To be furious about inevitable menopause

I don't have it yet, 43, feel on top of the flipping world professionally and emotionally (that hollow dragging anxiety of youth is all gone).

But I know that any bloody moment now the brain fog and anxiety and insomnia and prolapse will come for me and ruin it.

I'm so damn angry.

Also, does anyone know if I could just start taking the contraceptive pill now and maybe stay on it for a decade and come out the other side without any of the symptoms?

Because it was quite dismissive of older women (no possibility of getting a shag etc)

I didn't read it like that. She was offered a shag (from fleabag). She didn't want a shag. She sometimes missed being flirted with so much. The upside of that is that people take you seriously (especially at work). I didn't read it as dismissive at all.

Fragmentedbrain · 14/06/2025 21:10

Being alive SUCKS how did this happen?

It was totally depressing by my reading. And people definitely on the whole do not take post menopausal women seriously at work.

The most powerful women in every industry other than (perhaps) entertainment are post menopausal.

Holluschickie · 14/06/2025 21:13

MN is truly batshit these days. I remember this thread from last time.

Trust me, they do. I was taken very seriously so were my contemporaries, to the point where I heard one of them described as scary. There are a lot of take no shit women in my former industry.

I have found the opposite. I am taken way more seriously now than I was as a younger woman and I’ve had a senior role since my 30s.

Same. I'm definitely taken more seriously at work now than I was when I was younger. I'm respected, my opinion is valued and I have much more confidence than I did in my 30s.

The mechanically recovered meat industry must have thought all their Christmasses had come at once when some marketing genius came up with the idea for collagen supplements - there's gold in them there eyelids and arseholes!

I’m delighted to not have periods every month anymore. I have Endometriosis, and trust me, the Menopause has been a cake-walk compared to heavy bleeding, flooding, pain so bad I thought I would pass out.. as well as the horrible effect on my bowel.

HRT … I feel fine

Agree I feel in the prime of my life!

No periods, anaemia, flooding and exhaustion, pregnancy risk
No giving a shit what men think of me
Whooooooop!!

This is hopeful but I also sense that hormones are at the root of a lot of misery in this world. I still remember finding that usborne body book as a child and being aghast and no adult being particularly sympathetic but I say it now over 30 years later what the fuck we are supposed to just accept this shit?????

If you think hormones are unfair, just wait till you learn about mortality.

Yeah, damn those pesky hormones for regulating all our important bodily functions so that we actually work as an organism Hmm

You'd be considerably more dead without them

Daffodilsarefading · 15/06/2025 08:00

It affects everyone differently. Quite like periods. Some women sail through them, others don’t. Some women find motherhood easy others don’t. Nothing you can do really. If it’s bad, it’s very bad. I take HRT got to the stage where I couldn’t leave the house I had become so paranoid. Just luck of the draw I’m afraid.

Boredlass · 15/06/2025 09:11

I can’t wait to stop my period. I’m definitely in peri menopause but it’s been fine

Milly16 · 15/06/2025 09:14

Fragmentedbrain · 14/06/2025 17:22

Oh and this is another thing. Every single emotion, physical sensation or bloody food preference is now met with "oh that will be peri!"

I'm less angry than I've ever been in my life. I'm still entitled to be intellectually angry that my brain and professional standing and peaceful relationships will all be taken away from me for no reason. I didn't have kids cos I don't like them why do I have to do this ovary related nonsense!

This is bonkers. Why do you think that? I am post menopausal and my brain and professional standing are better than ever. I didn't notice any difference. My best work has been done post menopause.

Do you not take post menopausal women seriously? It sounds as though you have some internalised misogyny if so. These are the people with the most experience and expertise.

PurpleChrayn · 15/06/2025 09:29

I’m 43 too and started to feel perimenopausal rage recently. I’m taking Evening Primrose oil which isn’t a long term fix but seems to be helping.

greencartbluecart · 15/06/2025 09:59

It’s not “post menopausal women” that are not taken seriously - partly because that can be anytime between 40 and 60

its old women that people don’t like

wrongthinker · 15/06/2025 11:23

I think you need to calm down OP. You're angry about being a human. Seems pointless and you're missing out on a lot of joy and fun you could be having instead.

ByLemonOrca · 15/06/2025 11:49

I took HRT for two years. Yes I felt more human. Then I had breast cancer left side. Three years later right side. Nobody can say this was caused by the HRT but quite likely according to my GP.

HoppingPavlova · 15/06/2025 12:58

I'm still entitled to be intellectually angry that my brain and professional standing and peaceful relationships will all be taken away from me for no reason

What the fuck are you on about? I’ve been through meno, brain, professional standing and relationships unscathed. You are coming across as mentally ill (as opposed to peri) frankly.

ETA- look at so many high profile professional women, past and present in the world and see if you can use the words ‘brain taken away’ and ‘loss of professional standing’ and then give your head a very big wobble.

notprincehamlet · 15/06/2025 15:03

Menopause doesn't actually cause your brains to fall out your arse, it's all a load of bullshit dreamt up by menovultures to get you to buy their anti brains-falling-out-your-arse snake oil.
Ever seen an orca browsing the menoshit shelves in Boots? Didn't think so. Get on with your life - it'll be over before you know it. Stop wasting your rage on shit that doesn't matter - there's loads of more deserving recipients. Be more orca!
