Showing support for terrorism is illegal so why do people do it?

Nowayyousure · 19/06/2025 11:36

Well we all know it's illegal, don't we?

It happens though. The flags, the signs, the slogans, the chants, what is said etc.

Kneecap was charged on supporting terrorism. I understand that the charges relate to things like waving the Hezbollah flag and shouting in support of terrorist organisations.

He has been bailed pending trial.

Kneecap's Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, aka Mo Chara, is accused of displaying a flag in support of proscribed organisation Hezbollah.

Why do they do it? Well, presumably either because they don't think they'll be caught or arrested or because their feelings about the cause are strong enough to outweigh their concern about being arrested. Or both those reasons.

Well it's much better than before the GF agreement. Progress has been made.

How would you know? You didn’t even know about loyalists burning pictures of nationalist politicians every July…

ExtraOnions · 19/06/2025 13:38

The Suffragetes, at the time were labelled as terrorists … but now we celebrate them

I'm not sure it is that clear.

Maybe some jump on a bandwagon. Maybe some don't really think it through and what they are actually supporting. If an actual terrorist attack happened to their friends they'd probably change their view pretty quickly.

Obviously, some will know and they won't care who dies because their freedom fighters are fighting for a cause they believe in.

Maybe other reasons - appear to be anti state. Just sing along or chant along with the mass they are near.

Burning pictures is a lot better than bombing, shooting or killing. Surely you realise that?

Would you think saying "Kill your MP" is ok? is that part of what a freedom fighter does? Do we really want that type of violence here?

Why do you consider violence only acceptable if it's government sanctioned (and against brown foreign people)?

I must now assume that this thread is a wind-up, nobody can be so haplessly naive.

The name “kneecap” might give you a better idea of what actually goes on.

OvergrownHaha · 19/06/2025 13:36

I’m asking if you’re young because you seem completely under-informed about the social and political environment Kneecap are from. And the fact that the GFA only happened because people negotiated with terrorists.

I know where they are from.

Negotiations and the GF agreement saved many lives over the years. Therefore, why promote acts of terror rather than negotiation and peaceful protest?

Kneecap Jesus wept, those clowns shouting "up Hamas, Up Hezbollah" at a gig knowing Hezbollah killed one of our peacekeepers in Leb & injuring another a couple of years ago.. so yup let's be billy big balls onstage & incite bullshit, that one who's up on charges totlly needs a sentence, luckily a good few promoters have cancelled their bookings

And she thinks that sectarian marches and paramilitary flag-waving only occurs in NI.

Totally clueless.

You don't tend to get people shouting support for Bloody Sunday at concerts. Thankfully the Good Friday agreement brought peace to Northern Ireland.

Literally riots within the last few weeks but ok then

Duh. Of course it is. But you didn’t even know about that and claimed the Good Friday agreement “brought peace” to Northern Ireland. I’m pointing out that you are clearly not qualified to make any pronouncement at all on what it’s like in Northern Ireland, given that you didn’t even know about the bonfires and what the loyalists get up to. And obviously, there are still sectarian killings.

“One man’s freedom fighter is another man’s terrorist”

Bollocks!!

Terrorists hold extremist views and want to cause problems and they don’t give a shit if innocent people are killed. In fact, they ACTIVELY pursue killing civilians! What happened in Manchester was purposeful and aimed at kids having a good time. Same thing happens in Israel, teenagers have fun at a social event then a terrorist attack happened. Same thing happened in NY, it was innocent people.

They hate the west and everything it stands for, because it contradicts their medieval backwards ideological beliefs. Women are treated like animals with zero rights in the majority of these countries.

Butchyrestingface · 19/06/2025 13:41

Because he was arrested and charged for promoting terrorism. It's current. People tend to start threads about current things. You don't have to participate if you don't want to.

I find it incredibly sad that people who live in relative freedom would want to encourage others to commit terrorism. If we all did that then what a society we would live in. Careful what you wish for et al.

Burning pictures could also be considered to promote terrorism, and as you yourself said it’s a lot better than bombing or shooting people.

This is such a bizarre thread. I agree with PP that you just seem to want to argue and preach at people.

The thread wasn't actually about Northern Ireland per se. It was about a court case about a rapper showing support for terrorism. It is exploring the question of why people support terrorists (particularly in a free country). Could be a range of reasons and maybe some don't even consider the question very deeply and just bandwagon jump with slogans etc. Could say the same about the far right arrests for encouraging people to 'burn hotels with migrants down'. Why do that. Perhaps a bit thick and cannot think through to consequences, hence a number of those arrested 'didn't mean what they suggested' just said it. Maybe that is why some just follow along .....
