatTealOP · 22/06/2025 10:40

Just be honest and say that you’re mad that this affects you directly.

skippy67 · 22/06/2025 10:40

I don't think there's anything wrong with it? Same as height, race, and age filters surely?

PowerStruggles · 22/06/2025 10:40

I wouldn’t have a problem with that as a filter, I’m a woman by the way.

Boredlass · 22/06/2025 10:41

There’s nothing wrong with it. I wouldn’t date a short man and that’s fine as well

Exactly.

cheesycheesy · 22/06/2025 10:42

Everyone is allowed to have preferences. A romantic partner is one of the only things in life you're still able to make your own mind up regarding shape/size/hair colour etc and this shouldn’t cause offence. The same choices should be for men and women. By filtering lots out some people will get no matches but that’s their choice to make

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 22/06/2025 10:43

Fair enough. People are allowed to decide what they find attractive whether that is height or weight. Or hair colour, eye colour, or anything else

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 22/06/2025 10:44

I think being able to filter on weight is absolutely fine

Finteq · 22/06/2025 10:44

Exactly who wants a short fat man?
They should get what they want.

Let there be a weight filter

dootball · 22/06/2025 10:44

Surprised it's only 51%

Daisyvodka · 22/06/2025 10:46

I dont love the message stuff like this sends, but ultimately if I was overweight, I probably wouldnt want to be wasting my time on dating apps talking to people who wouldn't date me because of my weight? However, I am mainly interested in hearing what women who would fall into these categories think of this!

CommissarySushi · 22/06/2025 10:47

Sounds fine to me. I wouldn't date an overweight man either so I'd probably use it too.

SerendipityJane · 22/06/2025 10:47

The story that 52% of women were in favour of a wealth filter went unprinted 😀

Jinglejanglenamechanged25 · 22/06/2025 10:49

Filtering out these men puts the plus in plus size for me.

Saggyoldclothbody · 22/06/2025 10:50

People will just lie and many people can’t just judge weight accurately anyway. I’ve been severely obese according to my BMI and my DP thought I weighed less than him (in spite of me being 3 stone heavier at the time with a sturdy and muscular frame). I always included a full length picture on my dating profile so men could make their minds up.

WhenYouSayNothingAtAll · 22/06/2025 10:51

Why are you so shocked? It’s not exactly rocket science, and basically the same thing.

AnneLovesGilbert · 22/06/2025 10:52

Only 51%?

Can you explain why you’re so shocked?

nopineapplepizza · 22/06/2025 10:54

There are two main issues I would see with this:

  1. height rarely changes in adulthood, but weight can fluctuate. If someone joins a dating app in month one and by month three is a stone heavier, will they update their app (especially if they’re dieting and expecting to lose the weight again, so not actively looking to mislead anyone)? If people aren’t continually adjusting their weight on the app, they’ll regularly be inaccurate (and that’s if people don’t lie to begin with)
  2. A woman of 5 foot and a woman of 6 foot can be the same dress size, but the 6 foot woman is likely to be heavier; do men recognise that there could be a two or three stone difference between them, especially if the taller woman has more muscle?
OddBoots · 22/06/2025 10:54

I would rather potential dates who would be put off by my size would screen out before actually making contact with me, much better than it happening later.
