People are just vile

Numerous stories about the tragic air India crash all over my socials at the moment. The comments sections are fucking grim. Racist jokes, racist comments, conspiracy theories about the sole survivor, not to mention the gutter press posting photos and names presumably before passengers have been formally identified and families informed.

It’s as though people have become so detached from reality they just don’t care. The fact so many people actually died in such a horrible way seems to be lost on them. No sympathy, not even a respectful silence…they all just want to stick their two penneth in. It’s really bothered me today.

I've noticed a huge amount more of vile, ignorant comments on all sorts of things, from seemingly genuine profiles. Its grim.

NewsdeskJC · 13/06/2025 21:30

Not even surprised.
I live on the south coast. Every single post about literally anything is filled with comments about illegal immigrants.
Mind you, same people tried to get the Chinese take away closed down in Covid cos clearly that's how it spread from China.

Doesn't even have to be the south coast. A few weeks ago there were stories about a species of shark in west Wales and it seemed on every one, some hilarious wit popped up to make quips about hoping the shark swam into the Channel to sink some dinghies and eat some immigrants/refugees.

So not only ignorant, cruel and stupid, but unoriginal and unfunny as well. The type of person who responds with a laughing emoji when they're challenged because they're too fucking thick to string a coherent sentence together in response.

SaintNoMountainHighEnough · 13/06/2025 22:40

Social media is a gutter. (Hi fellow users....)

It should not be a barometer for the general feel on this tragedy.

Your algorithms will decide what you see.

That must be why I get dogs, cats, possums and pangolins

greengreyblue · 13/06/2025 22:25

I’ve not read anything vile. I only read the BBC for news. I don’t have social media. Maybe you need to do the same.

Or maybe people could just not be evil arseholes.

Very sadly I'm not surprised. Leading a maintained school with a high proportion of Asian families provides a daily insight into racism from white British communities. Racism isn't just online.

Stereotypical comments, refusing school places in the so called ‘muslim school’, avoiding conversation with Asian families, being racist to individuals in person.

One incident related to me by one of the parents was that she accidently bumped her supermarket trolley into another female. The other female spun round and called her a ‘f*@king P@K%’ only to find that the trolley pushing female was in fact her own GP.

Vile comments and conspiracy theories are part of my local newspaper FB page. I haven't gone looking for them. I am appalled that reporting to the page or to FB, under ‘sharing of misinformation’ or inciting hatred’ has no effect at all. FB always find in favour of the poster in that they haven't breached the guidance.

ChessorBuckaroo · 13/06/2025 22:54

Social media is vile OP, you must know this?

It gives a platform to everyone, including the dregs of society.

Mental health has deteriorated so much because of the toxicity online.

I do know it but I suppose it is surprising just how many people seem to share these views and have zero shame about posting them publicly under their full names.

Oh goodness, @OffToLockUp , what did the parent/GP say to the racist? Did she say anything? Did the racist seem horrified it was her doctor?

OnlyTheBravest · 13/06/2025 23:31

I am no longer on social media. It has become a complete cesspool with zero accountability.

I believe in freedom of speech but the level of hatred on certain comment sections is borderline hate speech.

TomatoSandwiches · 13/06/2025 23:54

I remember when people used to keep their mouths shut because they didn't want to embarrass themselves as they new they weren't bright because people had the common sense to roll their eyes when they opened their mouths or told them to shut up!

SM has given all sorts of people the impression that their thoughts are facts, the next thicko ticks the like button and the external validation grows and the next comment gets even more attention and so the cycle continues.

Most people are disgusting.

JHound · 14/06/2025 00:32

Jonny234 · 13/06/2025 18:06

If you follow the right accounts racism is almost non existent. Maybe an odd stupid random comment in the replies by attention seekers but that's about it.

I maintain the worst are the woke left, 100%. It's currently in the process of eating itself.

😂

Ok.

Don't know if it's true but I overheard someone saying the survivor opened the emergency door causing the crash. Of course that should not have been possible ..

That’s helpful. Thanks for that.

SnowFrogJelly · 14/06/2025 01:01

Suggest you don’t look at social media and read a book instead

Anxious2024 · 14/06/2025 02:05

I have been shocked by the same thing OP.

NCNC2 · 14/06/2025 02:18

The new thing seems to be “send them back” on any photo of someone who isn’t porcelain white and has a name that isn’t smith or jones
like he was born in Manchester, where the fuck do you want him sending back to?!

they should probably do their family tree and realise if we had “sent them back” they wouldn’t exist then they might STFU

I agree with this so much.

Because of social media, there are so many people labouring under the delusion that free speech means their thoughts are important and worth sharing, even if they are pig ignorant and unpleasant and have no more capacity to think critically than a slug.

Racist made the usual noises about ‘but I didn't mean you, you are ok?’

GP reported racist to the police under hate crime.

Racist deregistered from surgery (by the surgery) as relationships have broken down.

Glad they got chucked out of the surgery.

SusanSHelit · 14/06/2025 14:31

Absolutely appalling behaviour. I work with some really amazing, caring and highly professional colleagues from India and they are all quite unsurprisingly devastated. Some of them have recently flown with air India and know people who have lost loved ones in the tragedy.

To make vile racist jokes or twist it into conspiracy theories is, as you said op, vile.

Guarantee the shoe would be on the other foot if it was a plane full of white brits.

Yep.
Or anything referring to a black/ brown / non-white person as Brit / Scottish / French / Swedish etc is full of comments saying “no they’re not - SEND THEM BACK”.

Anybody objecting to that is apparently “Wokey Left”.

It’s as though people have become so detached from reality they just don’t care.

That's where screenshots and "receipt 🧾 keeping" comes in.

What does that mean - receipt keeping?

asrl78 · 14/06/2025 18:27

Racist jokes/comments? That was going around after the Grenfeld disaster as well. Sadly we have to accept there are a lot of scum in society who take advantage of the fact that they can say what they want without fear of having their skull smashed in. An unfortunate side effect of living in a civilised society.

Mostly Facebook where the overwhelming number of comments on news articles have been fucking gross. I just can’t understand how are there are so many people who would respond publicly to a tragedy like this with sick jokes and racist comments.

Reform voters.
