People who hang out washing in heavy rain

Why do people insist on putting out washing when having heavy rain?

If out all day, don’t do it. If in, take it in as soon as it rains!

Washing stinks when out in the rain. Or when is stuck in the washing machine - as parents’ washing machine on Friday. It didn’t drain - the pump has gone. I took the load home with me and washed it as stank. Not strong, but enough to feel conscious about it.

i dont imagine anyone would do this?
i am not sure it stinks though in the rain

i know my lazy dh thinks it is good to leave it if it rains but i disagree.

BallerinaRadio · 08/06/2025 06:30

Are Sunday mornings always this exhilarating on here?

Meadowfinch · 08/06/2025 06:32

Maybe they hang washing out and then go to work. I can't imagine anyone does it on purpose.

MoistVonL · 08/06/2025 06:32

Because they hadn’t checked the forecast. Because they hoped to be back before the rain. Because it doesn’t much matter, it will dry again anyway.

No, it doesn’t stink if it gets rained on. Not in the slightest. It’s nothing like the musty smell of soggy washing left in a machine to fester.

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 08/06/2025 06:33

Are you on glue? Nobody hangs washing out in heavy rain it makes absolutely zero sense to do so.

Usually.

Meadowfinch · 08/06/2025 06:34

And on that note, I shall go and put another load on, since the sun is shining. 😁

ButterCrackers · 08/06/2025 06:35

If you’re going out and/or can’t hang it up to dry inside. The weather is changeable and they are hoping it will drip dry at least.

I can’t imagine people do it knowing it’s going to rain. They probably think it’ll be nice and get unexpected rain, or stay out longer than expected, or forget about it.

ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself · 08/06/2025 06:37

‘Why do people insist on putting out washing when having heavy rain?’ Because they have no more space indoors? Because the forecast is for the rain to stop?

‘If out all day, don’t do it. If in, take it in as soon as it rains!’ Why? Are you always this tetchy and bossy?

‘Washing stinks when out in the rain.’ No it doesn’t. Not in my garden. Where do you live that has smelly rain then?

’Or when is stuck in the washing machine - as parents’ washing machine on Friday. It didn’t drain - the pump has gone. I took the load home with me and washed it as stank. Not strong, but enough to feel conscious about it.’ Thats got nothing to do with rain. Of course it will stink if you leave it in the machine.

Goodness me. Chill.

What a bloody strange thread? No one is hanging washing out in the rain and obviously those who have washing out in the rain aren't at home or able to get it in if it starts to rain. Hmm

YABU and maybe you should go back to bed and get more sleep?

cyvguhb · 08/06/2025 06:40

Tell us more about the rain that makes washing smell, that's a new one for me

Vonryanspushbike · 08/06/2025 06:40

You don't have an option in Manchester it's always effing raining 🙄

stayathomer · 08/06/2025 06:43

never seen people do it in the heavy rain but definitely do it regularly when drizzling if I know there’s potential later

Blobbitymacblob · 08/06/2025 06:44

Rain wet clothes don’t smell anything like fusty washing machine clothes,

However, if clothes have sat too long in the washing machine, and they’re past the point of being sorted out with a cup of vinegar, it’s better to dry them completely and start the wash over again. But obviously the dryer will stink if you put them in, so the best alternative is to hang them out, until they’re dry, even if that means weathering a rainstorm first,

BusyExpert · 08/06/2025 06:44

I take my washing in if it's dry and it starts to rain but I often leave it out if it's wet anyway. Laundry dried in the open air smells wonderful when you iron it, IMO it is even better if it has been rained on. But then I live in a rural area that does not have heavy pollution.

however I am curious, why does it matter to you what there people do with their laundry?

Daysgo · 08/06/2025 06:50

Rain doesnt make washing stink.

Klonc · 08/06/2025 06:50

I don’t hang washing out as being a hay fever sufferer, pollen clings onto laundry

FeelinTwentySixPointTwo · 08/06/2025 06:55

This was me yesterday. I went out, ended up staying out much longer than I thought, and it started to rain.
No bloody way was I going home early just to bring my washing in.

Surely that's what most people are doing; putting washing out and then being at the whim of unpredictable weather? The forecast had it entirely wrong here yesterday, which isn't at all out of the ordinary.
Imagining a really sad world where people stay in while their washing is out, just in case the rain comes...!

stayathomer · 08/06/2025 06:56

The people with hayfever, have you tried putting it in the drier for twenty minutes after it comes in? We started and it seems to get rid of it for me and my sons (the doctor recommended it)

PruthePrune · 08/06/2025 07:00

My NDN leaves her washing out literally for days come rain or shine. Was raining heavily yeterday and the washing is still out.

CasperGutman · 08/06/2025 07:00

Why did you assert so confidently that rain makes laundry "stink", if you have no experience of hanging washing out anyway? Weird!

TheAutumnCrow · 08/06/2025 07:02

I wash my heavy, long hall rug by hanging it over the line in the rain and then leaving it to dry.

Comes up a treat.

LavenderBlue19 · 08/06/2025 07:03

I always think washing smells even better when it's been rained on and then dried outside.

If my washing is out in the rain it's either because I didn't expect it to rain, or the forecast is for it to be sunny/breezy later and I think it'll dry.
