To say that most heavy duty physical labour is done by men? When was the last time a female plumber, builder, roofer, painter and decorator, drain unblocker, or boiler or washing machine engineer came to your house?

Have you thought this man might be physically exhausted when he gets home and is not up to cooking or childcare? I did all of that for a while as the man was getting home at 10 at night.

What a load of nonsense. Have you ever thought that the woman might be mentally exhausted when she gets home and not be up to cooking or childcare? Life is tough. Everyone should suck it up and do their share.

I remember manual labourers and the like being called "gammon" by posh people. They really dont like them except when they're required to clean their drains or the gutters.

Gammon to my mind ARE posh men , men like Boris etc. those are gammon, big ham faced obnoxious piggy bums

My sister is a nurse on a mental health ward, would work 12 hour night shifts and come home and have her kids until 4pm when her plumber husband would get home and takeover to let her sleep before her Nightshift.

Do you imagine she could just shrug and be too exhausted? Or is nursing not manual labour enough?

BatchCookBabe · 18/06/2025 13:11

YourAmplePlumPoster · 17/06/2025 21:00

Just 1% of manual labour performed by women and 2% in skilled trades like plumbing, electricians etc.

And..............? WHAT IS YOUR POINT?!

No-one has EVER called a manual labourer 'gammon.' 🙄

CharlieBoff · 18/06/2025 13:34

I can’t afford a tradesman, so I’ve learnt to build a wardrobe, hang a door, retile a wall, tile a floor, change a tyre, plumb in a sink, install an oven and unblock a toilet. If there isn’t a big strong man around to do it, we feeble women will probably just learn and it will still get done and the world won’t fall to shit 🤷‍♀️
It’s also horrendously insulting to suggest that women going out to work full time aren’t also exhausted when we get in.

SparklyGlitterballs · 18/06/2025 13:39

We've had a woman refuse collector on occasion and she was perfectly capable from what I observed. A woman engineer arrived to sort out my mums telecommunications issue yesterday and I often see a woman electrical engineer advertising her services in our local gossip page. These may have been jobs for men traditionally but more women are realising they're able to do them.

All this "what about the poor men" stuff is getting a bit tired.

What is interesting is that, not once, have you mentioned the children. Kids need their dads just as much as their mums, and to reduce those needs just bc you had a busy day (join the club, mate) is pathetic. It's well documented that children of dads who read bedtime stories, take kids to the park, and provide general day-to-day care, have much better outcomes in life. Do you not want your kids to have better outcomes, just for want of doing few things around the house and providing basic practical care for them?

PractisingMyTelekenipsis · 18/06/2025 15:38

I wasn't aware that when I got home from work, usually 15 hours after I left, often having not had a break, that the cooking, cleaning and childcare were optional.

Why did no one tell me that being physically and mentally exhausted meant I could opt out of every thing else? It must be great being a man!

BMW6 · 18/06/2025 17:05

Blimey OP are you a time traveller from pre WW1?

Very VERY little physical graft is required in any occupation these days because of modern technology! Times have moved on in the past 100 years........

Its an interesting question - can anyone think of an occupation that no woman could physically do?

What do you think OP?

YourAmplePlumPoster · 18/06/2025 18:45

Do you remember when Labour defended the rights of the working class person who worked in a factory or other manual labour and the American Democrats who defended the blue collar unions and workers. That's long gone. They are all simply brushed aside as gammon or rednecks. I'll never forget Thornberry posting that insulting post about a white van man and Hillary Clinton describing voters as "deplorable." That's what they really think. Anyone doing a manual trade is deplorable and beneath contempt, thick etc.

No argument here that the working class are shat upon. But that’s an issue with liberalism and capitalism, not with women.

I don’t think you’ve got “gammon” quite right though, isn’t gammon for middle aged middle class red faced white men who like Nigel Farage?

Now from OP: the joys of toxic nostalgia, distorted through a lens of rightwing memory and misogyny. Keep it up, we love a bit of light entertainment on a Wednesday.

Exactly this. And OP does indeed not have a clue what 'gammon' means. Are you British, OP?

YourAmplePlumPoster · 18/06/2025 19:46

Yes I'm British with an Irish Dad and German Jewish mum. Dad was a labourer and also a postman.

When was the last time you had a female roofer, painter and decorator, someone to unblock the drains, the boiler engineer, the plumber, the window cleaner who attended you? Me. NEVER.

Had a female painter/ decorator about 6 months ago. She was very good .

YourAmplePlumPoster · 18/06/2025 19:52

Excellent. In my case never seen a single female.

How does this relate to your first post?

Kindly, you should go outside and touch grass.

CandyLeBonBon · 18/06/2025 20:15

Bloody hell, is this absolute melt STILL BOO-HOOing about how not enough women are getting down sewers? I work in a very male dominated field. It’s not manual labour but it is often very physical. If I lost this job, and couldn’t get another in my chosen field, I’d rather get a job as a refuse collector, or at the Tip, than work in retail, hospitality or care work. Hope that helps.
