To not feel very sorry for woman stuck in Turkey.

I was reading about a woman stuck in Turkey. She was there with her partner who was having teeth implants. So they got drunk and she fell against the glasss shower screen in the hotel. And it smashed. So they did a runner. Police chase. Got caught put in jail. Told they owed £15k or else. Sad face. Hmm. Though it does seem very steep for a shower screen.

She's saying the Turkish mafia chased them from the hotel, so this sounds like drugs were involved. She's not going to admit to doing a runner to avoid paying for some drugs.

No, she's saying the hotel chased her because she did a runner. She has made up the mafia bit for extra dramatic effect.

And they would have tried to kill her if the taxi driver had not saved the day. No one is murdering you over a smashed shower door.

Why are they on prison. Why would the country keep them for six weeks etc?

They're not. She spent one night in jail. Since then she's been living in another hotel, spending the £15k her family raised to pay for the damage on her living expenses instead of handing it over and being free to return to the UK. Stupid is as stupid does.

tammienorrie · 20/06/2025 12:50

Again, she says she was frightened they were going to murder her and that the taxi driver saved her life - there is no evidence for any of this.

What's more likely - hotel staff give chase and there's a bit of shouting and screaming in Turkish which she doesn't understand, or the mafia conduct a very public hit on a no-mark cleaner from Rochdale with witnesses?

Those teeth 😮😂... why do people do this!

At least you'll be able to see them in the dark.

You lost me at ‘celebrating his veneers’ and tried to run away on ‘a day trip to Greece’

Coming soon to a branch of Clinton Cards near you, congratulations on:

Your new baby.
Passing your exams/driving test.
Getting a new job/home.
Turning your mouth into a human version of Shergar's.

For some reason I live somewhere that seems to have a disproportionate amount of power cuts and I'm often rummaging for candles in the dark. This would be bloody brilliant, one could just stand in the corner of the room and smile like a human lampshade.

JMSA · 20/06/2025 13:18

It’s just embarrassing. No sympathy here either.

Classic chavs abroad really.

Having recently been on a pre 7am plane that had to be met by police at its destination due to the disruptive drunken antics of a large party on-board I think you've nailed it

Thanks @Shenmen Most people are treating this as simply a story of a foolish and irresponsible woman who has caused a lot of damage and got what she deserved. Maybe that's a fair view but, given we only have the reports of the Daily M and Manchester Eve News to go by (🙄), the headline in another paper could have been 'woman with serious mental health problem denied access to medication in Turkey after psychotic episode'. We've no idea which version is more accurate or whether it's a bit of both. Several posters are referring to 'drugs' but I can't see any mention of recreational drugs. Anti-psychotics are only given to people who are seriously mentally unwell and who may have impaired decision making. According to the stories, her partner's role in all this seems to be just to have teeth. Clearly there's more to this than a typical DM /MEN spin.

No a lot of what people are saying has come from her own words on her go fund me page. She is the one who is giving out the information, not about taking drugs, dunno where that has come from, but smashing the place up and doing a runner and then not paying the money and the stuff about the supposed mafia and the rest, it’s all her words.

PLEASE don’t start up with the Madeleine thing again! It was 20 years ago and we’ve all had enough, except you, clearly!

I haven't had enough either. It won't ever be over till they can bring her home and give her a proper funeral.

I really wish in UK we could have a very active No Fly List - to absolutely refuse flights out of UK for people who have behaved like this. One incident - and you go on the list, that’s it.

Sorry, but have had a good number of depressing first hand experiences, been impacted myself and watched others adversely affected by Brits behaving shockingly like this and specifically in Turkey.

Been on an aircraft where the Captain has refused to take off with some Brits until they are offloaded, Brits threatening the aircraft will “go down”, Brits being physically removed from hotels, Turkish staff in high-end hotels looking on in astonishment at situations they say they have never seen before and so on and so on

Turkey should ban people like these from re-entering.

sonjadog · 20/06/2025 13:46

If she had just paid the money that she has given by her family to cover the damage, she could have been home again weeks ago. Instead she has spent it on staying there, and now has to raise it again... Except that she doesn't really need to raise the whole amount, just enough to make up what she has spent already. Instead she needs 24k, apparently. It is such an obvious money making scheme...

OchonAgusOchonOh · 20/06/2025 13:51

I'm going against the grain here and saying I do feel sorry for her.

She's obviously not the brightest and seems to be easily influenced. She had the money to pay but listened to the lawyer rather than trying to get additional advise on the best thing to do. She then squandered that money on flights/boats she should have known she would not get on.

She also has serious mental health problems that would not help her make good decisions.

Is she an idiot? Yes.
Was she irresponsible? Yes.
Do I believe the only damage was a broken screen door? No.
Do I believe her story about mafia etc? No.

However, it sounds like she ended up in the situation she is in due to a series of bad decisions on her part that were made in a panic, compounded by lack of intelligence or general cop-on and aggravated by her mental health problems.

Where did you see she's looking for 24k? I missed that.

WhatsitWiggle · 20/06/2025 13:59

It wasn't a simple shower screen. The hotel bathrooms have glass screens instead of a wall between them and the bedroom part, they usually have built in blinds or a system to change them to frosted for privacy. Either way, we're not talking a few hundred quid B&Q style screen! Goodness knows what she threw at it to break it.

grumpygrape · 20/06/2025 14:01

When I've booked with Brittany Ferries or Eurotunnel I've been asked if I have travel insurance and with which company. Obviously they want to sell insurance but I think they might be obliged to ask. Perhaps if we made it mandatory to have travel insurance, some, although not all, of these daft problems may not get so out of hand

She's not "correcting" me - she's got it wrong.

You're wrong. The Ocean Club's restaurant they were eating at was on the opposite side of the pool from the McCann's apartment, 55 meters (180 ft) away, within their sight-line, and the adults took it in turns to check up on the children. Just because the apartment was within their sight-line doesn't mean they would have seen Maddy being abducted - there were windows on both sides of the apartment. Like the majority of people on holiday, they were relaxed and just couldn't conceive of such a terrible thing happening - just as you can't conceive of something terrible happening to your children when you go to the corner shop, but it could, yet you still do it. So, FWIW, I don't think you're a bad parent any more than I think the McCann's are and at no point have I said that "rich couples are somehow better" than you (or anyone else). If other people IRL call you a bad mum you should have it out with them and not project your insecurities onto me.

I don't normally comment on this subject, but to be fair, the McCann's apartment was only 55 metres away as the crow flies. It was 82 metres on foot. Also, the apartment block was in line of sight, but not their specific apartment, and certainly not the children's bedrooms, which were around the back of the apartment, so completely out of sight.
