It's gone 10pm and the neighbours are still making noise in the garden

My alarm goes off for a 12 hour shift in 7 hours. It's Thursday night. Why are some people so unbelievably inconsiderate.

Councils/police are only interested if noise occurs between 11pm and 7am.

Good to know, once it's 11pm I'll file a council complaint.

Jesus christ, what is WRONG with you people?

The OP is right, Thursday is a working day for the vast majority of people and an expectation to have shut the fuck up by 10pm is entirely within the bounds of normal behaviour. That's just common decency.

Seriously, the amount of people on here who'd start a fight in an empty room...

Justchillinhere · 19/06/2025 22:15

Bluetooth headband, set your echo/phone whatever one has the alarm, for 2 hours music or however long you like, your alarm will go off through them in the morning

Donaldduck22 · 19/06/2025 22:10

If your alarm also goes off at 5am and you can manage in 5 or 6 hours of sleep and then do a 12 hour shift on your feet then I'm impressed.

I do a night shift with very little sleep.

Kittybelle123 · 19/06/2025 22:17

I’m with you OP. Same situation here. Truly hope they quieten down by 11pm. Sadly my neighbours have form and are unapproachable, so I won’t be holding my breath. I’ve tried ear plugs; I’ve yet to find some that are comfortable and in a strange way, they just highlight the situation in my mind and make me more agitated, some just have to sit it out. Good luck and solidarity OP!

Perhaps those who are pointing out the legal position aren't starting a fight in an empty room but pointing out the legal position so that OP is aware of it.

Subbyhubby · 19/06/2025 22:17

do you know if next door is a SAHM? Sometimes it’s hard for people who don’t routinely leave the house to do their work to appreciate how the other half manage with regards to sleep ect.
im with you OP, A lot of people where I work seem to treat Thursday like (and this a quote from them) “the new Friday”. What on earth is new about it? Thursday has been around for donkeys years, and if you treat it as a Friday you STILL have to go to work on Friday. Fridays day of work doesn’t just disappear. It really winds me up when people come in hungover on a Friday. Just get drunk on a Friday or even not at all, and just enjoy alcohol without having to leave the Friday meeting to vomit in the loo.

Mine have just started cutting their hedge with electric trimmers

I do a night shift with very little sleep.

Different people with different health conditions need different amounts of sleep. I know what I need to be able to function and do my job properly.

I wouldn't if you're a homeowner and eill ever want to sell

OnTheBoardwalk · 19/06/2025 22:19

Is it a one off?

are they trying to get something finished or does it happen all the time?

ThePoshUns · 19/06/2025 22:19

What are they doing? I have only just come in from my garden, husband and I sat talking.
i used to work shifts and as annoying as it is you can’t expect the world to stop for you.

Unfortunately for the council to take note I suspect it will need to be a pattern of occurrences over a period of time. If excessively loud after 11pm the police is the best better of getting an instant resolution if they have anyone available.

Donaldduck22 · 19/06/2025 22:09

A vibrating alarm wouldn't wake me, I'm exhausted after an already 40 hour working week.

If you can hear your neighbours in the garden to the extent its preventing you sleeping, surely you are sensitive enough to noise that a vibrating alarm right under your head would wake you up?

Spirallingdownwards · 19/06/2025 22:21

Donaldduck22 · 19/06/2025 22:18

Different people with different health conditions need different amounts of sleep. I know what I need to be able to function and do my job properly.

There are people however who do night shifts and have to sleep during the day. They aren't able to do anything about normal daytime noise either. The laws are written so as to apply to the majority of people rather than a minority.

SherlockHolmes · 19/06/2025 22:22

10 is hardly late. If you have to be up so early then you need to realise that you're the one out of step with the majority and will have to organise yourself accordingly.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 19/06/2025 22:25

What kind of noise? And do they know you have an early start?

i do think you’re overreacting tbh

ArtfulPinkBird · 19/06/2025 22:26

Completely agree with you OP, this would drive me insane too on a weeknight but probably after 11 rather than 10. I'd imagine with them being your neighbour too they'll know you do shift work. You must be knackered. Hope you get some rest and fingers crossed they've gone indoors by 11.

froglet99 · 19/06/2025 22:27

Yeah you’re definitely not being unreasonable op. And I’m surprised at these responses given that MN is generally the most entitled place on earth and nobody should ever be bothered by anyone else ever! It’s almost like people enjoy being contrary just for the sake of it.

But yes 10pm is too late to be disturbing other people. Nice weather or not, some of us have to be up for work.

ninjahamster · 19/06/2025 22:27

I think if they’re just having a quiet conversation then that’s acceptable but if they’re playing music or being raucous it is very inconsiderate.

DissDissOrDiss · 19/06/2025 22:29

Also came on to ask ‘what kind of noise?’.

Chatting a few drinks, music on low - not a bother at 10pm

Shit faced, screeching and singing - I’d be inclined to ask them to turn it down a notch.

NC28 · 19/06/2025 22:31

Do your neighbours work?

fruitbrewhaha · 19/06/2025 22:34

Just ask them. If I was making noise in my
garden and someone asked me to quieten down at 10pm I would. I’d move inside or just finish up the evening and head to bed myself. It’s not a big ask.

Eldermileniummam · 19/06/2025 22:35

OP I get you want to sleep but can you just close the window? How much noise are they making? If it's just normal socialising and they don't do it often I'd just let it go. Put some headphones in and you'll still hear your alarm.
