To say that most heavy duty physical labour is done by men? When was the last time a female plumber, builder, roofer, painter and decorator, drain unblocker, or boiler or washing machine engineer came to your house?

Over the past 20 years in my property, not a single female in to repair the boiler.

If you have a glass of water and go to bed or maybe an Irn Bru and a walk, then a good breakfast tomorrow and some painkillers, it'll get better.

I'm sorry if your Father's Day was bad.

I'm angry if you're refusing to support your wife or daughter into their chosen fields because you disapprove.

I seem to recall, women working down the mines in the 19th century was banned because they were sexually assaulted down there.

1842 Mines Act. A lot of it was because in many mines, women worked half naked, so mines inspectors were worried about their morals more than the chances of them being sexually assaulted, though no doubt that went on too. They were also worried about children working down mines, because they couldn't read enough to read the bible - and some weren't even aware of God, let alone their catechism.

Women have been allowed to work down mines in the UK since 1984. There just haven't really been any mines for them to do so.

A lot of men choose these “tough jobs” because they are too thick to do anything else. No “tough jobs” involves using your brain.

What appalling snobbery. Men who do manual trades are "thick."

Over the past 20 years, not a single male in any family I know has been the main caregiver for the couple's children.

Outed yourself as a man there by calling women 'females.' Women don't do that.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 15/06/2025 20:14

If you think men shouldn't compete in women's sports its for a reason. Similarly, men tend to choose "tough" kind of physical labour because they are men. If you think women deliberately choose tough physical labour and don't have to, I'd like to see some examples backed up with fact. I seem to recall, women working down the mines in the 19th century was banned because they were sexually assaulted down there.

Seriously though are others right? Do you feel undervalued by your wife and children? Or ex wife and children who are no contact?

Saz12 · 15/06/2025 20:21

A lot of the jobs you're listing don't need that much strength, though? Repairing a boiler, as you say... its arguably less physical than care work.

So hire a woman then. Ask for local recommendations or Google one.

My sister is a plumber. My house has been decorated by two women decorators – once ten years ago and once recently. The electrical team that ran mains electricity into my garden contained a woman. My next door neighbour’s kitchen was installed by a woman.

Who gives a toss if you haven’t made use of any women supplying these trade services.

Are you saying mining jobs are good for women seeing as we are going for Net zero 🤔 😅

In the past 20 years, two of the four people I have had in to make repairs on boilers have been women. In the last six months, one of the three people who came to fix gas mains issues outside of the house (from cadent) was a woman. And she was doing the actual digging and sorting pipes bit rather than the messing with gas meter bit. It's more commonly men but anecdotally, my recent experiences show there are a fair few women doing these jobs now too. Not sure what point you are trying to make anyway. You're not being controversial or interesting in anyway by saying it's mostly men in these jobs.

If you rang a firm I suspect they'd quickly know not to send a woman. You're probably on a list

In fairness my fil is a plumber and gas engineer and boiler changes are hard work. He's retired due to his back at 65 same as most nurses I know so it's comparable

Quite. Plus, there's the pesky law about paying women equal wages for equal work! Can you imagine?! 😫

YankeeDad · 15/06/2025 20:26

I have had female decorators (painters) and one female plumber, but the rest of the building tradespeople I have hired directly or indirectly were all male.

I can see why you might need a man to carry bricks around or heavy timbers or joinery or roof tiles, but a lot of plumbing and electrical jobs seem to require more dexterity and mental acuity more than physical strength.

The single biggest reason there are not more women working in construction may be the attitudes of the other males they would have to work with — not the work itself. The attitudes and behaviours of some customers might, I should imagine, also pose an issue for female tradespeople.

Anyone can do those jobs though? You don’t need a degree or masters do you? Would hardly call it snobbery. You do need a degree to do a professional healthcare job which is women dominated. I’m I saying all men are thick? No. Im saying men who do these jobs are. Come on, keep up.

Why would you think a male is inferior when it comes to repairing or performing a job?

In most male-dominated fields, women have to be much better to be seen as as good as their male peers. It's certainly true in IT - women are generally better qualified, and usually pretty good at their jobs. Men can get away with being lazy, slapdash workers doing the minimum in a way women just can't - we get picked up on things they get away with all the time. I have no reason to think it's very different outside of IT - women in male dominated fields are representing all womanhood, where as men are just a load of individuals. A man doing a bad job is just a bad worker; a woman doing a bad job is proof women shouldn't be doing these jobs.

Barnbrack · 15/06/2025 20:29

YourAmplePlumPoster · 15/06/2025 20:25

The usual passive aggressive response to logical questions.

Can you answer the questions about the comparison with those women who work on sanitation and caring roles?

The differences in salaries between those and trades?

Why male dominated roles are trades while women dominated roles are unskilled?

Why nurses are more highly trained, doing hard labour yet paid less than gas engineers?

In light of this things does that at all I fluence your view?

What about the points regarding women facing mysogyny in male dominated trades and being forced to leave in the training stages? Your own comments about women raped in mines?
.you still think men are just stronger 😂

Not all men

Definitely you though
