People are just vile

Numerous stories about the tragic air India crash all over my socials at the moment. The comments sections are fucking grim. Racist jokes, racist comments, conspiracy theories about the sole survivor, not to mention the gutter press posting photos and names presumably before passengers have been formally identified and families informed.

It’s as though people have become so detached from reality they just don’t care. The fact so many people actually died in such a horrible way seems to be lost on them. No sympathy, not even a respectful silence…they all just want to stick their two penneth in. It’s really bothered me today.

@WestwardHo1 The extreme right have always portrayed immigrants as less than human. Its something the National Front,BNP,C18 the security wing of the BNP had on their leaflets and literature.
I looked at the Reform website and they had the slogan "we want our country back"on a union flag backdrop.
I've said before on another thread that it carries racist connotations and is not dissimilar to the BNP rhetoric in the 90s.

Facebook is really good for medical problems. I have three health conditions I get no help or support for from the health service. I have managed to find out so much from these groups.

I’m the same with my eye condition. When people had surgeries planned they ask, what’s the pain like, what do you do whilst recovering etc. I have given them my experiences, tips on recovering, what do to do etc.

Musclewoman · 13/06/2025 21:02

I've read loads about it on Facebook and haven't seen anything you're describing.....Are you looking for comments like this because you enjoy being outraged....?.
And then to make a thread here about how outraged you are, what a way to start the weekend 😭

Jeez, talk about shooting the messenger!

The OP isn’t the bad guy here. Be grateful you haven’t seen any of it, it’s sickening. I look at comments on news stories by default - looking for the “TLDR” - but I’m going to try to change that and avoid, would rather not see the hate.

I’m not sure how you haven’t seen the comments, they are on almost every news post on social media (especially Facebook) including sky news posts. I don’t think OP is looking for something to moan about seeing as many have agreed with her.

I often wonder what goes on in the minds of people who laugh at these jokes. Take rape jokes, for example. Is it that, deep down, they are repressing an urge to rape and abuse and the joke releases the tension?

What really sickens me is the way people like Jimmy Carr are willing to pander to such people. He made a joke about Jimmy Saville having “f*cked more minors than Thatcher.” Notice how Carr is cunning enough to get in a dig at Thatcher. You see, I’m attacking Thatcher, so I’m cool and beyond criticism. One of my pet hates is left-wing comedians who are vicious and hate-filled and cruel but get away with it because they’re on the ‘right side’. Frankie Boyle is a good example. Or look at Jo Brand, calling for battery acid to be thrown in a conservative politician’s face.

This is why I so admire P. G. Wodehouse. He manages to be hilarious without being cruel.

Edited

Are you sure that’s what Jo Brand said? Surely that would actually be illegal, calling for violence against an identifiable person?

Yes I actively spend my days trying to seek out the lowest form of humanity…

One thing that stood out to me - slightly unrelated to the nastiness, but a comment I didn't understand at all, was someone posting "god must have been looking down on him" about the survivor.
How can someone justify that a god would save a one man yet allow those children and (apparently) 2 newborn babies to die?

dayslikethese1 · 13/06/2025 21:25

There's more and more of this unfortunately. It seems to be actively pushed by some SM companies, probably due to engagement. Sometimes the accounts look like bots although plenty are real ppl too of course. And it's all over, nothing to do with what you follow ime.

what an ignorant thing to say.

NewsdeskJC · 13/06/2025 21:30

Not even surprised.
I live on the south coast. Every single post about literally anything is filled with comments about illegal immigrants.
Mind you, same people tried to get the Chinese take away closed down in Covid cos clearly that's how it spread from China.

The point to note is the tolerant left is anything but. Woke lefty channels and platforms like the BBC, Sky, Ch4 news, Facebook spew out propoganda rather than news and attracts the worst. This is why they are all slowly dying.

X is circa 50/50 left and right and people can have a genuine discussion and if necessary agree to disagree.

WTF has the OP or racist responses to this tragedy on social media got to do with leftist politics?

ClairDeLaLune · 13/06/2025 21:39

LivelyMintViper · 13/06/2025 17:37

Don't know if it's true but I overheard someone saying the survivor opened the emergency door causing the crash. Of course that should not have been possible ..

And there lies the problem. Stupid people repeating rumours and stupid people believing them and passing them on.

ThePigandPear · 13/06/2025 22:04

Since the gutter press earn ad accrued kajillions via every click, it would not surprise me in the slightest if a large majority of user comments were AI generated.
This is the attention economy after all, and even negative attention earns billions.

Appalled and intrigued readers from Mumsnet, Reddit, and many other sites will head over to the articles to wring their hands over the state of things and the DM grow steadily richer...

I'm something of a woke centrie/leftie and even I don't believe that the average Brexiteer would wish anything so vile upon others. There certainly are scum amongst us, but still...

I am often surprised at how many MNers patronise the gutter press. It's all a bit grotty.

It’s also the sheer arrogance of people “well he couldn’t have been on the flight he just walked away he’d have broken legs if he jumped, he probably was a bystander wanting a free pass to Britain”. Not even in possession of the facts but so convinced their pathetic conspiracies are right.

Surely there’s not anyone who thinks he jumped out of the moving plane?

I agree there’s been some disgusting stuff online. There always is. Depressing to read what goes through some people’s minds. Though lots of bots and other agitators. There are many kind, anti-racist people online too.

Horrific tragedy. Heart breaks for the families.

I haven’t read any social media stuff but thought it very strange that the BBC chose to do a 1 hour special on a plane crash, on the actual day of the crash, when they clearly knew exactly nothing, and only had a 4 second clip which was freely available all over the internet. The fact they stretch it out to the 1 hour mark without adding anything to those 4 seconds beggars belief.

feelingbleh · 13/06/2025 22:17

Yanbu iv seen some absolutely disgusting things. I don't understand it.

Who knows what happened. It’s still such early days. But it’s pretty shitty of Geoff off Facebook to start throwing conspiracies around and suggesting there are ulterior motives.

Why? There are news stories everywhere understandably. My feed or algorithms don’t dictate what people comment.

If I had infinite time and resources I would try to alert the employers of these people and see how funny they think it is then.

I'm not on socials, are these vile comments under their real identities or just anonymous cowards?

saraclara · 13/06/2025 22:22

All the news media that comes up on my feed is followed by this awful, awful crap. The conspiracy theories about the survivor completely ignore that he was registered on that flight, and there are some ridiculously fantastical 'explanations' for him being alive. No-one of them positive about him.

And yes, of course 90% 'he's not British' comments.

greengreyblue · 13/06/2025 22:25

I’ve not read anything vile. I only read the BBC for news. I don’t have social media. Maybe you need to do the same.

What on earth has this got to do with the thread? Are you really claiming horrible racist comments about people who have died tragically are simply "genuine discussion"?

Why is that bigots can't spell? You'd think they would have more respect for the English language.

EdithBond · 13/06/2025 22:35

RedToothBrush · 13/06/2025 20:47

Never mind the social media. I think the tone of interviews has been appalling.

I was watching an interview with a brother off the survivor and they were asking how he was feeling. They kept on going on about the brother who has survived and were completely dismissive and insensitive to the fact that his other brother had just died!

It was appalling. The interview just kept pushing even though he was distressed.

And that was the BBC!

I think its set a tone for the rest of the reporting and the comments that have been made. There's no way they'd have asked similar if it had been a plane full of White Brits at a British airport.

Yes, I saw that and thought it was utterly crass journalism. It was on Associated Press.

Nayan (the brother) was clearly in total shock and speaking on his doorstep. Doorstepping is the pits. Just bloody leave people alone.

Hillsborough Law needs to give people entitlement to support to keep reporters at bay.
