To not feel very sorry for woman stuck in Turkey.

I was reading about a woman stuck in Turkey. She was there with her partner who was having teeth implants. So they got drunk and she fell against the glasss shower screen in the hotel. And it smashed. So they did a runner. Police chase. Got caught put in jail. Told they owed £15k or else. Sad face. Hmm. Though it does seem very steep for a shower screen.

On this pic, she looks like Katie Price! (Now, not when she was younger!)

Yeah, and if you read the GFM she already has the £15K just refuses to pay it so instead is spending it on hotels. She could already be home.

updated to say @kkloo I think I’ve just said what you said. You have a good point, what’s the GFM for? For them to live off in Turkey when they could be home?

What happens when their visa expires

I think people are making assumptions about the tattoo. It doesn't mention it in the DM or GFM page.

The GFM page does have a picture of a notebook with the writing in it, and a fresh looking tattoo of the same, so it implies that it's been done recently.

That’s the funniest thing I’ve read in ages. She gave the lawyer “power of attorney” because she hasn’t the mental capacity to make decisions herself?!
They are both ridiculous and created the whole situation themselves and now expect others to bail them out of it. She’s tried a few times to leave but been stopped at passport control. Really? She’s an idiot, Turkey can keep them. It’s the daughter I feel for but she’d be better off with a responsible adult.

If she really doesn't have capacity, it sounds like the lawyer is taking advantage of the situation tbh

Unbelievably harsh and prejudiced comments as are many on this thread.
She doesn't deserve to be in jail and to be in jail in a foreign country must be a nightmare.
Hope she is able to come back soon

She isn't in jail! Bloody hell, so much hyperbole. If she'd done the same in the UK she would also have spent a night in the cells before being bailed. It's not exactly Midnight Express.

I'll bow to your expertise. I haven't a clue what a fresh vs older tattoo looks like😁

To me, it seems like she's not the most intelligent of individuals, to have poor impulse control and not the best at differentiating between good and bad advice. While she brought it on herself through a series of bad, and then worse, decisions, I do feel a certain amount of sympathy for her.

Pedallleur · 20/06/2025 21:11

No sympathy here. Just more fwits who believe they can do anything and somehow it isn't their fault and someone will help them. I won't. They can stay there and admire their teeth whilst posting on sm

She’s not in prison

Of course they are not in the right, but why is their plight of any interest to you?

My goodness. That's an impressive amount of vitriol, snobbery and racism in one relatively short post.

GiveMeSpanakopita · 20/06/2025 10:25

I do feel sorry for her because a shower door doesn't cost £15k to replace and Turkish police are notoriously brutal.

More generally I'm fascinated by the fact that sympathy for Brits in trouble abroad seems broadly to delineate itself along lines of class loyalty/snobbery rather than an honest appraisal of the facts.

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe went to a country which the UK Govt advises not to go to, spread propaganda according to the laws of that country, but middle class so it's jolly awful and there's a big outcry.

Kate & gerry McCann neglect their infant children in favour of a night drinking and lose one, but doctors, so therefore it's all so awful and let's throw the full weight of the Met behind them.

Woman goes to Turkey for dental work, neglecting neither her children nor insisting on going to a known dangerous country, is cruelly treated by the police and held hostage in that country, but she's working class, so, ha ha ha ha and she deserves it.

I'm going to stop reading at this post cos it's the only one with half a clue, the rest is just snobby bullshit.

I feel sorry for her child. The only victim here.

Why do you assume they're chavs (which is an acronym meaning council house and violent, apparently - sounds USian to me)? They got drunk. People do. For all we know they are professional people and she is on MN reading this lot.
How one falls against a shower screen I know not, but the obviousl thing is to immediately report it, not run away.
I don't feel sorry for idiots but 15k sounds like a scam. How much to shower screens cost, even in Turkey?

Edited

Chav is a much older word than that recent acronym

Pingu32 · 20/06/2025 22:07

My guess is she bit the shower screen with her Turkey Teeth - hell slap it up her !

To be fair, the same couple likely chance their arm at home, so doing it elsewhere is normal to them. Glad they haven't got away with it, as they likely would have done here. Gofundme 'cos they're used to legal aid, which isn't available! Shows how crap systems are in UK

Legal Aid I believe isn't readily available

@SalfordQuays The use of the word chav is unpleasant and in my view discriminatory. Read ‘Chav - The Demonisation of the Working Class’…. these two people are not representative of any particular group. They made a stupid mistake. That’s all.

I'm going to guess you don't live on a council estate. It's very easy to insist there's no such thing as a chav when you don't have to live amongst them. Middle class bubble anyone ?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 20/06/2025 22:29

Soal · 20/06/2025 09:42

Of course I feel sorry for her, she's in fucking jail, it's not as funny as you think it is.

But she's stupid and common and drunk, she deserves it right, hahahahaha.

Well... yes! While it's not 'funny', people should not be excused from the law because they don't pay it any mind. Ignorance is no excuse...

Unfortunately, it's more available than it should be, and, hugely, taken advantage of

How old? Seventeenth century? I can't remember either Shakespeare or Chaucer using it? And in any case it means that someone is 'common', what the 18th century called 'vulgar'. Not nice.
Mind, woman in question was stupid.

I saw the family talking about it on tiktok, they said they are having to look after her kid, it's the first time she's been abroad since becoming a mum and they got bit drunk and did a few bits of damage to the room, and then got scared and ran away, the said the mafia was chasing them and extorting money from them.

They painted a picture of a poor young mum not being able to handle a drink and accidently damaged a couple of things and ran away out of fear. I don't believe a word of it.
