People who hang out washing in heavy rain

Why do people insist on putting out washing when having heavy rain?

If out all day, don’t do it. If in, take it in as soon as it rains!

Washing stinks when out in the rain. Or when is stuck in the washing machine - as parents’ washing machine on Friday. It didn’t drain - the pump has gone. I took the load home with me and washed it as stank. Not strong, but enough to feel conscious about it.

At least it's only washing. My DP went out yesterday in completely unsuitable clothing "because it wasn't raining when he set off". He came back soaked to the skin.

Washing only smells when it's hung around damp for too long. Sounds as though your parents' washing machine needs a clean.

Because they hadn’t checked the forecast. Because they hoped to be back before the rain. Because it doesn’t much matter, it will dry again anyway.

No, it doesn’t stink if it gets rained on. Not in the slightest. It’s nothing like the musty smell of soggy washing left in a machine to fester.

This. I often don’t pay much attention to the forecast and just stick my washing out. 🤷‍♀️ If it rains it’ll hopefully dry again , if not I’ll sort it out! I can’t say I give much thought to it to be honest.

Doggymummar · 08/06/2025 09:42

I hung mine out yesterday. We are in a hard water area and the rain makes it lovely and soft.

ThisUsernameIsNowTaken · 08/06/2025 09:49

You seem strangely invested in other people's lives, OP.

TheSilentSister · 08/06/2025 09:53

Washing that's been rained on smells lovely and fresh when dried.

Sera1989 · 08/06/2025 09:58

My NDN does this, it’s out for days sometimes. They always remember to bring it in when they have a bonfire though, but no warning for other neighbours’ washing.

I once found a big spider on the gusset of my pants and was put off outdoor drying for life so only do it occasionally

EwwSprouts · 08/06/2025 09:59

Where do you live that you have stinky rain?
I wouldn't hang washing out in the rain but it might get caught in a shower while I'm at work. Tumble dryers cost a fortune to run.

minnienono · 08/06/2025 10:01

I’ve hung mine out in drizzle many a morning because it’s forecast to clear up, being on the coast morning sea mist with drizzle is common, by 10am sunshine, I’m at work by then

Are Sunday mornings always this exhilarating on here?

Yeah. Someone bought an M&S makeup bag the other day - nearly broke Mumsnet :D (recommend that thread - good fun & v tongue in cheek!)

SockFluffInTheBath · 08/06/2025 10:09

I put some linen pillowcases on the line yesterday because my tumble drier and hanging rail were full. It promptly pissed it down and I left them until the washing machine was empty so I could spin them, then they went in the drier, and came out smelling just the same as they would without a rain rinse. If you’re my neighbour then get a bloody life.

stayathomer · 08/06/2025 06:56

The people with hayfever, have you tried putting it in the drier for twenty minutes after it comes in? We started and it seems to get rid of it for me and my sons (the doctor recommended it)

I'm very interested in this, do you know if the dryer remove ls the pollen from the clothes, or is it deactivating it's pollen-ness?

Do you have to wipe the dryer out afterwards to avoid cross contamination of clothes straight out of the washing machine?

Noshadelamp · 08/06/2025 10:14

Op how is it affecting you really?

Seems a strange overreaction to people doing something differently to you.

If you're genuinely curious, I put washing out in the rain when I'm about to leave the house and presume the rain will stop at some point.

I also sometimes just put it on the line when there's nowhere else to put it in the house.

It doesn't smell as many pp here have told you so I hope you've updated your information now.

Washing stinks when out in the rain.’ No it doesn’t. Not in my garden. Where do you live that has smelly rain then?

If your washing is left in the rain all day, yes, it stinks. You might be nose-blind to it.

Clothes that have been rained on and then dried out don't smell?
If I do a whites wash I ll purposely put them on the line when it's raining if I can, then dry in the sun, the combinations seems to help lift the remnant of stain and bring the the white out brighter.
My towels dry less crispy if they ve been rained on a bit before drying in the sun and my trousers that tend to wrinkle in the wash don't need ironing if they ve been on the rain

Delphiniumandlupins · 08/06/2025 10:24

Maybe they're asthma sufferers and hope the rain will wash the pollen off 😏

OhCalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 08/06/2025 10:30

I did yesterday. Obviously it wasn't raining when I put it out and I got held up when I was out. Unfortunately I sometimes have a life in the real world and don't really plan my entire day around how someone on Mumsnet might have a little too much time on their own hands and make a whole thread about it because it causes them so much turmoil. If only I had such pressing concerns..

Lostworldss · 08/06/2025 10:30

Sometimes I forget to get mine in and then it gets rained on and then I have to wait for it to be dry again. That whole faff might take 3 days. Glad to know that my neighbours may actually be judging me instead of getting on with their lives!

You didn't actually peg it out while it was raining then - which is what OP is wondering about.

Lins77 · 08/06/2025 10:39

My washing is out in all weathers, but I always feel vaguely embarrassed about it.

This thread has made me feel miles better!

Echlefecker · 08/06/2025 10:41

My work colleagues rewash washing if it has been hung out and accidentally caught in a shower. I'm not that precious. I would t deliberately want to get it rained on but shit happens

I agree. In fact, there is a lovely fresh smell to clothes that have been rained on then dry in the sun after.

(By the way op I haven't left clothes out in the rain in forever. I just use the dryer these days, but feel that is worse than leaving them out in the rain due to the energy consumption)

whengodwasarabbit1 · 08/06/2025 11:37

I love the smell of rain on my washing, I dont do it purposefully, but if it happens it's fine and easier to let it dry out there than drip all over my house 🙃

Shinyandnew1 · 08/06/2025 11:41

Washing stinks when out in the rain. +

Really?!

Inertia · 08/06/2025 11:51

Relieved that I don’t live in one of those smelly rain areas!

If the washing has already been soaked through in the rain and then a spell of dry weather is on the way, it makes far more sense to leave it on the line to drip dry than to wrangle tons of sodden laundry inside the house .

MoistVonL · 08/06/2025 12:27

@Inertia , I suspect the “smelly rain” areas are the ones where the spiders have enormous ponging willies that they rub on the washing at night.

A lesser known versions of Incey Wincey Spider has him drying his knob on the sheets on the line before climbing up the spout again

I distinctly remember this.

When I was little, my mum put some nappies out to bleach in the sun. She had an area that was hidden from the neighbours so used to put underwear etc there. Obviously she put the stained nappies there.

It rained and the neighbours took in her washing. They handed it back "with a look" and had put the nappies on top showing the stains. My mum was mortified! 😂

Im glad my neighbours don't take my washing in! I don't need my washing judging.

My neighbour takes my washing in if it rains.

Ill bring hers in occasionally if its beyond bone dry, because if its not I know she'd rather leave it out for another 4 days!!

very occasionally it annoys me if I'd have left it out (if it showers) when I'm sure it'll get dry in the afternoon. But hey ho. On the whole I'm grateful, even if I don't actually mind it getting another rain rinse.
