It's gone 10pm and the neighbours are still making noise in the garden

My alarm goes off for a 12 hour shift in 7 hours. It's Thursday night. Why are some people so unbelievably inconsiderate.

OP posts:

A vibrating alarm wouldn't wake me, I'm exhausted after an already 40 hour working week.

🤣🤣🤣
how do you think people who are hard of hearing or deaf get woken up in the mornings??

MargotTenenbaumscoat · 19/06/2025 22:38

I also get up at 5. I’m up late tonight as I have some time off but usually in bed hours ago.

I don’t expect others to stick to my schedule although I did move to a very isolated location in order to avoid people! Highly recommended. I don’t expect people in my household to stop everything because I have work in the morning so wouldn’t expect my neighbours to either.

If you can’t hear your alarm through earplugs then you either need a louder alarm or you have amazing earplugs! What make are they?

MarySueSaidBoo · 19/06/2025 22:39

Our neighbours have only just taken their extremely tired and grumpy toddler indoors. He needed to be in bed about 5 hours ago by the sound of it, but given how hot our house is upstairs, I've just put some ear plugs in and tried to distract myself with Alexa and a whirling noisy fan on full blast. could still hear the little fucker though.

endingintiers · 19/06/2025 22:40

Can recommenda smartwatch with alarm (as well as separate alarm). You’ll feel it so both together will definitely wake you up.

Teenybub · 19/06/2025 22:41

The 5 year old next door is still screaming on his trampoline. It annoys me during the day but I can just about tolerate it but it’s driving me mad now. His parents are encouraging it by using a water gun on him to cause the screams, where is the common sense?!? There’s probably 7 houses in close proximity with bedrooms at the back that are impacted

ssd · 19/06/2025 22:41

Thats rubbish @Donaldduck22 , i feel for you. I hope you get a sleep. If it was me id be so annoyed i wouldn't sleep even when they eventually shut up.

Shesellsseashellsnotinmystreet · 19/06/2025 22:43

We've just had tea in the garden. Are you my ndn?

Screamingabdabz · 19/06/2025 22:44

It’s the hottest day of the year and it’s not other people’s fault you get up at the crack of dawn. I’m normally a peace and quiet advocate myself but come on, it’s an unusually Mediterranean evening. You can’t blame people for wanting to make the most of it!

NetZeroZealot · 19/06/2025 22:45

I wish I could get earplugs that are effective enough to block the alarm

Fundayout2025 · 19/06/2025 22:46

AffIt · 19/06/2025 22:15

Jesus christ, what is WRONG with you people?

The OP is right, Thursday is a working day for the vast majority of people and an expectation to have shut the fuck up by 10pm is entirely within the bounds of normal behaviour. That's just common decency.

Seriously, the amount of people on here who'd start a fight in an empty room...

It's not actually. According to a yougov study a few years ago it's about 39% so actually a minority. I've just got in from work now

Crepey · 19/06/2025 22:47

@Teenybub this is what I meant earlier when I said people go nuts. Are they fucking stupid, our ex neighbours were like this, entitled stupid twats, hope the kid voms all over them from over excitement.

notacooldad · 19/06/2025 22:50

So you've already done 40 hrs and have another 12 to do.
No wonder your grumpy!.

Judiezones · 19/06/2025 22:53

Donaldduck22 · 19/06/2025 22:07

No I can't use earplugs or I wouldn't hear my 5am alarm

OP try Alpine sleepsoft earplugs, I am a heavy sleeper and I can hear my alarm with these. They are the best I've found.

BatchCookBabe · 19/06/2025 22:53

YANBU @Donaldduck22 and I can't believe you're getting such a hard time on here. Really, people should start to STFU after 9pm, and quieten down... And they shouldn't start any noise til 8am. The 11pm to 7am thing needs changing to no noise between 9pm and 8am. Obviously, normal household sounds yes, but no loud music, loud voices, loud TV, and stupid 'inconsiderate ass' noise. And no bloody rowdy behaviour in the garden this late at night!

Not sure what to suggest though sorry.

Squishysquash · 19/06/2025 22:54

Oh @Donaldduck22 I feel your pain to an extent. Not got to be up as early as you tomorrow but kids in bed, and this weather tends to bring out the drunk karaoke wankers with no consideration for any living thing. My local ones have been wailing in the garden since 17.30 and it's just got worse and worse. No advice, just solidarity. To address a constant theme, no you don't have to be in bed by now, but it would be nice to not keep everyone in a 500m radius awake too. Eg go inside, don't screech.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 19/06/2025 22:54

I would try a vibrating alarm clock - I’ve got one and it’s very effective.

sharkshit · 19/06/2025 22:57

We have loud neighbours who are up making noise at all hours. My husband does shift work too and it was a source of real pain.
What we found that works is a sound machine to play white noise, it drowns out any outside noise and we both sleep a lot better. Takes a little getting used to but it really helps; I would urge you to give it a go.

So you're saying around 60% of people in this so called 'study' had work hours that meant they didn't get in from work til 11pm? 🙄 I don't know a single person who comes in from work that late. I am sure there are some people who do, but it is not 'the majority.'

How many took part in this 'study?' About 500 people I reckon.

SameDayNewName · 19/06/2025 23:03

How much noise are we talking about? Two people chatting, or a party of 50, complete with speakers??

It is the solstice tonight, so people might be celebrating that 🌞

Sounds like a bigger problem you have OP, is being overworked. Although inconsiderate neighbours are the worst x

No it's 39 % if people who work mon-fri daytiines.

So you never go to supermarkets, petrol garages, restaurants, hospitals etc? All of them have people not doing the money/Fri 9-5 scenerio. So EVERY member of your friends and family just do office hours

Livelovebehappy · 19/06/2025 23:05

DontTouchRoach · 19/06/2025 22:08

That doesn’t mean they’re in bed at 10pm. I work every day too but I don’t think I’ve been in bed at 10pm since about 1989.

You might not be in bed at 10, but are you out in the garden making noise? We have children living on our road. Windows are open because of the warm weather, and so yes I would say it’s inconsiderate on a week night to be outside in the garden being noisy. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Not too difficult to just have some consideration for others….

Crinkle77 · 19/06/2025 23:06

cheapshoes · 19/06/2025 22:11

I use earplugs regularly and always hear my alarm still.

Yep me too. They dont block everything out completely. They just dull noise enough to allow you to drop off and are quite effective at dulling noise outside but can still hear my alarm.

LiveLoveLaughQueef · 19/06/2025 23:08

You could try these sleep headphones that are designed to be slept in and set an alarm? Maybe listen to some ambient noise like waves or rain noise?

I use loop sleep ear plugs and they block out a lot of noise. I can still hear my alarm but I sometimes turn it off in my sleep, I set the alarm on my Apple Watch which always vibrates and wakes me.

My issue isn’t with neighbours though, believe it or not it’s cows! We have lots of flocks of cows in the field behind my bedroom and they are surprisingly noisy. The sound of the birds in the early hours is also loud enough to wake me and DP, nature can be as annoying as neighbours sometimes 😂.

I couldn’t bear the sound of other inconsiderate people so followed all advice to just go and live in the middle of fields. Now I get owls hooting loudly, buzzards shrieking, cows mooing and various other nocturnal creatures making a racket. I still prefer to hear the owls being loud outside my bedroom window thanSleep headphones. kids on trampolines or pressure washers though.

Heres the link Amazon earphones

usedtobeaylis · 19/06/2025 23:10

It really depends what the noise is. If it's music etc I'd expect them to start winding it down around 10pm. If they're just making everyday noise in their garden then it's reasonable. If it's my neighbours dogs barking endlessly it's murder.

Livelovebehappy · 19/06/2025 23:11

BrendaSmall · 19/06/2025 22:37

🤣🤣🤣
how do you think people who are hard of hearing or deaf get woken up in the mornings??

Don’t be silly…. A lot of people need an actual alarm, ie, one which makes noise. People who are hard of hearing obviously have no choice other than to have a vibrating one, but most of us who can hear prefer one that’s noisy.
