To say that most heavy duty physical labour is done by men? When was the last time a female plumber, builder, roofer, painter and decorator, drain unblocker, or boiler or washing machine engineer came to your house?

My threads are very popular so far. Plenty of debate and discussion.

That’s a pretty deluded interpretation of people telling you what they think of your ‘arguments’.

queenmeadhbh · 18/06/2025 20:40

Why have you started going on about Labour? You know this is Mumsnet, not a Labour supporters forum? A lot here don’t vote Labour. (I don’t but I’m not in England anyway)

Excellent. In my case never seen a single female.

Get out more?

No I can't. I have arthritis.. anyway let's go back to hating on men 🤪

No one is hating on men - you appear to be hating on women.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 20/06/2025 16:49

Do you think marginating white working class men who are grafting in hard manual labour and calling them "toxic" is the right direction for society? I still have yet to see any hard statistical facts that it's 50/50 split for male and female labour in this field. My comments about Labour and the Democrats is that they have long abandoned blue collar workers and probably regard them as "gammon" or "deplorables."

Nobody said it was a 50/50 split. We just pointed out that women actually do this work. And that the reason more women don't is that men gatekeep these jobs by behaving appallingly when women come in to them, probably because they're terrified of the competition.

Your comment about Labour and the Lib Dems is opinion and nothing more, and you know what they say about opinions.

Also the word you are looking for is 'marginalising'.

DonnaBanana · 20/06/2025 17:15

I don’t think this is an “inequality” I want fixing. Do I want men providing care at nurseries or old peoples home? No I do not. Equality of opportunity is enough

I have a relative in their 90s with dementia in a care home. She loves the young men who help care for her. You might not want it but others do.

The reason women dont do these jobs is that men behave appallingly. Evidence? Why not say that the middle class feminists simply dont want to do hard labour and look down on anyone who does. As someone from the working classes, I started out adult life working in factories. But that was back in the day.

Plenty of women fo hard physical labour in traditionally female-dominated roles like nursing and childcare and care. We just tend not to count them as physical labour for some reason that just escapes me...

Oh dear, you've been watching too many red pill videos on YouTube haven't you. Honestly no one is out to get working class white males - there are plenty of sound people fitting that description .They may, however be unhappy with bitter misogynist bigots, who blame their life's problems on other people.

You think women no longer work in factories?

Plenty of women work in call centres which are probably the equivalent these days given the reduced prevalence of factories. Minimum wage labour considered 'unskilled'

It seems it's only the reasonably well paid trades that men guard so massively. I wonder why? Gosh it couldn't be that they are better paid could it?...

Why would you assume that the only people who don't want to do 'hard labour' are middle-class feminists? What about all the men who don't want to do physical jobs? Or women who (for some reason) aren't feminists who don't want to do those jobs? Some people want to do those kinds of jobs and some don't. So what?

FFS OP it is only a couple of generations ago that women were allowed to study medicine let alone be permitted to actually practice as a doctor or - God Forbid - a surgeon!

As for applying for work on a building site as a manual labourer I doubt many would get anything other than derision from the Gaffer, even today.

You are no student of history.

When my friend from school joined the Army she had to leave to get married - 1981.

I joined the Civil Service in 1975 and it was only a few years earlier that women had to leave if they wanted to marry!

It's been hard enough to get and keep work in the "white collar" workplace. Impossible in manual labour - unless there's a war on of course, but those jobs had to be handed back to the men when they were demobbed.

I'm struggling to believe a fellow woman is this clueless.

We have a female plumber but she openly admits she doesn't do the "heavy" work jobs like fitting big radiators or boiler replacements or bathroom fitting etc. She basically just does "light work" like changing taps, repairing leaks, fitting small radiators, GasSafe annual inspections, etc.

Yes, I know "some" women would be physically strong enough, but most aren't. Same with blokes really - you're not going to get a 5 foot nothing skinny wimpish bloke man-handling a 10 foot radiator on their own either!

Some jobs, like firefighting, now have hoists and lifts fitted to the appliances, wheels on heavy equipment, etc., so that being a "big burly bloke" is no longer a basic requirement.

Self employed tradies are different in that it's still basically men doing the "heavy lifting" kinds of work as there's no employer required to provide the equipment for making it safe (and accessible).

There is also an aspect that for some "burly blokes", the physical ability to lift heavy stuff is their ONLY skill, hence why they become labourers, scaffolders, roofers, etc., as they've not got the skill set for office work nor the more technical trades such as heating engineers or electricians.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 21/06/2025 17:06

Last time I looked, I was a woman. Historically, working class females have always done quite hard manual labour. They worked in factories and even down the mines. If you go to China or the former Soviet republics it's quite common to see women doing manual labour.

We’ve just had a decent sized building project done. All men. Planners, architects, scaffolders, roofers, tilers, joiners, plasterers, painters, electricians and the brains of the operation and ‘gaffer’ all men. I have never in my career (professional office based) seen such hard work and team work. Impressively professional. Immaculate timekeeping. Talented, trained professionals. Polite. Hard work in all hours. 8 hours a day every day for six weeks. Rain and heat they worked uncomplaining through it all. Half hour lunch then back to work. Proper hard work. Actual work. Made me feel ashamed at times at my comparatively ‘easy life’ in a female dominated industry. Hats off to the lads. I may get flamed but I would bet my house a team of all women couldn’t do that.

edited to add - was a very cute moment too when the brilliant plasterer who was about 22 face timed his mother so he could show her how smooth he’d got the stairwell. These aren’t ’brainless’ men who are ‘only doing manual work as they’re too thick for anything else’. They’re literally a vital cog in the wheel of our society. And in very high demand. Rightly so.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 21/06/2025 17:47
