It's gone 10pm and the neighbours are still making noise in the garden

My alarm goes off for a 12 hour shift in 7 hours. It's Thursday night. Why are some people so unbelievably inconsiderate.

Why only weeknights though? What about consideration for those getting up early on weekend mornings

Yeh good point.

I suppose weeknights I am thinking for school too, but yeh no matter the day or time I think it would be nice to think of others too.

I agree weekend mornings I am usually up early just like during the week. Not everyone lives for getting pished at the weekend!

I see your username isn’t a mantra you live by.

From the comments here it seems everyone should just please themselves and stuff anyone else. So if that’s the case, no one should mind me making noise in my garden when I’m up just after 4am or getting on with my gardening at 6 when it’s light outside and the birds are still singing. They should just suck it up because that’s my routine and the world doesn’t revolve around them. Good to know!

Considering OP stopped replying at 22.18 I think we can assume she nodded off peacefully with no problems

Or she begrudgingly took the advice on this thread to put in some earplugs and has slept through her alarm 🤣

If OP wasn't on MN at 10.18pm she could have gone asleep earlier🤪

You are lawfully permitted to make noise between 7am and 11pm. So no, your examples would not work.

But that's why there is the law to manage this

Most people work weekdays and most people get up well before 8am for work. For the majority then a weekday outdoor party that goes on late is disturbing. I'm talking lots of people, lots of raised voices, maybe some music and past 11pm.
And these aren't my neighbours - they're three houses down and disturbing multiple households.

In the hot weather people are doing outside what they would usually do indoors which would disturb fewer people. Of course it's reasonable to be fed up.

AllyDally · 20/06/2025 14:35

I dont think your comment about people having different needs is valid TBH. What about people on night shifts, should no one use their gardens between 8am and 3pm just in case night shift workers are sleeping? Why is their need for sleep less important than yours. Also some people work Sat/Sun like my husband who has to be up at 430am at weekends, we wouldn't worry if people were in their gardens till 11pm really or later if one off party.

I have to work late in the evenings, often working over 12 hrs. I would consider that being in the garden till 10pm is fine, probably 11pm. Obviously I would not be having wildly parties etc!

39% of people work only weekdays so not most

Obviously I wouldn’t do it because I’m not an inconsiderate asshole, but given the comments here no one would have a right to complain. After all, aren’t we supposed to just put ear plugs in and let everyone else go about their business as they see fit? We are all entitled to enjoy our own gardens

Enjoying your garden isn't being inconsiderate unless you are making excessive noise

And between 11pm and 7am they would have every right to complain.

We’ve no idea how much noise was being made in the garden, a quiet chat or a full scale party.

A quiet chat outside at 10 is NBU.

Donaldduck22 · 19/06/2025 22:14

I struggle to get to settle and sleep with noise, once I'm asleep, due to being so exhausted, I can't hear an alarm through earplugs. I don't think that's unusual.

Have you tried some white/brown noise? I play it via Spotify and it can drown out a LOT of noise. It also means that when your alarm goes off Spotify will stop, so no missing your alarm! It's been life changing for me.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 21/06/2025 18:02

CantStopMoving · 20/06/2025 08:50

i don’t think that is fair assessment at all. I wouldn’t blast loud music to annoy my neighbours. I wouldn’t mow the lawn at 5am in the morning. I don’t know anyone around me who would.

but I would want to enjoy my garden between the hours of 8am and 11pm as I am allowed. I am sympathetic to people who do awkward hours but I have worked hard to have a garden and in this weather I want to enjoy it. That enjoyment involves talking, kids running about, footballs being kicked etc. yes I wouldn’t be making loud noise after 9pm as I would be conscious people are going to bed but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t sit outside with the family enjoying their company. I think it is inconsiderate of the neighbours to insist I am not allowed that.

Who is insisting that you don't? I definitely didn't say everyone should be tucked up in bed, silent, from 10 pm. And it wasn't directed at you, unless you are the person who lives in my quiet village who thinks all our lives are improved by being treated to their musical taste at full volume, day and night. Which is annoying and intrusive at all times. I was merely observing how selfish and entitled people have become. I'm sure you are a paragon of neighbourly virtue.

Not if the noise isn’t considered excessive they wouldn’t. And OP hasn’t elaborated on what the noise actually was.

SpidersAreShitheads · 21/06/2025 19:09

On a separate but related subject, I was reviewing the guidelines today for claiming child DLA. Specifically the different between middle rate and high-rate care.

Night-time is apparently considered the time the household goes to bed (not when the child goes to bed). Apparently DWP will assume this is 11pm.

That backs up what the majority of posters are saying on here - that 10pm is still reasonably early for bedtime, to the point that DWP still classes it as “daytime” 😂

Hulabalu · 21/06/2025 21:03

I think the key is just not to be a f*cking chav and make excessive noise in your garden , and especially not when majority of ppl are going to bed.
